Microsoft announced around 4,800 role eliminations company-wide on July 6, 2026. On September 22, Xbox announced 268 more role eliminations—but those cuts were part of Xbox’s restructuring plan announced in July, not a new Microsoft-wide round. Xbox said the actions completed since July had taken it roughly three-quarters of the way through that plan.
What happened in Microsoft’s second round of layoffs?
The September 22 announcement covered 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. Xbox leader Matt Booty described the cuts as part of the restructuring announced in July. The update also covered studio reorganizations and separate consultation processes involving Ninja Theory and Arkane; those developments were not part of the 268-role figure.
Booty said, “The actions completed since July, inclusive of the studio divestitures, bring us roughly three-quarters of the way through previously announced restructuring.” This was Xbox’s progress update on its existing plan, not an announcement that Microsoft had begun a second company-wide layoff round.
How many Microsoft employees were laid off?
The figures refer to different dates, organizational scopes and stages of the plans. They should not be added together as though each were a separate completed Microsoft-wide total.

Microsoft’s July announcement said most of the company-wide changes fell in Microsoft Commercial and Xbox. Coleman also said Microsoft had redeployed more than 4,000 employees over the preceding year, including 500 that month, and that more than 30% of eligible employees had chosen the recent voluntary retirement program. Those redeployments and retirements are separate figures, not additional layoffs.
Why did Microsoft and Xbox say they were cutting roles?
Microsoft’s company-wide explanation
Coleman said Microsoft was adjusting resources and roles to align investment and work with changing customer needs and business priorities. She said the July eliminated roles were not being replaced by AI: “I also want to be direct that the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI.” That statement applies to the July action; it does not establish the reason for every later Xbox decision or settle AI’s role in broader workforce changes.

Xbox’s division-specific explanation
In July, Sharma described Xbox’s business as unhealthy, saying, “Our business today is not healthy.” She cited Xbox’s assessment that it had lower margins than comparable platform and publishing businesses, a smaller install base and higher cost structure at the start of the console generation, and a need to simplify operations and focus investment. These were management’s stated assessments and rationale, not independently audited findings in the cited announcements.
Do Microsoft’s financial results explain the layoffs?
Microsoft reported FY2026 Q4 revenue of $90.0 billion, up 18% year over year, and operating income of $40.6 billion, also up 18%. The quarter ended June 30, 2026, and the results included severance expense and Xbox impairment charges. Those company-wide figures provide context but do not show that weak overall financial performance caused the role eliminations; Xbox gave a division-specific strategic explanation.

In Microsoft’s FY2026 Q3 earnings call, CFO Amy Hood said the company expected headcount to decrease year over year while continuing investment in research and development, including AI. That is company-level context, not a detailed explanation of the July or September decisions.

Microsoft’s July announcement referred generally to financial support and resources for affected employees. The September Xbox update did not specify affected employees’ locations, individual severance or benefit terms, or the decision process for each team. The July description should not be assumed to apply identically to the September action.

Xbox’s September update also said consultation on a proposed Ninja Theory closure was ongoing, and that consultation with Arkane remained underway and was expected to continue through the end of 2026. These were separate studio developments; the update did not present them as part of the 268 announced role eliminations. As of October 4, 2026, an Xbox town hall scheduled for October 6 had not taken place.
