Microsoft released KB5006744 on October 19, 2021, as an optional, non-security preview update for OS Build 17763.2268. Despite the broad Windows 10 framing, it applied to specific LTSC editions and Windows Server 2019—not every Windows 10 edition. Microsoft’s release notes describe fixes for kiosk, sign-in, BitLocker, search, networking, and other issues. This is a historical update, not a current installation recommendation.
What KB5006744 was and which systems it covered
Microsoft classified KB5006744 as a non-security cumulative update preview containing quality improvements. It was released on October 19, 2021, for OS Build 17763.2268. Microsoft’s release page names Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019, Windows 10 IoT Core LTSC, and Windows Server 2019 as applicable products. The Microsoft Update Catalog lists Windows 10 Version 1809 packages for x86, ARM64, and x64, plus a Windows Server 2019 x64 package. These details do not mean the update was offered to every Windows 10 edition. Microsoft’s release notes and the Update Catalog listing provide the product and package information.
What issues Microsoft said it addressed
The release notes list these changes. They describe Microsoft’s intended fixes; they are not independent confirmation of outcomes on every affected system.
- Fixed a
PropertyGetissue inJScript9.dll. - Addressed Assigned Access kiosks using Microsoft Edge that could fail to restart Edge after a user closed its window.
- Fixed intermittent black screens at sign-in on the credentials page when App-V was in use.
- Addressed systems entering BitLocker recovery after a servicing update.
- Fixed
searchindexer.exeretaining handles to a per-user search database after sign-out. That could cause the process to stop and lead to duplicate profile names. - Addressed a memory leak from
DnsPsProvider.dllin aWmiPrvSE.exeprocess. - Fixed an issue that could prevent Windows 10 VPN users from connecting to Windows Server 2019 Routing and Remote Access service servers.
- Addressed Software-Defined Networking virtual machines failing when configured with a Generic Routing Encapsulation VPN bandwidth limitation.
- Fixed a possible Code Integrity memory leak.
- Improved Microsoft Defender for Endpoint’s ability to identify and intercept ransomware and advanced attacks.
Prerequisite and availability
Microsoft required the August 10, 2021 servicing stack update, KB5005112, before installing this cumulative update. At the time, the preview was available through Windows Update under Optional updates and from the Microsoft Update Catalog. It was not offered through Windows Update for Business; administrators using WSUS could import it manually. See the release notes for the servicing and delivery details.

Removal limitation
Microsoft says the combined servicing stack update (SSU) and latest cumulative update (LCU) package cannot be removed with wusa.exe /uninstall. The LCU can be removed with DISM by specifying its package name, but the SSU cannot be removed after installation. This distinction matters if you are reviewing the historical installation procedure or managing a system that still has the update.

Microsoft’s release page lists several known issues, with applicability varying by system and configuration. It identifies later updates that resolved some of them:

- Language-pack component error: The page documents an issue involving an older language-pack component and provides guidance; it does not indicate that every installation was affected.
- Cluster service startup: Some environments could encounter a cluster service startup failure after KB5001342 or a later update. Microsoft provides guidance on the release page.
- Remote printer connections: Some print servers could produce connection errors. Microsoft says this was not commonly seen on devices designed for home use; KB5007266 later resolved the described printer issue.
- Defender for Endpoint on Server Core: The page describes startup or runtime problems on Windows Server Core, later resolved in KB5008218. Microsoft explicitly says this issue did not affect Defender for Endpoint on Windows 10.
- KMS activation: A described issue affected specified LTSC clients using a new CSVLK; Microsoft identifies KB5009616 as the later fix.
