On August 20, 2025, police detained protesters at Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington, during demonstrations against the company’s technology relationship with Israel. The Associated Press initially reported 18 arrests; a GeekWire follow-up on August 22 said the total had risen to 20. Protesters called on Microsoft to end its ties, citing allegations about Israeli military use of Azure.
Why were people arrested at Microsoft’s Redmond headquarters?
The protest was organized by people associated with No Azure for Apartheid, who demanded that Microsoft cut its technology ties with Israel. The demonstrations followed reports alleging that the Israeli military used Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform in connection with surveillance data about Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
The Associated Press reported that protesters splashed red paint on a Microsoft sign. The group characterized Microsoft’s technology as being used to “surveil, starve, and kill” Palestinians; that is the protesters’ characterization, not an independently established finding.
Redmond police spokesperson Jill Green told the Associated Press that protesters were asked to leave and did not do so: “We said, ‘Please leave or you will be arrested,’ and they chose not to leave so they were detained.” AP reported that police cited charges including trespassing, malicious mischief, resisting arrest, and obstruction. These were reported charges, not convictions.

How many people were arrested?
The reported total changed as coverage was updated. The Associated Press reported 18 arrests in its initial report on August 20. GeekWire reported on August 22 that the total had risen to 20. These are dated figures from contemporaneous reports; the later count should not be conflated with the separate arrests on August 26.
GeekWire reported Microsoft’s statement that, among the 20, one person was a current employee and three were former employees; Microsoft said almost all the others had never worked for the company. AP said it was initially unclear how many of those detained were Microsoft employees.

What has Microsoft said about Azure and Israel?
Microsoft has acknowledged providing Israel’s Ministry of Defense with software, professional services, Azure cloud services, and Azure AI services, including language translation. The company describes the relationship as a standard commercial one governed by its terms of service and AI Code of Conduct.
Microsoft said its internal and external reviews found no evidence that its technology had been used to harm people. It also said it cannot see some customer use on customer servers or government cloud operations supported by other providers. Those statements describe the company’s position and stated visibility limits; they do not independently settle what occurred in every use of the services. Microsoft’s statement on its work in Israel and Gaza was updated on August 15, 2025.

What review did Microsoft announce?
On August 15, 2025, Microsoft said it had engaged Covington & Burling, with technical assistance from an independent consulting firm, to review further allegations reported by The Guardian. Those allegations concerned an IDF unit’s use of Azure to store phone-call data from mass surveillance of civilians in Gaza and the West Bank.
Microsoft said the allegations warranted a “full and urgent review” and that it would publish factual findings when the review was complete. The sources cited here do not establish the review’s final outcome. Microsoft also said its standard terms of service prohibit the alleged type of usage; that is the company’s stated policy position, not a court or independent regulator’s finding.

How did accounts of the confrontation differ?
Accounts of the August 20 protest and police response are not identical. AP reported police’s account that protesters remained after being asked to leave, and said no injuries had been reported at the time. Organizers later alleged police violence. GeekWire reported that police said they had received no claims from protesters and confirmed that pepper balls were used.
Microsoft described the campus protest as destructive and aggressive and said it did not represent its workforce. These are distinct police, organizer, and company accounts; the available reporting does not independently resolve every disputed detail.
A separate arrest incident on August 26
On August 26, protesters occupied Microsoft President Brad Smith’s office. The Associated Press reported that police arrested seven people and that Smith said two of those arrested were Microsoft employees. This was a separate event from the August 20 plaza protest and its arrest figures.
