Microsoft plans to build two AI data center buildings in Abilene, Texas, beside the campus developed for OpenAI and Oracle. The project is being developed with Crusoe and includes a planned on-site power plant. The available announcement does not establish when the buildings will be completed or open.

Where are Microsoft’s two new data centers?

The planned buildings are in Abilene, in west-central Texas. They are additions to a larger data center complex that already includes facilities associated with OpenAI and Oracle. The Associated Press reported the Microsoft plans on March 27, 2026, citing a statement from developer Crusoe: Associated Press report.

Microsoft’s buildings are a distinct project, not the OpenAI and Oracle facilities. The neighboring projects share a location, but they have different customer arrangements and should not be treated as one data center development.

How large is the Abilene project?

AP reported that the additions would bring the Abilene complex to ten buildings, with expected computing capacity of 2.1 gigawatts. That is a reported project expectation for the full ten-building complex, not a measurement of operating capacity or a figure for Microsoft’s two buildings alone. The AP report does not give a separate computing-capacity figure for the Microsoft buildings.

AP also reported that a 900-megawatt power plant is planned for Microsoft’s project. That number describes the plant’s generation capability; it is not the computing capacity of the buildings, nor does it establish how much electricity they will consume in operation. The 2.1-gigawatt computing figure and the 900-megawatt generation figure refer to different things.

Is the Microsoft project part of Stargate?

No. The two new buildings are Microsoft’s project with Crusoe, while the neighboring campus is associated with OpenAI and Oracle and is part of the separate Stargate project. OpenAI’s head of compute infrastructure, Sachin Katti, said in a post on X, quoted by AP, “We considered expanding it further, but ultimately chose to put that additional capacity in other locations.” That comment describes OpenAI’s decision about its own capacity, not Microsoft’s plans.

What is known about construction and opening?

The AP report does not provide a completion date, opening date, or later construction milestone for Microsoft’s two Abilene buildings. It also does not establish a project-specific cooling or water design, detailed site plan, workforce estimate, or financing terms. Those details should not be inferred from the campus’s scale or from specifications Microsoft has published for other sites.

How does Abilene fit Microsoft’s other Texas data center plans?

Abilene is separate from Microsoft’s planned campus in Pecos, Texas, announced in June 2026. Microsoft described approximately 2 gigawatts of capacity addition for the Pecos campus; that figure applies to Pecos, not the Abilene buildings. See Microsoft’s Pecos announcement.

Other Microsoft projects provide context but do not indicate Abilene’s schedule or design. Microsoft said its first Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, facility was operational in June 2026 and a second facility there was under construction, with completion scheduled for 2028. Its descriptions of the Fairwater site in Wisconsin discuss liquid cooling and a closed-loop water system; Microsoft has said more than 90 percent of its data center capacity uses the described closed-loop approach. Those company-wide and site-specific descriptions are not specifications for Abilene.
