Microsoft released five Windows 11 Insider preview builds on October 2, 2026, across Beta, Experimental, 26H1, and Future Platforms tracks. The biggest practical change is Cloud rebuild: one 26H1 build adds a reinstall option in Windows Recovery Environment, while another adds drive sanitization and remote administration. The releases also add Unicode 17.0 text shaping, Magnifier zoom controls, and several File Explorer changes. These are previews, not general Windows updates; each build targets a different Insider track.

Microsoft’s October 2 release notes describe each build separately: Beta 26220.9587, Experimental 26340.9596, Experimental (26H1) 28120.3151, Beta (26H1) 28020.3142, and Experimental (Future Platforms) 29680.1000.
Cloud rebuild: what each 26H1 build adds
Cloud rebuild is the most substantial recovery change in this batch, but its capabilities differ by build. The Beta preview focuses on reinstalling Windows from WinRE; the Experimental preview adds drive sanitization and remote administration.
Beta 28020.3142: reinstall Windows from WinRE
This build previews Cloud rebuild launched from Windows Recovery Environment, including when Windows will not boot. It downloads a Windows image and drivers from Windows Update, so the recovery flow does not require USB installation media or a healthy installed copy of Windows. In WinRE, the user needs an Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection, must review the target build, edition, and language, and must confirm a data-loss warning before proceeding. Experimental 28120.3151: sanitization and remote administration
The Experimental (26H1) build adds Cloud rebuild options to remove files, or remove files and sanitize drives before reinstalling Windows. Microsoft says sanitization uses the storage hardware’s erase capability. It is irreversible, so it is not the routine choice for recovering a PC you intend to keep using. Administrators can also configure and start Cloud rebuild remotely through Recovery CSP. Details are in Microsoft’s Experimental (26H1) 28120.3151 notes.
Earlier entry points in 25H2 and 26H2
Builds 26220.9587 and 26340.9596 list a new Cloud rebuild entry point under Settings > System > Recovery. Their notes do not describe the WinRE flow or drive-sanitization additions listed for the 26H1 builds.

Magnifier adds precise zoom controls in both 26H1 builds
Builds 28120.3151 and 28020.3142 let users enter an exact zoom percentage in the Magnifier toolbar or choose preset increments of 5%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 150%, 200%, and 400%. The controls are listed in both 26H1 release notes: Experimental and Beta.
File Explorer changes depend on the build
- Build 26340.9596: Enter
~in the address bar to navigate to your profile folder; a path such as~AppDataopens a subfolder. - Builds 28120.3151 and 28020.3142: Folder-view customizations remain consistent, address-bar path handling is broadened, suggestion dropdowns are more reliable, and rename behavior is fixed for repeated selection and case-only name changes.
- Build 29680.1000: For downloaded HTML files, File Explorer offers a “Preview anyway” action after acknowledging the warning. It also previews non-HTML files such as PDFs automatically, and fixes an artifact in the preview pane.
These are distinct changes across three tracks, not one combined File Explorer update. Microsoft lists the details in the respective 26340.9596, 28120.3151, 28020.3142, and 29680.1000 notes.

Other changes and fixes
Unicode and Settings
Beta 26220.9587 and Experimental 26340.9596 add Windows text-shaping support for Unicode 17.0. Microsoft says the standard added 4,803 characters, including four newly encoded scripts: Beria Erfe, Sidetic, Tai Yo, and Tolong Siki. Both builds also include Settings home performance improvements intended to reduce loading time in some scenarios. The figure and changes are reported in Microsoft’s 26220.9587 and 26340.9596 release notes.
Future Platforms build 29680.1000
The Future Platforms build lets users pin favorite apps in the Windows Share window and shows packaged-app version numbers at the top level in Settings. Its other fixes cover Family Safety age-restriction messages, taskbar polish when the taskbar is in alternate positions, some USB Audio Class 1.0 devices, Remote Desktop window sizing, and extreme lag that develops over time. Microsoft also notes ongoing performance and VMware-related issues. The 29680.1000 release notes describe this track as early platform work not tied to a particular Windows release.

What to know before installing an Insider build
- Features are not guaranteed to ship. Microsoft says features and experiences in these builds may change, be removed, or never be released outside Windows Insiders; rollouts may also reach only a subset of Insiders.
- Experimental (26H1) may be unstable. Microsoft warns that these builds can be unstable and may have limited documentation.
- Build 26340.9596 has a known installation issue. Microsoft lists error 0x80073712, which may be related to Windows Sandbox; disabling Sandbox is offered as a workaround.
- Future Platforms is early development. Its features are not associated with a specific Windows release, and its notes include ongoing performance and VMware-related issues.
Check the release notes for the exact build and track before installing, rather than assuming that a feature listed for one build will be available in another.
