Microsoft had planned to begin a Windows Insider preview that month, then postponed it on October 31. The company announced general availability on Copilot+ PCs on April 25, 2025, while continuing to label Recall a “preview” experience. The official documentation reviewed here does not establish a new October 2026 launch.
What happened to Microsoft Recall’s October launch?
The October date referred to an intended Windows Insider preview, not a general release. Microsoft’s timeline was:
| Date | What Microsoft said |
|---|---|
| June 7, 2024 | Microsoft published an update describing Recall’s privacy controls and security approach. Microsoft’s Recall update |
| August 21, 2024 | Microsoft said it planned to make Recall available to Windows Insiders starting in October, before broader availability. Microsoft’s Recall update |
| October 31, 2024 | Microsoft said it needed more time and moved the planned Insider preview to December. Microsoft’s Recall update |
| April 25, 2025 | Microsoft announced general availability of Recall (preview) on Copilot+ PCs through the April 2025 Windows non-security preview update, with a gradual consumer rollout over the following month. Timing varied by device and market; Microsoft said the European Economic Area would follow later in 2025. Microsoft’s April 25, 2025 announcement |
In other words, the feature became available after the delayed preview period, but “preview” remained part of Microsoft’s product description. That status label is distinct from whether the feature has rolled out to a particular eligible PC.
What does Recall do?
Recall is an optional Windows feature that helps you find things you previously saw on your PC. If you enable snapshot saving, Windows periodically saves images of the active screen along with associated information. You can use a visual timeline or semantic search to look for remembered text or visual content and return to the relevant app, website, image, or document. Microsoft says Recall does not record audio or save continuous video. Microsoft Learn: Recall overview · Microsoft Support: Recall privacy and controls

Does my PC support Recall?
Recall is for qualifying Copilot+ PCs, not ordinary Windows 11 PCs simply by virtue of running Windows 11. Microsoft Learn lists a Copilot+ PC powered by Qualcomm, Intel, or AMD and the April 2025 Windows non-security preview update or later as prerequisites. Arm64EC is not currently supported. Microsoft Support lists these minimum requirements: Microsoft Learn · Microsoft Support: Recall requirements
- A secured-core Copilot+ PC with an NPU rated at 40 TOPS.
- At least 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage capacity.
- At least 50 GB of free storage to enable Recall. Snapshot saving pauses automatically if free space falls below 25 GB.
- Device encryption or BitLocker.
- Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security, with at least one biometric sign-in option.
Check the current requirements and your specific PC’s specifications before relying on eligibility, because Microsoft’s documentation may change.

Browser filtering support
Microsoft lists Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Chrome as supporting filters for specified websites and private browsing activity. Other Chromium-based browsers at version 124 or later filter private browsing activity but do not support filtering specific websites, according to Microsoft Support. Work and school PCs
On managed commercial and education devices, Microsoft says Recall is removed by default until an IT administrator allows it. The user must still opt in to saving snapshots; an administrator cannot turn on snapshot saving on the user’s behalf. Microsoft Support: Recall requirements

Is Windows Recall turned on by default?
No. Microsoft says snapshot saving is off until the user opts in. You can turn saving off or pause it temporarily, filter apps and supported websites, delete snapshots, set a storage limit, and choose how long snapshots are kept. Microsoft also says sensitive-information filtering is enabled by default and may filter content such as passwords and credit-card information. Filtering is a safeguard, not a guarantee that every sensitive item will be detected. Microsoft Support: Recall privacy and controls · Microsoft Support: Recall requirements
Does Recall send screenshots to Microsoft?
Microsoft says Recall processes and stores snapshots locally and that Microsoft cannot access or view them. It says snapshots are not shared with third parties or other Windows users on the device. Microsoft describes snapshots and associated index data as encrypted, with protection tied to Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security; Windows Hello authentication is required to open Recall or change its settings. Microsoft says ordinary diagnostic data may depend on Windows privacy settings. It also says that sending feedback from Recall can transmit Recall data, including screenshots a user attaches. What should you do if you want to use Recall?
- Check the PC first. Confirm that it is a qualifying Copilot+ PC and meets the processor, memory, storage, free-space, encryption, and Windows Hello requirements listed by Microsoft Support. Review Recall requirements
- Check Windows and rollout availability. Microsoft Learn specifies the April 2025 Windows non-security preview update or later. Rollout timing may vary by device and market. Review the Recall overview · Read Microsoft’s rollout announcement
- For a managed PC, check with IT. An administrator may need to allow Recall, but you still choose whether to opt in to snapshot saving.
- Review the controls before opting in. Decide which apps or supported websites to filter, how much storage to allocate, how long to retain snapshots, and whether to pause or delete them as needed. Review Recall privacy controls
If your current computer does not qualify, there is no reason to buy a new PC solely on the assumption that every Windows 11 computer supports Recall. Start with the current hardware requirements and decide whether the feature is worth a hardware change for your needs.

What Microsoft says about Recall’s benefits
Microsoft’s April 25, 2025 announcement cites a Microsoft-commissioned online study in which 69% of U.S. consumers aged 13 or older said they felt overwhelmed by too much information. Edelman DXI and Assembly conducted the study with 1,000 participants in March 2025. This describes that survey, not all consumers or a measured Recall outcome. Microsoft’s cited figures and methodology
The same announcement reports that Microsoft-commissioned Principled Technologies testing found up to 70% less time to find and reengage with a PowerPoint presentation using pre-release Recall on Copilot+ PCs than with manual workflows on a Windows 10 PC. The test was conducted in March 2025; Microsoft says results vary with device specifications, configuration, usage, and other factors. It is a vendor-reported test result, not a general time-saving promise or an independent estimate. Microsoft’s cited figures and methodology
What Microsoft has and has not established
Microsoft’s official material documents Recall’s timeline, eligibility requirements, controls, and the company’s claims about local processing and security. The cited figures describe a commissioned survey and test. They do not establish independent adoption rates, an independent effectiveness study, or an independent security assessment.
