Office 2021 gives you a fixed set of apps for one upfront purchase; Microsoft 365 subscriptions add ongoing app updates and, depending on the plan, cloud services and features. Office 2021 does not include an upgrade to the next major Office release. Its support deadline is imminent: Microsoft’s consumer support page says October 13, 2026, while Microsoft Lifecycle lists October 14, 2026 using Pacific Time. The apps may continue to work after support ends, but Microsoft will stop providing technical support, bug fixes, and security fixes.
What you lose with Office 2021
The difference is more than paying once instead of renewing a subscription. Office 2021 is a fixed release: it receives security and quality updates during its support period, but does not get the ongoing feature additions associated with Microsoft 365 or an included upgrade to the next major version. Microsoft describes that distinction in its Office 2021 and Office LTSC FAQ.
One-time Office suites also exclude certain Microsoft 365 services and cloud-backed features. Microsoft names OneDrive, Exchange Online, and SharePoint Online as services not included with the one-time suite, and PowerPoint Designer and Excel Data Types as examples of cloud-backed features that are not included. This is not a complete feature-by-feature comparison for every Office edition and subscription plan. It also does not mean you cannot save an Office file to any cloud storage: the distinction is that these Microsoft 365 services and specified features are not bundled with the one-time license. - Microsoft 365 cloud services: OneDrive, Exchange Online, and SharePoint Online are not included as subscription services with Office 2021.

- Subscription support and storage described in Microsoft’s FAQ: The FAQ describes chat and phone support and 1 TB of OneDrive storage for the Microsoft 365 plans it covers. Check the specific plan’s current benefits; storage and included apps are not universal across every tier.
Office 2021 editions and Microsoft 365 plans do not include the same apps
Compare the actual edition and plan, not just the product names. Microsoft’s Office 2021 FAQ lists these desktop app lineups:

Microsoft’s FAQ describes Microsoft 365 subscription plans as offering premium apps and services, with use across PCs, Macs, iPads, iPhones, Android tablets, and Android phones. The exact apps, device terms, storage, and support depend on the named plan and can change. Verify those details on the current plan page before comparing it with a particular Office 2021 edition. A subscription should not be assumed to include every app on every device.
Device use and payment work differently
Office 2021 is a one-time purchase for a fixed app release, rather than a subscription that keeps the apps current. Microsoft’s comparison describes Microsoft 365 plans as supporting installation across a range of computer and mobile device types, while Office 2021 is sold as a one-time suite. Exact installation and activation allowances depend on the product terms, so check them for the edition or plan you intend to buy.

The trade-off is straightforward: a one-time license avoids a recurring subscription payment but does not include future major-version upgrades. Microsoft says that upgrading from a one-time purchase to the next major release requires buying that release separately. A Microsoft 365 subscription gives access to current app versions while the subscription is active, but its cost recurs. The cited product comparison does not establish current prices or a break-even point, so compare the actual current price and benefits for your region rather than relying on a generic savings calculation.

Office 2021 support ends in October 2026
As of October 4, 2026, Office 2021 is close to the end of support. Microsoft’s consumer-facing Office 2021 end-of-support page gives October 13, 2026. The Microsoft Lifecycle listing gives October 14, 2026 and says its displayed dates use Pacific Time. Use the date shown by the source relevant to your situation; the official pages differ by one day.

After support ends, Microsoft says it will stop technical support, bug fixes, and security fixes for Office 2021. It does not say the apps immediately stop launching: Microsoft’s support page states, “All of your Office 2021 apps may continue to function.” That is not a promise of future security or compatibility. If continued fixes and support matter to you, the approaching deadline is an important reason to plan a transition.

If you want a fixed-release suite rather than a subscription, Office Home 2024 is a newer one-time-purchase option. Microsoft describes it as a purchase for one PC or Mac and says it does not include an upgrade to the next major release. As with Office 2021, one-time suites do not include Microsoft 365 services or the specified cloud-backed features. That makes the choice about the release model, not simply whether to replace Office 2021 with the newest product. Office Home 2024 remains a fixed suite; Microsoft 365 is the subscription category for ongoing app versions and plan-dependent services. Confirm the current product terms, included apps, and price before choosing.

Which option fits your needs?
- Choose Microsoft 365 if ongoing app features, access to current versions, use across multiple device types, or included cloud services are priorities. Select a specific plan only after checking its current app and service entitlements.
- Consider Office Home 2024 if you prefer a one-time purchase and a fixed app set, and do not need the subscription services or continuing feature additions.
- Do not treat Office 2021 as supported indefinitely just because the apps may still function after October 2026. Support, security fixes, and bug fixes are scheduled to end.
