Microsoft postponed its planned April 2025 removal of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) driver synchronization after customer feedback, particularly about disconnected-device scenarios. WSUS will continue synchronizing driver updates from Windows Update and importing them from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Microsoft has not announced a new removal date.

What changed in Microsoft’s WSUS plan?

Microsoft had planned to deprecate WSUS driver synchronization in April 2025. In an announcement on April 7, 2025, it said the change was postponed and the capability would continue while Microsoft worked on a revised timeline. The announcement says Microsoft will share that timeline later, but does not give a date.

Microsoft’s Windows IT Pro Blog announcement put the decision this way: “Based on your valuable feedback, we’ll continue supporting driver update synchronization to Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) servers.” It also cited feedback “especially on disconnected device scenarios.” Read Microsoft’s announcement.

What WSUS driver synchronization still does

Microsoft says WSUS will continue synchronizing driver updates from Windows Update and importing them from the Microsoft Update Catalog. In WSUS, synchronization retrieves update information and content from an update source. Microsoft’s documentation explains that the first synchronization downloads updates for selected categories; later synchronizations retrieve new updates, metadata revisions, and update expirations. For organizations that use WSUS to manage drivers in environments with limited or no internet connectivity, the postponement means the previously announced April 2025 cutoff did not take place as planned. It does not establish that the capability will remain indefinitely.

WSUS is still deprecated, but not discontinued

The postponement applies to driver synchronization, not WSUS’s broader product status. Microsoft continues to describe WSUS as deprecated: it is no longer adding new features. However, Microsoft says WSUS remains supported for production deployments and receives security and quality updates according to its product lifecycle. Microsoft’s deprecated features guidance.

In practical terms, organizations can continue using the existing WSUS capability while planning around Microsoft’s future timeline. The announcement does not say that WSUS as a whole is being retired on a newly specified date.

Why Microsoft postponed the change

Microsoft said customer feedback influenced the decision and specifically mentioned disconnected-device scenarios. Such environments may not be able to rely on cloud-connected driver management, which is why the change mattered to organizations that depend on WSUS for driver updates. Microsoft did not quantify how many deployments use disconnected environments.

In its 2024 survey announcement, Microsoft reported that 34% of participating WSUS users said they used WSUS to synchronize drivers, and 8% of participants indicated concerns about the effects of deprecation. Those figures describe survey participants, not all WSUS customers or deployments. The same earlier announcement said many surveyed users were already implementing another solution; that is not a current adoption measure. Microsoft’s 2024 WSUS announcement.

Alternatives Microsoft recommends exploring

Microsoft points organizations toward cloud management options, but its announcement does not establish that these services replace every WSUS workflow. Evaluate the fit against your connectivity constraints, the devices you manage, existing operations, and whether driver synchronization is specifically required.

Microsoft Intune Windows client update and driver management Whether cloud-connected management meets your organization’s requirements, including for driver updates.
Windows Autopatch Windows 11 client update management Whether its supported management approach fits your Windows 11 devices and operational needs.
Azure Update Manager Server update management Whether its cloud-based approach suits your server environment and connectivity requirements.

Microsoft names Intune and Windows Autopatch as options for client update management and Azure Update Manager for server update management in its WSUS deprecation guidance. Its driver synchronization announcement also recommends exploring Windows driver update management in Intune and Windows Autopatch for Windows 11. The cited guidance does not provide a feature-by-feature comparison or claim these services cover every disconnected or strictly on-premises scenario.

How administrators should respond

  1. Keep the current plan in perspective. The announced April 2025 removal of driver synchronization was postponed; it was not confirmed as permanently canceled.
  2. Document your dependencies. Identify which devices and workflows rely on WSUS driver synchronization, including any disconnected environments.
  3. Assess alternatives against real requirements. Compare connectivity, client or server scope, existing processes, and driver-update needs before changing tools.
  4. Watch for Microsoft’s revised timeline. The April 7, 2025 announcement did not specify when Microsoft would next change the capability.
