Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT both let you speak instead of typing, but their voice features are not one-to-one equivalents. Copilot separates dictation, read-aloud, and live voice chat; ChatGPT offers Live, Advanced, and Standard voice modes. What you can use—and how audio and transcripts are handled—depends on your account, platform, region, and settings.

What counts as “voice” in each service?

The first useful comparison is between specific modes, not the product names alone. Dictating a prompt, hearing a written answer read aloud, and having a spoken conversation involve different capabilities and data handling.

Microsoft Copilot: dictation, read-aloud, and Copilot Voice

  • Dictation turns speech into text that you can submit as a prompt. Microsoft lists this for work or school accounts.
  • Read-aloud speaks a written Copilot response. Microsoft lists this for work or school accounts.
  • Copilot Voice is a real-time spoken conversation. Microsoft lists it for personal as well as work or school accounts, subject to eligibility.

To start Copilot Voice, use the voice icon in the composer and allow microphone access if prompted. Microsoft describes controls to mute or end the conversation, and says a text transcript is available afterward. Conversations can be interrupted and used in the background; sessions may have limits and disconnect when a limit is reached. Microsoft’s FAQ says live transcripts are on by default on desktop and off by default on mobile, with a setting to change that.

Copilot Voice can draw on existing personalization memories, but you cannot edit those memories from voice chat. Microsoft lists image creation, file creation, and agent mentions among text capabilities not then supported in voice chat; Copilot agents themselves are also not supported for voice chat, according to its voice FAQ.

ChatGPT: Live, Advanced, and Standard

  • Live supports natural back-and-forth conversation, can listen while speaking, and can use web search and memory and work with text and images when those features are enabled for the account. Live does not support video or screen sharing.
  • Advanced is the earlier real-time experience. Eligible mobile subscribers can use its supported video and screen-sharing features.
  • Standard transcribes speech before generating a response.

OpenAI documents Voice on the web and mobile apps. Eligible workspaces may also have Voice in Chat on web, iOS, and Android, and Voice in Desktop on macOS and Windows, subject to plan and workspace settings. OpenAI’s Voice FAQ says which options appear can depend on plan, workspace settings, region, app version, and parental controls. Usage limits are plan-specific and may change, so check the current options and limits shown in your account.

These feature descriptions are not a quality ranking. The vendor documentation does not provide a controlled, independent head-to-head test of recognition accuracy, response quality, or satisfaction.

Where voice is available—and what can affect access?

Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft says availability depends on subscription and region. Its FAQ lists voice chat on the web and in the Microsoft 365 app for iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac. The same FAQ says users without a Microsoft Copilot license were not yet enabled at the time of its statement, and that no access date had been announced for Government Community Cloud (GCC) and GCC High. These are rollout-sensitive details, so confirm current eligibility in your account and Microsoft’s FAQ.

The “Hey Copilot” wake phrase works only in English, according to Microsoft; conversations can continue in supported Copilot languages. Microsoft says the wake-word feature operates locally and does not record or store conversation audio. That statement applies to the wake-word feature, not to all Copilot voice conversations.

ChatGPT

For ChatGPT, access can depend on plan, workspace settings, region, app version, and parental controls. Eligible Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspace users may have access, subject to their organization’s settings. Availability and voice limits can change; a feature listed for one plan, platform, or account should not be assumed to appear for every user.

How Microsoft Copilot handles voice data

Microsoft’s Copilot voice guide distinguishes the work or school experiences:

  • Dictation: speech is sent to Microsoft for conversion to text. The guide says the dictation service does not store the audio or dictated text.
  • Read-aloud: text-to-speech runs on the client, and Microsoft says no audio is recorded or stored.
  • Copilot Voice: for work or school accounts, user and Copilot audio may be temporarily stored for feedback scenarios, accessed only if feedback is submitted, and deleted after 48 hours. Background sounds may be included. The conversation transcript is handled like other Copilot conversation history.

For personal, Family, Premium, and Pro accounts, Microsoft says transcripts are handled like other Copilot conversation history. Its FAQ says no user data is used to train the model for Copilot voice chat, while noting the feedback-audio exception. Because the guide spells out the work or school audio scenario and the FAQ describes the feedback exception, keep account type and whether feedback is involved in view rather than treating every voice experience as identical.

Some Copilot responses grounded in web search may have source hyperlinks in the text response or voice transcript, according to Microsoft’s transparency note. This does not mean every spoken answer includes citations.

How ChatGPT handles audio, video, transcripts, and training

OpenAI separates clips from transcripts and distinguishes the voice modes. Its Voice FAQ says Live and Advanced audio clips, and Advanced video clips, are stored with the transcript in chat history and retained for 30 days. If you delete a chat, the associated clips are deleted within 30 days, subject to security, safety, legal, and previously shared training exceptions.

Standard audio is deleted after transcription unless you chose to share it for training. Associated audio and video clips are not used for model training unless you choose to share them or turn on relevant recording controls. Separately, if “Improve the model for everyone” is enabled, transcripts and other files from Voice conversations may be used for training depending on plan and settings. OpenAI says voice clips cannot be shared from Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspaces. These rules do not amount to a blanket promise that all voice data is always—or never—used for training.

Which should you choose?

Choose based on the mode you need and the rules that apply to your account, rather than assuming one service is universally better.

  • Choose Copilot Voice for a spoken conversation within Copilot if it is available on your account and its current feature set meets your needs. If your task is simply entering speech as text or hearing a written answer, compare Copilot’s separate dictation and read-aloud functions instead.
  • Choose ChatGPT Live for real-time conversation if the options available to your account fit your needs; do not expect Live to provide video or screen sharing.
  • Check ChatGPT Advanced if you need mobile video or screen sharing. Those capabilities are documented for eligible subscribers, not as a universal feature.
  • Check data settings before speaking about sensitive material. Consider account type, workspace rules, whether a transcript or clip is retained, and any model-improvement or feedback controls.
  • Verify access in the actual app and account. Plan, region, platform, workspace settings, and rollout can all change what appears.

Both services can misrecognize speech, and voice responses can be wrong. Check important details rather than relying on spoken output alone. If interruptions are a problem, OpenAI suggests trying headphones, particularly around background noise or other speakers; this is a troubleshooting option, not a change to eligibility, privacy, or model quality.
