Microsoft usually asks for an alternate email address or phone number to verify that you are the account owner or to make account recovery possible. For a personal Microsoft account, the contact method only needs to be one you can access to receive a verification code; it does not have to be your primary email address. The exact reason depends on whether you are signing into a personal account, a work or school account, or signing up for Microsoft 365 for business.
What Microsoft means by “alternate email”
The phrase can describe different things. In a personal-account sign-in, it is usually a backup contact method used to verify your identity or help recover the account. In a Microsoft 365 business signup, it is a separate, non-work address where Microsoft can send important notices, such as administrator password-reset information.
First identify the account and screen you are using: a personal Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, or Microsoft account; a work or school account; or a Microsoft 365 business signup. The prompt’s wording and context matter because these cases have different purposes.

Microsoft needs to verify a sign-in
The personal-account message “Help us secure your account” means Microsoft wants additional information to check that the person signing in is the account owner. It may ask you to provide an email address or phone number, then enter a code sent to that method. Microsoft says the contact does not have to be your own email address or phone number; you need to be able to access it. Microsoft’s “Help us secure your account” guidance explains the process.

Microsoft wants you to confirm security information
A different notice, “Make sure you can receive a security code,” asks you to verify or add security information. Microsoft says it may ask occasionally, including after a long period without signing in. This notice can be skipped for 24 hours at a time, but after seven days from the first notice, you must verify or add security information before signing in again. Those time limits apply to this specific notice, not every alternate-email prompt. Microsoft’s verification-code troubleshooting guidance describes it.
Your organization may require another verification method
For work or school accounts, the prompt may reflect your organization’s sign-in policy. Microsoft describes “Let’s keep your account secure” as a request to add another way to verify your identity during sign-in. If this is a managed account, your organization’s administrator may be able to explain which methods are required. See Microsoft’s work or school account troubleshooting.

You are signing up for Microsoft 365 for business
This is separate from a personal account’s security check. Microsoft says business signup requires an alternate email that is not connected to the business service, so important messages—including administrator password-reset information—can reach you if Microsoft 365 is unavailable. Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 business signup instructions cover this requirement.
What to do when the prompt appears
- Confirm the account type and prompt. Determine whether this is a personal, work or school, or business-signup flow. Use the prompt wording to distinguish an identity check from a request to add security information.
- Make sure you are on a genuine Microsoft sign-in page. If the request arrived only in an unexpected email, do not follow its link or enter your password there. Go directly to Microsoft’s account site and check recent activity or security settings. Microsoft says it will never ask for your password by email; see its guidance on protecting an Outlook.com account.
- Choose a method you can access. For the personal “Help us secure your account” flow, use an accessible email address or phone number that can receive the code. It need not be your primary address.
- If the masked address or number looks unfamiliar, check the details. Verify that you have the right account and check the spelling and email domain. Microsoft’s code troubleshooting guidance recommends checking these details; if you still cannot identify or access the method, use account recovery.
- Add and verify a replacement before removing a method you can no longer use. Avoid changing all security information at once. Microsoft warns that replacing all security information can restrict the account for 30 days. If you have lost access to every method, select “I don’t have any of these” and follow the replacement process; Microsoft says it can involve a 30-day wait before you can sign in. See Microsoft’s security-information replacement instructions.
- If code requests are blocked, stop resending them. Unusual activity and excessive or repetitive requests can be associated with blocks. Try another verification method already connected to the account, or wait before trying again. Microsoft’s code troubleshooting page lists possible causes and steps.
Do you have to create a new email address?
No—not for the personal “Help us secure your account” check. Microsoft says the contact only needs to be accessible so you can receive and enter the code. A usable phone number is also an option in that flow. The prompt is asking for a verification route, not necessarily a new mailbox.

A security request shown during a sign-in you initiated is different from an unsolicited message claiming your account is at risk. Do not reply to an email asking for personal information or use its link to sign in. Instead, navigate directly to Microsoft’s account security or recent-activity page and review the account there. Microsoft states that it will never ask for your password in email.
