Use Microsoft Entra registered for a personal or BYOD device when its user should keep a personal Windows sign-in and your organization needs a device identity for work access. Use Microsoft Entra joined for an organization-managed device that users should sign in to with organizational credentials. Neither label alone guarantees Intune enrollment: registration is separate from MDM, while a joined Windows device can enroll automatically if automatic enrollment is configured.

At a glance: registered or joined?

Decision point Entra registered Entra joined
Typical fit Personal or BYOD devices, including many mobile scenarios Organization-owned Windows endpoints, especially cloud-managed devices
Windows sign-in The user keeps a local or personal sign-in; an organizational account connects the device to work resources The user signs in to the device with an organizational account
Ownership and control May be user- or organization-owned; registration alone does not mean the device is fully managed Designed for organizational use and management
Intune Requires a separate MDM enrollment decision; registration itself is not enrollment Can be managed by Intune; automatic enrollment depends on configuration
Typical Windows setup Settings or an organization’s enrollment flow Windows setup (OOBE), Settings, bulk enrollment, or Windows Autopilot, depending on deployment

Microsoft distinguishes a device’s identity relationship from its management enrollment. In Windows deployments, registration is the usual fit for personal devices, and join is common for organization-owned devices. Those are typical patterns, not rules about legal ownership: a registered device can belong to an organization, and a personal device can be joined if the user knowingly accepts organizational management. See Microsoft’s registered-device overview and joined-device overview.

What Entra registration means for Intune

Registration gives the device an identity relationship with Microsoft Entra ID so it can be recognized in work-access scenarios. It does not by itself enroll the device in Intune or give IT full device-management capability. An administrator can allow a registered device to be separately enrolled in an MDM such as Intune; whether to do that should be an explicit decision about the data and settings the organization will manage.

For a personal Windows device where the goal is work access with limited organizational control, registration is often the suitable starting point. If your policy requires Intune management, arrange the separate enrollment and tell users what enrollment allows IT to manage. Do not assume that seeing a device in Entra means it is enrolled or compliant in Intune.

What Entra join changes

Joining places the Windows device in an organizational sign-in model: users sign in to the device with their work or school account. It is intended for organizational use and suits endpoints IT provisions and manages, including cloud-native devices that do not need an on-premises Active Directory domain join.

Intune enrollment remains configuration-dependent. When Windows automatic MDM enrollment is configured, enrollment can occur as part of the join flow. Without that configuration, do not assume that join alone enrolled the device in Intune. Microsoft’s Windows device enrollment guide describes the available enrollment approaches and configuration.

Choose based on device ownership, sign-in, and control

Personal Windows device; work access, limited management

Register the device, then decide separately whether your policy calls for Intune enrollment. This preserves the user’s local or personal Windows sign-in. Make the enrollment choice transparent: MDM enrollment is a distinct step with management implications, not a synonym for adding a work account.

Personal device that the organization intends to manage fully

Joining may be possible, but it changes the device sign-in model and should not be presented as routine BYOD setup. Get the user’s informed agreement that the organization intends to manage the device before proceeding.

Organization-owned Windows endpoint

Choose Entra join for a cloud-native organizational device, and configure automatic Intune enrollment if it is part of your deployment. Join supports organizational sign-in and management workflows; the enrollment configuration determines whether Intune enrollment happens automatically.

Device that still depends on on-premises Active Directory

Assess Microsoft Entra hybrid join when the endpoint must remain joined to an on-premises AD domain. Hybrid-joined devices retain that domain dependency, including domain-controller line of sight for initial sign-in and device management. For new, refurbished, or reset devices in a move toward cloud-native endpoints, Microsoft recommends considering Entra join instead. Details are in Microsoft’s cloud-native endpoint guidance.

Account for Conditional Access and device identity

Entra device identity can participate in access decisions, but the identity state is only one part of the configuration. Device-based Conditional Access and Intune MDM scenarios have device-identity prerequisites; the applicable enrollment, compliance, and access policies determine how a device is treated. Check the design against Microsoft’s device identity overview, and do not equate registration with Intune compliance or managed status.

A Windows enrollment choice that can be misleading

In the Windows enrollment flows documented by Microsoft, “Enroll only in device management” can register a device in Entra ID while leaving the device itself unmanaged by Intune. That differs from the “Email address” flow and from choosing “Join this device to Microsoft Entra ID.” The exact screens and labels can change with Windows and Intune updates, so administrators should validate the current enrollment flow and tenant configuration rather than relying on old screenshots. Consult the current Microsoft Intune Windows enrollment guide.

Practical decision checklist

  • Choose registration when users should retain personal device sign-in and the organization needs a device identity for work access.
  • Choose join when the endpoint is intended for organizational sign-in and management.
  • Decide separately whether the device must enroll in Intune; verify automatic enrollment configuration before expecting it during Windows join.
  • Before enrolling a personal device in MDM or joining it, explain the management expectations and obtain the user’s agreement.
  • For endpoints that need an on-premises AD domain, assess hybrid join and its domain-controller connectivity requirements.
  • Align Conditional Access decisions with the actual device identity, enrollment, and policy state rather than the label alone.
