Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says the company is “long on gaming” and will continue investing in it. The remarks offer broad reassurance during a leadership transition—but Microsoft has not announced a new gaming budget, a specific Xbox roadmap, or a promise about any particular console, game, or exclusivity policy.
What Nadella said about Microsoft’s gaming commitment
In Microsoft’s February 20, 2026 leadership announcement, Nadella described gaming as central to the company’s consumer ambition: “I am long on gaming and its role at the center of our consumer ambition.” He made the statement while announcing Asha Sharma’s appointment to lead Microsoft Gaming.
Windows Central later reported that Nadella repeated the message during an internal Q&A with Sharma: “For me, we’re long on gaming. We’ll continue to invest, and we’ll always do so.” Windows Central said it verified the transcript with multiple sources. Microsoft did not publish the full Q&A transcript in the sources reviewed, so this later wording should be understood as a reported account, not a public Microsoft transcript.
The distinction matters: the public statement confirms Nadella’s stated intent, while the reported Q&A provides more context about how he described the commitment. Neither statement sets a spending target or specifies what Microsoft will fund.

What changed in Xbox leadership
Microsoft’s February 20 announcement said that Asha Sharma would become Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, reporting to Nadella. Matt Booty would become Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, reporting to Sharma. Phil Spencer had decided to retire, and Sarah Bond had decided to leave Microsoft. The company said Spencer would help Sharma with a smooth transition.
Microsoft’s announcement page carries a later editor’s note: as of April 23, 2026, Microsoft Gaming is known as XBOX, and Sharma’s title is CEO XBOX. The February appointment was announced under the Microsoft Gaming name and title.

Microsoft described its gaming portfolio as nearly 40 studios across Xbox, Bethesda, Activision Blizzard, and King, with franchises including Halo, The Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo, Candy Crush, and Fallout. The company also said it reached over 500 million monthly active users and called itself the top publisher across all platforms; those are Microsoft’s own descriptions, not independent rankings. The announcement described Spencer as having spent over 38 years at Microsoft, including 12 years leading Gaming.
What the investment statement does—and does not—promise
Nadella’s remarks signal that Microsoft intends to keep gaming as part of its business and consumer strategy. Windows Central’s account also quotes him describing a focus on preserving relationships with existing players: “We have to make sure that the friends we have today, are the friends that you have tomorrow.” He referred to console and PC players, as well as fans of Forza and Halo.

That is strategic reassurance, not a product plan. The remarks do not disclose:
- A dollar amount, budget, or schedule for future gaming investment.
- A release slate or guaranteed timetable for particular games.
- A commitment to a specific console or hardware launch.
- A policy on game exclusivity or which platforms will receive future releases.
Windows Central’s reporting describes Nadella as discussing where Microsoft can extend gaming beyond console play, not announcing that it is abandoning consoles. The comments support a broad commitment to serving existing console and PC audiences, but they do not settle how Microsoft will balance those audiences or what products it will prioritize.

Did Nadella say Xbox had a “blank check”?
No. Microsoft communications chief Frank Shaw disputed a circulating claim that Nadella had said Sharma had “a BLANK CHECK to revive Xbox and the trust of the fans, no matter the cost.” Windows Central reproduced Shaw’s response that this was not said; GameSpot also reported the denial. The “blank check” wording should not be attributed to Nadella.

The statements covered here do not announce a shutdown plan. Nadella publicly called Microsoft “long on gaming,” and the later internal-Q&A account says the company will continue investing. Those are indications of stated intent, not guarantees about every future Xbox product or business decision. The leadership transition has been reported amid questions about the company’s direction, but the remarks provide no detailed roadmap that would resolve those questions.
