Microsoft Recall is a searchable history of screen snapshots for eligible Copilot+ PCs. When snapshot saving is enabled, it periodically captures what is on screen so you can search for something you previously viewed. Microsoft says Recall does not record audio or save continuous video, so describing it as a feature that records literally everything you do is inaccurate.
What Microsoft Recall captures—and what it doesn’t
Recall takes screen snapshots and indexes them so you can search and revisit on-screen content from earlier. It is a visual history of activity displayed on the PC, not a continuous video recording or a log of every action.
Microsoft says Recall does not record audio or save continuous video. Its snapshots can still contain sensitive information that was visible on screen, which is why the feature’s controls and filtering matter.
Who can use Recall
Recall is available for eligible Copilot+ PCs, not every Windows computer. Access depends on the PC’s hardware, Windows version, and applicable rollout and market support. Microsoft’s documented update path requires the April 2025 Windows non-security preview update or later.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
Microsoft described Recall as generally available on Copilot+ PCs in an April 25, 2025 post, with a phased rollout. That announcement does not establish that every compatible device or region has access now. Check your exact PC model and installed Windows version against Microsoft’s Recall overview and requirements before relying on availability.
Where snapshots are stored, according to Microsoft
Microsoft says Recall snapshots and related data remain on the device and are not shared with Microsoft or other third parties through the feature. This is Microsoft’s description of Recall’s architecture, not an independent security audit. Microsoft published a revised security and privacy architecture in September 2024; its technical documentation explains the design and management considerations.

Controls for pausing, filtering, and deleting snapshots
Microsoft documents user controls to pause snapshot saving, exclude apps and websites, and delete saved material. Deletion can be managed by time range or by app or website. Consult Microsoft’s Recall support guidance for the current settings and steps for your Windows version.
Microsoft also describes sensitive-information filtering: under supported configurations, its on-device Microsoft Classification Engine may prevent snapshots from being saved when certain sensitive conditions are detected. You can also exclude specific apps and sites. Filtering is not a guarantee that sensitive content will never be captured; behavior depends on supported configurations and what is displayed.

How organizations can manage Recall
Administrators can use Windows management policies to control whether Recall is allowed and whether snapshot saving is turned off. Microsoft also documents integration options with supported data-loss-prevention providers. Organizations should check Microsoft’s management documentation and their own policies before enabling the feature on managed devices.

How to decide whether Recall is right for your PC
- Confirm eligibility: Check the exact PC model, Windows build, and current market availability; the Copilot+ PC label alone does not confirm that Recall is enabled on your device.
- Review the controls: Decide whether pausing saving, excluding apps or sites, and deleting snapshots meet your privacy needs.
- Account for filtering limits: Do not treat sensitive-information filtering as a guarantee against every possible capture.
- Check device management: On a work or school PC, administrator policies may determine whether Recall or snapshot saving is available.
