The change does not mean Microsoft is ending VPNs across Microsoft 365, and it is not a new shutdown taking place in October 2026. Microsoft’s notice concerns a specific Defender feature associated with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions.
Which VPN feature did Microsoft discontinue?
The discontinued feature was privacy protection in the Microsoft Defender app for individuals. Microsoft says it was available to eligible users with a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription. It was deprecated for existing users on February 28, 2025, and was not available to new users or to people reinstalling Defender after that date. See Microsoft’s end-of-support notice.
This is a feature-specific change, not an announcement that Microsoft 365 subscriptions or VPN support generally are being discontinued. Microsoft’s broad 2026 product lifecycle list does not list a Microsoft 365 VPN retirement; the Defender support notice gives the relevant date for this feature.
What happens to Microsoft 365 and the rest of Defender?
The notice says the Defender privacy protection feature is going away; it does not announce an end to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriptions. Microsoft says other Defender features continue, including data and device protection, threat alerts, and identity theft and credit monitoring in the United States. The VPN change should not be read as a cancellation of those protections.

Microsoft explains that it regularly evaluates feature usage and effectiveness and is removing privacy protection to invest in areas it believes will better align with customer needs. The notice does not name a replacement VPN provider or recommend another VPN.
Is Defender’s iOS web-protection VPN affected?
No. Microsoft distinguishes the retired privacy protection VPN from the local loop-back VPN used by Defender’s web protection on iOS. The latter supports protection against harmful links and remains available, according to Microsoft’s support FAQ. Seeing a VPN indicator on an iPhone therefore does not, by itself, mean the retired privacy feature is still active.

What should you do on your device?
Windows, iOS, and macOS
Microsoft says no action is required on these platforms.
Android
If you enabled Defender privacy protection on Android, Microsoft recommends removing its now-unused VPN profile. The profile will not affect the device if left in place, but Defender no longer uses it for privacy protection.

- Open Settings on your Android device.
- Search Settings for VPN.
- Find the Microsoft Defender VPN profile, if present, and remove it.
Do you need a separate VPN?
Only if you still want a network-privacy VPN. A separate VPN service is a different product category from Defender’s remaining web-threat, device, and identity protections; buying one does not automatically replace those Defender features. Microsoft’s notice does not endorse a provider or provide comparisons, prices, or performance results, so evaluate any independent service against your own needs and supported devices rather than treating it as Microsoft’s recommended replacement.
