Yes—Surface Book 3 is the more capable 15-inch convertible, with newer graphics and processor options, up to 32 GB of memory and 2 TB of storage, and Wi-Fi 6. But it is not a sweeping redesign: it keeps Surface Book 2’s detachable-screen concept, 15-inch 3:2 display, footprint, and 4.20-pound weight. It makes the most sense if you need the newer hardware for demanding creative work or want this unusual combination of a pen-capable tablet and discrete graphics; Book 2 may remain sufficient if its performance already meets your needs.

What makes the Surface Book 3 different?

The Surface Book 3 15-inch is a convertible whose screen detaches from its keyboard base. Used on its own, the display becomes a Windows tablet; it can also be reversed for screen-forward viewing or folded down into a studio-like surface for pen input. The base contains the discrete graphics and additional battery capacity, so separating the screen changes which parts of the machine you are using.

That design is the central reason to consider a Surface Book. It combines inking and tablet use with a GPU-equipped laptop base—an uncommon mix, as Windows Central reviewer Daniel Rubino noted in his April 22, 2021 review. If you want a conventional laptop, the detachable mechanism is less compelling; if you specifically want a large tablet that can reconnect to a graphics-equipped base, it remains distinctive.

Surface Book 3 vs. Surface Book 2: what changed?

The 15-inch Book 3 updates the internal hardware and wireless connectivity, but leaves the headline display specifications, overall footprint, and weight essentially unchanged. Microsoft’s specifications for both generations are available on its pages for Surface Book 2 and Surface Book 3.

How much faster is Surface Book 3?

Book 3’s 10th-generation processor and GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q are newer than Book 2’s 8th-generation CPU and GTX 1060. That makes Book 3 the stronger hardware choice, especially for work that benefits from its newer discrete GPU. The commercial Quadro RTX 3000 configuration is a separate option intended for professional certified workflows, not the standard consumer graphics configuration.

At launch on May 6, 2020, Microsoft described Book 3 as offering “up to 50% more performance than Surface Book 2.” That is a manufacturer claim, not a promise that every application or workload will run 50% faster. The practical gain depends on the software, configuration, and whether a task is limited by the processor, graphics, memory, or another factor. Microsoft’s launch statement appears in its Surface announcement.

Does the display improve?

No major display specification changes between these 15-inch generations are established here. Book 3 retains a 3240 × 2160 PixelSense touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio. Microsoft lists 260 pixels per inch, 1600:1 contrast, and 10-point multitouch for Book 3. The tall 3:2 format gives documents and many creative applications more vertical room than a widescreen panel, and the touch display supports tablet and pen use.

The unchanged resolution also means Book 3 is not a display upgrade for someone seeking a sharper or differently shaped panel. Rubino’s review additionally criticizes the lack of HDR or Dolby Vision and the absence of an anti-glare display.

Ports and connectivity

Book 3 has two USB-A ports, one USB-C port with USB Power Delivery, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, two Surface Connect ports, and a full-size SDXC card reader. Its USB-C port is USB 3.1 Gen 2, not Thunderbolt 3; do not assume Thunderbolt accessories or workflows will work through it. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 are upgrades over Book 2’s Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.1.

Are the battery-life claims comparable?

No. Microsoft’s “up to 17.5 hours” estimate for the 15-inch Book 3 came from an April 2020 test on preproduction hardware and software. The mixed-use protocol included web browsing, Office productivity, idle time, Wi-Fi, and 150-nit screen brightness; Microsoft warns that actual battery life varies significantly with settings and use. Book 2’s “up to 17 hours” figure came from an October 2017 video-playback test. The different protocols mean the headline numbers do not establish that Book 3 lasts half an hour longer in a controlled, like-for-like comparison. Microsoft documents the claims on its specification pages for Book 3 and Book 2.

NEW Microsoft Surface Book 3 - 15" Touch-Screen - 10th Gen Intel Core i7 - 32GB Memory - 1TB SSD (Latest Model) - Platinum
  • Most powerful Surface laptop yet, with quad-core powered, 10th Gen Intel Core processors. Now 30% faster than Surface Book 2 15”.
  • Fastest graphics on Surface, powered by NVIDIA GTX GeForce GPU.
  • Power when you need it. Up to 17.5 hours battery life[1] — plus improved standby that extends battery life when you’re away.
  • Robust laptop, powerful tablet, and portable studio in one.
  • The connections you need, including USB-A, USB-C, and full-size SD card slot.

What are the drawbacks?

  • Little external change: Book 3 retains Book 2’s basic design, display resolution, footprint, and weight.
  • No Thunderbolt 3: USB-C is useful, but it is not a Thunderbolt port.
  • Display omissions: the review notes no HDR or Dolby Vision and no anti-glare panel.
  • No internal upgrade path noted by the reviewer: Rubino reports no repair entry points or way to upgrade internal components. Choose RAM and storage carefully when buying, because you should not count on adding more later.

Should you choose Surface Book 3 or keep Surface Book 2?

Choose Book 3 if you need its newer hardware

Book 3 is the more capable choice if your work benefits from the GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q, you need up to 32 GB of RAM or a 2 TB SSD configuration, or you want the newer wireless standards. It is also the generation to consider if you specifically need the commercial Quadro RTX 3000 configuration for a certified professional workflow.

Book 2 may be enough if the design matters more than the upgrade

If your current Book 2 already handles your workload and you mainly value the detachable tablet, pen use, and 3:2 display, Book 3’s unchanged exterior offers less reason to switch. The newer internals are meaningful, but they do not transform the form factor or screen.

For a used or refurbished purchase, prioritize configuration and condition

Because the reviewer identifies no internal upgrade route, compare the installed memory and SSD capacity against what you expect to need. Inspect the particular unit’s condition rather than assuming its hardware can be expanded later. Current prices, stock, seller condition, and configuration availability are not established here, so compare listings at the time you shop.
