You can still use it if it is already installed, but Microsoft removed it from the Microsoft Store on November 4, 2024, so it is no longer officially available as a new Store download. It was not preinstalled on Windows 11. Microsoft’s deprecated-features guidance names Paint for 2D images and Babylon.js Sandbox for viewing 3D content as alternatives.
Can you still download Paint 3D?
No—not from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft deprecated Paint 3D in August 2024 and removed it from the Store on November 4, 2024. Microsoft says existing installations continue to work, but that does not make the app available for a new official Store installation. Avoid unofficial download sites, which may distribute altered or unsafe installers.
Paint 3D was included on some Windows 10 devices, but it was not preinstalled on Windows 11. If you already have the app on a compatible Windows PC, open it from the Start menu and see whether it runs. Microsoft does not document a supported new-download route after its Store removal.
What Paint 3D was designed to do
Microsoft introduced Paint 3D with the Windows 10 Creators Update as a free built-in app for 2D scenes and 3D creations. The April 17, 2017 Microsoft tutorial demonstrated how to combine objects, drawings, photos, and effects in a scene.

- 3D objects: Add premade objects, rotate them, paint their surfaces, and position them along the Z axis.
- 3D Doodle: Draw an outline and turn it into a 3D shape.
- Magic Select and stickers: Cut a subject out of a photo, make it a sticker, then wrap or tile it onto a 3D object.
- Remix 3D: Browse and remix community models. Microsoft described this feature as available only in select markets.
- Effects and viewing: Apply lighting and material effects, then use View in 3D to inspect a scene from different angles.
- 2D tools: Microsoft also described familiar photo-editing, line-and-curve, and 2D-creation features in its July 24, 2017 statement.
How to make a 3D Doodle
If Paint 3D is installed and working on your PC, the basic workflow is to draw a shape and convert it into a 3D form. Microsoft’s 2017 tutorial documents the feature; exact screen labels can vary by app version.
- Open Paint 3D and start a new canvas.
- Choose a 3D Doodle tool and draw the outline or stroke for the shape you want.
- Let Paint 3D turn the drawing into a 3D object, then adjust its depth, position, and rotation.
- Use brushes or stickers to add color and surface detail, and inspect the result from different angles with View in 3D.
Can you remove a photo background or use a stylus?
Removing a subject from a photo
Paint 3D’s Magic Select tool was designed to select a subject in a photo and separate it from its background, turning the cutout into a sticker. That sticker could then be used in a 2D composition or applied to a 3D object. This is a documented feature of the original app, not a promise that it is available in every version or installation today.

Using a pen or stylus
A compatible digital pen was optional, not a requirement. Microsoft’s original tutorial showed creation with a digital pen, while the app’s drawing and object tools could also be used with other computer input. The tutorial does not establish a particular stylus model or guarantee compatibility with every device.
What should you use instead?
Microsoft’s current guidance points to Paint for 2D images and Babylon.js Sandbox for viewing 3D content. Those recommendations address different parts of Paint 3D’s former role; the cited guidance does not present either as a direct replacement for the app’s full combination of 2D editing and 3D authoring.

Choose Paint if your task is 2D image work, or Babylon.js Sandbox if you need to view 3D content. If you need to create or edit 3D scenes, Microsoft’s cited alternatives do not establish a like-for-like replacement for Paint 3D’s authoring tools.

Paint 3D’s launch-era promise was tied to the Windows 10 Creators Update. Microsoft later clarified that classic MS Paint would remain available, saying in July 2017 that it would have “a new home soon, in the Windows Store where it will be available for free.” That historical Store plan should not be confused with Paint 3D’s later removal: they are separate apps and separate announcements. The current availability information is in Microsoft’s deprecated-features guidance.
