Microsoft fixed a specific Windows 10 OneDrive problem with the out-of-band update KB5020953, released on October 28, 2022. The issue could make OneDrive stop working after a user unlinked a device, stopped syncing, or signed out. This was a fix for that documented trigger—not a general remedy for every OneDrive crash, and it is not a new rollout.

What caused the documented OneDrive problem?

Microsoft’s KB5020953 release notes describe an issue in which OneDrive stopped working after a user unlinked their device, stopped syncing, or signed out of their account. The notice does not establish that these actions caused every OneDrive crash on Windows 10.

The update was an out-of-band Windows update published October 28, 2022. Its purpose was to address this specific OneDrive behavior, rather than to provide a general troubleshooting fix. Microsoft’s KB5020953 release notes identify the affected behavior and Windows versions.

Which Windows 10 versions did KB5020953 cover?

Microsoft lists Windows 10 versions 21H1, 21H2, and 22H2, along with selected 20H2 editions: Enterprise Multi-Session, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise. The update record names OS builds 19042.2194, 19043.2194, 19044.2194, and 19045.2194. Applicability depended on the Windows version and edition; these build numbers should not be read as a single build for all Windows 10 devices.

What should you do if OneDrive is having trouble now?

First distinguish the old unlinking/sign-out issue from a current service interruption, sign-in problem, or outdated app. Microsoft’s current guidance offers these checks:

These checks address present-day troubleshooting; they do not change the scope or date of the KB5020953 fix.

How does Windows 10 support affect OneDrive?

Separately from the 2022 fix, Microsoft says support for OneDrive desktop apps running on Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier ended on August 15, 2026. Those app versions may continue to work, but they will not receive new updates, and Microsoft does not guarantee compatibility or functionality. This support change is not part of KB5020953.
