That date has passed. Microsoft also directed users to its apps and website, but a later European Commission order involving Meta does not confirm that Microsoft restored Copilot on WhatsApp.
When did Copilot stop working on WhatsApp?
Microsoft announced on November 24, 2025, that Copilot would no longer be available on WhatsApp starting January 15, 2026. Microsoft said the chatbot had launched on WhatsApp in late 2024 and that Copilot support on other third-party messaging apps would also end on January 15. Its access page repeats that end date: Microsoft’s Copilot download and access page.
Microsoft’s announcement said Copilot would remain available on WhatsApp through the cutoff. As of October 7, 2026, that cutoff is in the past; however, the sources cited here do not confirm whether Microsoft has since brought Copilot back. The European regulatory development is relevant, but it is not proof of Copilot’s current availability.
Why did Microsoft say Copilot was leaving WhatsApp?
Microsoft attributed the change to WhatsApp policy updates. The Copilot Team wrote that the policies would prohibit LLM chatbots on the platform effective January 15, 2026, and said Copilot would therefore be discontinued. That is Microsoft’s explanation, not an independently established account of Meta’s motive: Microsoft’s November 24, 2025 announcement.

What happened to users’ Copilot chat history?
Before the cutoff, Microsoft advised users who wanted to keep their conversations to export their chat history through WhatsApp’s built-in tools. Microsoft said those third-party messaging conversations were unauthenticated, so it could not transfer them into Copilot apps or its website. It also said conversations in third-party messaging apps were deleted after about 30 days by default.
Microsoft’s export advice applied before January 15, 2026. The cited material does not establish whether an unexported conversation can now be recovered, so it does not support a promise of recovery or a claim that every export is impossible.

Where can you use Copilot instead?
Microsoft pointed users to these alternatives to WhatsApp:

- Copilot website
- Copilot for Windows
- Copilot for Mac
- Copilot on GroupMe
Microsoft said users could get started on the web or through desktop and mobile apps at no cost. Some features require a subscription, and usage limits may apply; that does not mean every feature is free. Microsoft highlighted Copilot Voice, Vision, and Mico in its announcement, but the available sources do not provide a current, feature-by-feature comparison of these access routes. Does the European Commission order mean Copilot is back?
No. The European Commission said on December 4, 2025, that Meta’s policy restricted AI providers’ use of the WhatsApp Business Solution when AI was their primary service, while allowing AI for ancillary uses such as customer support. The Commission opened an antitrust investigation over concerns that the policy could prevent third-party AI services from operating through WhatsApp in the European Economic Area (EEA). An investigation and stated concern are not a final finding of infringement: European Commission announcement of the investigation.
In June 2026, the Commission announced interim measures ordering Meta to restore free WhatsApp access for competing general-purpose AI assistants on the conditions in place before October 15, 2025, while the investigation continues: European Commission interim-measures announcement. The order concerns Meta’s access conditions. It does not establish that Microsoft implemented a return or that Copilot is available on WhatsApp in the EEA or elsewhere. Check Microsoft’s current service information for Copilot’s status in your region.
