Neowin reports that worldwide rollout is now targeted to start at the end of October 2026 and finish by the end of November. Those are rollout targets, not guaranteed dates, and the feature is a guided rename-and-move workflow—not a higher sync limit.
What is changing in OneDrive?
The reported change is for the OneDrive Windows desktop sync client. When an item’s path exceeds the 520-character sync limit, the client currently asks users to shorten the path, and syncing may remain stopped until the issue is resolved. The planned workflow is intended to make that recovery more guided: it would show how many characters the path exceeds the limit by, identify path elements that can be renamed, and allow renaming even when a path is longer than 260 characters. Neowin’s report does not say the 520-character OneDrive sync limit is being raised.
How long is the delay?
Neowin’s October 6, 2026 report gives a worldwide general-availability target that begins at the end of October and completes by the end of November 2026. Microsoft may change those dates; the report is a schedule update, not confirmation that the feature is available now.
Who is affected?
The report identifies OneDrive for Business users on the Windows desktop sync client. It does not establish that the same workflow will apply to personal OneDrive or the macOS client.

Three different path limits
These limits refer to different parts of the OneDrive and Windows experience; one should not be mistaken for another.

The reported ability to rename a path longer than 260 characters is meant to help users recover from the sync error despite that separate Windows/app behavior. It does not establish that every Windows application will handle long paths differently.

What should users and administrators do now?
Until the feature reaches a user’s client, a path over the sync limit may still require shortening before sync resumes. Neowin reports that administrators need take no action to deploy the change: rollout is automatic for affected OneDrive software. Admins can use the reported timeline to set support expectations, but should not describe the workflow as already available.
Neowin points administrators to Microsoft 365 Message Center notice MC1422063. The notice itself was not independently verified here, so consult the notice in your tenant for its current status and schedule.
