Did Microsoft buy the company behind the Sidekick?
Yes. Microsoft announced its agreement to acquire Danger Inc. on February 11, 2008, and announced that the acquisition was complete on April 15, 2008. Microsoft’s completion announcement said the financial terms were not disclosed.
The two dates mark different events: February 11 was the announcement of an agreement; April 15 was the announcement that the acquisition had been completed. Microsoft’s acquisition history also lists Danger Inc. under February 11, 2008.
What Danger did—and how it connected to Sidekick

Microsoft’s announcement of the deal described its offerings as including real-time messaging, social networking, web browsing, and personal information management. Danger combined applications on the phone with hosted back-end services to provide a customizable mobile experience.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That explains the Sidekick connection more precisely than calling Danger a phone manufacturer. Microsoft’s July 2008 Sidekick announcement called the device “powered by Danger” and credited Danger’s software and services with helping bring it to life. The same release also mentions hardware customization; it does not say Danger alone manufactured the handset.
The July announcement listed features such as video capture and sharing, Bluetooth stereo music, messaging improvements, customizable web browsing, universal search, and removable shells. Those features help explain why Danger became closely associated with a recognizable consumer phone, even though its role extended beyond the physical device.

Why did Microsoft acquire Danger?
Microsoft said it wanted to strengthen its consumer mobile efforts by combining Danger’s experience with Microsoft’s mobile services. In the February announcement, Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division president Robbie Bach said: “The addition of Danger serves as a perfect complement to our existing software and services, and also strengthens our dedication to improving mobile experiences centered around individuals and what they like.”
When the deal was completed, Microsoft said Danger’s expertise would contribute to its Premium Mobile Experiences team within the Mobile Communications Business. Corporate vice president Roz Ho described the aspiration this way: “We imagine a mobile experience that embraces sharing and celebrating relationships and personal moments.” These statements document Microsoft’s intended strategy; they do not, by themselves, show whether the acquisition ultimately succeeded commercially.
