Microsoft says it fixed a Windows 11 issue that could prevent IIS and other server-side applications using HTTP.sys from accepting incoming connections. The issue was tied to specific updates for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, and Microsoft lists KB5067036 as the resolution. To apply available fixes, check Windows Update and restart—even if it offers nothing to install.

What the localhost connection bug did

After installing certain Windows 11 updates, some server-side applications that rely on HTTP.sys could have trouble accepting incoming connections. Microsoft’s concrete example is an IIS site hosted locally, such as http://localhost/. A browser might fail to load the site and show ERR_CONNECTION_RESET.

People described the problem in Microsoft Q&A threads with phrases such as “Localhost not working anymore.” Those are user-reported descriptions, not Microsoft’s formal diagnosis. The technical scope Microsoft gives is narrower: affected applications rely on HTTP.sys, and the issue did not occur in every environment.

Which Windows versions and updates were involved?

Microsoft’s release-health records identify Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 as affected. The issue was associated with the following updates:

Windows 11 version Update associated with the issue
25H2 KB5065789, the September 29, 2025 non-security update
24H2 KB5066835, the October 14, 2025 security update

Microsoft says whether the problem occurred could depend on conditions including internet connectivity, when the update was installed, and device restarts. Installing one of the listed updates did not mean every affected application or PC would show the symptom.

Microsoft’s later clarification says the issue does not apply to Windows Server 2025. The current scope is Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, not every Windows installation or every localhost failure.

How to install Microsoft’s fix

Microsoft identifies KB5067036 as addressing the issue and records it as resolved on October 28, 2025. Its recommended action is to check for Windows updates and restart the device.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install any updates offered.
  3. Restart the device, even if Windows Update reports that no updates are available.

Microsoft’s update page states: “This issue is addressed in KB5067036.” If KB5067036 or a later update is already installed, the documented issue is considered resolved; the required step in Microsoft’s guidance is still to restart after checking for updates.

If localhost still fails after updating

This Windows issue is one possible cause, not a diagnosis for every localhost connection failure. If the problem persists after Windows Update and a restart, first check whether the application is actually an IIS or other server-side service that relies on HTTP.sys. Microsoft’s documented fix addresses the specific update-related issue; it does not establish that unrelated application, service, or configuration problems will be corrected by the same update.

Do not treat registry edits, update rollbacks, or third-party utilities as Microsoft’s prescribed fix for this issue. Microsoft’s stated remedy is Windows Update followed by a restart.
