Microsoft’s UK MSN homepage relaunched with a new design on 1 June 2010, with the planned go-live time set for 8:30 p.m. The update was described as simpler and brought Facebook, Twitter and MSN Video Player content into the homepage. It was a historical redesign—not a current MSN launch.
When did Microsoft relaunch MSN in the UK?
Neowin reported that Microsoft planned to put the redesigned MSN UK homepage live at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 1 June 2010. The report described this as the next step after redesigns in the United States and Brazil. It also noted that the UK homepage adopted the butterfly logo used by the US counterpart. Read Neowin’s launch report.
What changed in the 2010 MSN UK homepage?
The redesign was presented as a simpler homepage that brought several services together:
- Social connections: The homepage integrated content from Facebook and Twitter.
- Video: It incorporated Microsoft’s MSN Video Player service.
- Branding: It adopted the butterfly logo already used by the US MSN homepage.
The launch report did not provide a detailed feature-by-feature comparison with the previous UK homepage, so the documented changes are limited to the simpler design, these integrations and the logo. Neowin’s report also does not include measured load times or a usability study.

Why did Microsoft redesign the homepage?
Peter Bale, identified by Neowin as MSN UK Executive Producer at Microsoft, said readers wanted a homepage that “downloaded faster,” put desired content “easily to hand,” and helped them “stay connected to their friends.” Those were stated reader requests and design aims, not evidence that the new page had been measured to load faster.
Matt Ball, identified as editor of MSN UK, described the editorial team’s coverage as including breaking news, topical issues, interviews, bespoke features and celebrity gossip. His comments put the redesign in the context of both editorial content and social services. Neowin reported both statements.

How many people used MSN UK?
Neowin cited “recent comScore data” saying MSN UK had 20.6 million unique users per month. The report did not identify the month or measurement period and did not link to the underlying comScore data. Treat the number as a figure reported at the time, not as a current audience estimate. Microsoft’s current UK overview describes MSN as a personalized feed of news, entertainment and inspiration available through MSN.com, Edge and an MSN app. It discusses recommendations and account sign-in, and notes that availability can vary by device, market and browser version. Current app features promoted by Microsoft include Copilot, weather, stock tracking and short videos. These are current product details, not features established for the 2010 redesign. Microsoft’s current MSN overview and current app information provide that present-day context.

Microsoft Support says signing in with a Microsoft account can carry personalization across devices. Without signing in, some settings may be stored in cookies and limited to the same browser and computer. Support also describes MSN navigation areas—the mega menu, services stripe and today stripe—and identifies Bing as MSN’s search engine. Those instructions describe current use, not the 2010 launch. Microsoft Support on personalization and its MSN navigation guidance explain the current experience.
