Start with the Windows tools already on your PC. Install Microsoft PowerToys only when you can name a recurring task that one of its utilities handles better for your setup. PowerToys is a free, optional collection—not a required Windows component—and its value is in specific workflow features, not a general performance boost.

What PowerToys adds to Windows

Microsoft describes PowerToys as a free, open-source collection of utilities for power users and developers. Its current overview lists more than 30 tools, including FancyZones for custom window layouts, PowerRename for bulk file renaming, PowerToys Run for launching items, Color Picker, Awake, Always On Top, and Keyboard Manager. You can enable or disable utilities individually in PowerToys settings; installing the collection does not mean you need to use every tool.

PowerToys is available from Microsoft’s GitHub releases and the Microsoft Store. Microsoft’s installation guidance also documents WinGet and community package managers. That page lists Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1/build 19041) or newer, with a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor, as minimum requirements. Check the current release page and requirements before installing, since both can change.

What built-in Windows tools already handle

Arranging windows

Windows Snap offers predefined layouts, Snap Assist, mouse and keyboard placement, and Snap groups. In Windows 11, open the Snap flyout from a window’s maximize button or press Windows+Z. If those arrangements work for the windows and screen setup you use, FancyZones may not add enough value to justify installing PowerToys. Consider FancyZones when you want custom zones or layouts you can reuse. Microsoft’s Snap guidance describes the built-in layouts.

Keeping copied items

Press Windows+V to open Clipboard history. Microsoft says it can store up to 25 entries; the history clears at restart except for pinned items. You can also choose to sync it across devices using the same Microsoft or work account. If that capacity and persistence suit your routine, there may be no need to add another clipboard-related workflow. Microsoft’s Clipboard guidance explains the feature.

Capturing and reading screen content

Press Windows+Shift+S to open the capture overlay. Snipping Tool supports freeform, rectangular, window, full-screen, and video snips, along with editing and sharing. Its text actions include OCR; availability of some newer AI-assisted features depends on having a Copilot+ PC. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance for current details.

Renaming files

File Explorer handles ordinary file renaming. PowerRename is worth evaluating when you regularly need a dedicated bulk-renaming workflow; it is not a reason for every Windows user to install PowerToys.

Choose by the task you repeat

The PowerToys options below address related needs, but they are not necessarily one-for-one replacements for built-in Windows features. Use the decision test rather than comparing feature counts alone.

For occasional or routine tasks, the built-in tools are a sensible default. Try PowerToys when a recurring task—such as creating custom window zones, bulk-renaming files, remapping keys, or keeping a window on top—matches a particular utility. Start by enabling the one that addresses that task, rather than turning on the entire collection by default. The current PowerToys overview lists its utilities; check its documentation for behavior that matters to your workflow.

Check Windows support as well as PowerToys compatibility

PowerToys’ installation page lists Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 or later. That compatibility listing does not mean Windows 10 remains supported: Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you are using Windows 10, check your operating system’s support and upgrade position separately. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice covers the end date.

PowerToys is maintained and its tools can change over time. The overview currently lists more than 30 utilities, but that count and roster should not be treated as permanent. Microsoft Learn’s overview is dated April 26, 2026, and its installation page is dated August 20, 2025; confirm current details on Microsoft’s pages before relying on a specific utility or requirement.

Is PowerToys worth installing?

It can be, if one of its utilities solves a repeated problem the Windows tools you already have do not address well. If Snap, Clipboard history, Snipping Tool, and File Explorer cover your routine needs, there is no requirement to install PowerToys. Microsoft’s product and support pages describe features and setup, but do not establish a comparative productivity gain or show that PowerToys makes every PC faster.
