Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop 13-inch and Surface Pro 12-inch on May 6, 2025. Both were announced with a Snapdragon X Plus 8-core processor and a 45 TOPS NPU; US launch prices started at $899 for the Laptop and $799 for the Pro, with availability beginning May 20, 2025, in select markets. These are the products and prices from the 2025 announcement—not necessarily the specifications or prices shown on Microsoft’s current Surface pages.
What Microsoft announced on May 6, 2025
The reveal covered two compact Copilot+ PCs: a conventional 13-inch notebook and a 12-inch Surface Pro tablet that can be used with a detachable keyboard. Microsoft listed the same core processor and NPU specification for both: Snapdragon X Plus with 8 cores and a 45 TOPS NPU. Those are Microsoft’s announced specifications, not independent measurements of everyday speed or AI performance. Microsoft’s May 6 announcement has the launch details.
Surface Laptop 13-inch vs. Surface Pro 12-inch
| 2025 model | Form factor | Display size | US launch starting price | Keyboard and pen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Laptop 13-inch | Conventional notebook | 13 inches | $899 | Notebook form; no detachable keyboard or pen purchase is specified in the announcement. |
| Surface Pro 12-inch | Tablet-style 2-in-1 with an adjustable kickstand and detachable keyboard | 12 inches | $799 | Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard and Surface Slim Pen sold separately. |
The Laptop is the more direct fit if you want a notebook with its keyboard built in. The Pro lets you use the tablet on its own or add the detachable keyboard; its kickstand supports different viewing positions, while the pen is the relevant optional accessory for writing, annotating, or drawing. Microsoft’s Surface Pro page currently provides accessory context, but it also displays refreshed devices. Check the exact model and accessory compatibility before relying on a current listing for this 2025 generation.

How to interpret performance claims
Microsoft also claimed the 2025 Laptop was 50% faster than Surface Laptop 5 in a Cinebench 24 multi-thread test. Its comparison used the Snapdragon X Plus 8-core Laptop against a Surface Laptop 5 with Intel Core i5. This is a vendor-reported result under that test, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee of the same difference in other workloads. Qualcomm executive Kedar Kondap described the devices as delivering the performance, speed, and battery life customers expect, but that statement is a company characterization rather than independent validation.
