Microsoft Edge now offers Copilot features that can summarize pages and PDFs, reason across open tabs, and—in a separate feature called Browse with Copilot—take actions on webpages. Access depends on whether you are a consumer or using Edge for Business; the business agentic-browsing feature is a limited preview, while Microsoft says consumer access is rolling out to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the United States. Microsoft’s announcements do not establish that a Copilot+ PC is required.

What Microsoft has added to Edge

Edge’s Copilot capabilities have expanded beyond answering questions about a page. Depending on the feature, account, device, and availability, Copilot can summarize webpages, videos, and PDFs; answer questions using browsing context; reason across multiple tabs; and interact with websites by clicking, scrolling, typing, or navigating.

Microsoft’s May 13, 2026 update says Copilot Mode is being retired as Microsoft brings Copilot experiences into Edge desktop and, for the first time, the Edge mobile app. The update lists multi-tab reasoning, answers informed by browsing history and past chats, Voice and Vision, Journeys, and desktop productivity tools. Availability and feature scope vary, so this is not a promise that every capability works on every device or account. Microsoft Edge Blog, May 13, 2026

The phrase “Copilot+” in the headline should not be read as a hardware requirement: the Microsoft sources describing these Edge features do not say that users need a Copilot+ PC. Access conditions instead refer to Microsoft 365 Premium for the consumer rollout and Microsoft 365 Copilot licensing for the business preview.

Browse with Copilot versus the business preview

These are distinct offerings, with different audiences, access conditions, and controls.

Area Browse with Copilot (consumer) Agentic browsing in Edge for Business
Audience Consumers using Edge Organizations using Edge for Business
Access Microsoft says rollout is to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the United States, with more markets to follow. Microsoft Support Limited preview for organizations with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license; available worldwide except the European Economic Area. Microsoft Edge Blog, May 20, 2026
Site access Microsoft documents safeguards and site controls, but the support guidance does not describe the same administrator-scoped designated-site model as the business preview. An administrator can enable the feature through policy and scope it to designated sites.
User oversight Users can see the agent’s activity and interrupt it or take control. Visual indicators show when the agent is active; users can pause or stop it.
Data protection context Do not assume enterprise data protections apply to every consumer Copilot interaction. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Copilot enterprise data protection keeps prompts, responses, and files within the tenant and that they are not used to train models.

How Browse with Copilot works

You give Copilot a task, and it interprets the request and may act in the current tab or open another tab in the same window. Microsoft says it can select elements, scroll, type, and navigate webpages. Prompts phrased as actions—such as “Open…”, “Find…”, “Book…”, or “Add…”—fit this interaction model. The agent’s steps are visible, and you can interrupt or take over. Microsoft Support: Browse with Copilot

This action-taking feature is separate from asking Copilot to explain what is already on screen. Edge’s Copilot support guide says it can summarize webpages, videos, and PDFs and answer questions using context such as the current page, page title, open tabs, and browser history, depending on the prompt. In Edge settings, you can turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web. See Getting started with Copilot in Microsoft Edge.

Privacy and administration: what differs

Consumer browsing context

Microsoft’s support documentation says Browse with Copilot is experimental and may use cookies, meaning it may be signed in to a site where you already have an active session. Microsoft also documents restrictions around autofill data, saved passwords, and wallet information, along with a consent dialog and controls for sites. Do not treat those safeguards as a reason to hand the feature sensitive information.

Enterprise context

Microsoft Learn says Copilot Chat in Edge may send relevant browsing context based on the user’s prompt and consent. If a user allows page information to be shared, Edge may send browsing context, the prompt, and previous conversation history. Microsoft says enterprise data protection applies to prompts and responses when a user is signed in with Microsoft Entra, and its documentation also describes DLP policy enforcement for Edge for Business. These statements concern the enterprise context described by Microsoft, not every consumer Copilot interaction. Microsoft Learn: Microsoft Copilot Chat in Edge

For the Edge for Business agentic-browsing preview, Microsoft says IT can restrict use to designated sites and retain Purview protections; users can pause or stop the agent. Those administrative controls are specific to the business preview described in Microsoft’s May 20, 2026 announcement.

Risks, limitations, and safer ways to use it

Microsoft warns that Browse with Copilot can misunderstand requests, make mistakes, or be influenced by malicious hidden instructions in a webpage—a risk commonly called prompt injection. Because the feature can take actions, an incorrect interpretation may have consequences beyond a wrong answer. Microsoft advises against using it for banking, stock trading, credit card details, personal identifiers, medical records, or highly confidential information. Microsoft Support

  • Remember that an active site session may be available through cookies; avoid workflows that expose sensitive account activity.
  • Use the visible controls to interrupt or stop the agent if it drifts from the task.

Microsoft’s October 23, 2025 security post about the earlier Actions in Edge preview described defense-in-depth measures including curated site access, SmartScreen, and checks for hidden instructions and task drift. That post provides security background, but its feature and preview details are from 2025 and should not be confused with the 2026 consumer Browse with Copilot experience or Edge for Business preview. Does Browse with Copilot work on every site?

Microsoft documents site-level controls and safeguards, but does not establish that every website is supported or that every task will succeed. Site design, access restrictions, sign-in state, and the agent’s interpretation can affect what it can do. Treat it as an assistant to supervise, not an unattended substitute for checking a website or completing sensitive transactions.
