Meta and Alphabet are both spending heavily on computing infrastructure, but the available figures do not support a like-for-like stock verdict. Meta’s latest supplied release, for the quarter ended in 2026, shows $32.79 billion of operating cash flow against $34.91 billion of capital expenditures (including principal payments on finance leases), leaving reported free cash flow of negative $2.12 billion. The latest Alphabet figures available here are from Q2 2025: $27.747 billion of operating cash flow, $22.446 billion of property-and-equipment purchases and $5.301 billion of free cash flow. Those periods are more than a year apart, and the companies describe capital spending differently. The useful conclusion is narrower: AI-related infrastructure can absorb substantial cash before depreciation and monetization appear in reported results. A proper investment comparison needs matched periods, reconciled definitions, current Alphabet data and evidence that infrastructure is producing revenue and operating profit—not just management claims about AI.
What does the comparison show right now?
Meta’s disclosed cash generation is being pressured by an unusually large infrastructure build-out, while Alphabet’s supplied numbers still show positive free cash flow. That is a description of two snapshots, not evidence that one company is financially superior or that either stock is undervalued.
The timing problem is decisive. Meta’s figures are from Q3 2026, with a capital-expenditure outlook current to October 21, 2026. Alphabet’s latest supplied quarter is Q2 2025, and its approximately $85 billion 2025 capital-expenditure outlook is historical. Alphabet’s later-quarter results and current capex outlook are not established here, so placing the Q2 2025 figures beside Meta’s Q3 2026 figures as a scorecard would create a false comparison.

Operating cash flow (OCF) is cash produced by day-to-day operations before purchases of long-lived assets. Free cash flow (FCF) subtracts capital spending under each company’s stated reconciliation. A company can therefore report strong OCF while FCF falls sharply when it accelerates data-center, server or network investment.

Meta: Q3 2026 snapshot
| Metric | Meta Q3 2026 | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $64.60 billion | Quarterly revenue disclosed in Meta’s 2026 release. |
| Operating cash flow | $32.79 billion | Cash generated by operations before capital investment. |
| Capital expenditures | $34.91 billion | Includes principal payments on finance leases, according to Meta’s release. |
| Free cash flow | Negative $2.12 billion | Meta’s reported measure after the capital-expenditure deduction in its reconciliation. |
On Meta’s stated definition, capital spending exceeded quarterly operating cash flow by about $2.12 billion. That does not mean operations consumed cash: operations generated $32.79 billion. It means the quarter’s infrastructure and finance-lease investment was larger than the cash produced by operations during that period.
Meta: full-year 2025 context
| Metric | Meta FY2025 |
|---|---|
| Operating cash flow | $115.80 billion |
| Net cash used in investing activities | $102.00 billion |
| Purchases of property and equipment | $69.69 billion |
| Capital expenditures, including finance-lease principal payments | $72.22 billion |
| Free cash flow | $43.59 billion |
Net cash used in investing is broader than capital expenditures. Meta says its 2025 investing cash use included property and equipment for servers, data centers and network infrastructure, plus purchases of marketable and non-marketable securities. Those categories should not be treated as AI spending.
Meta’s 2025 filing projected $115–135 billion of 2026 capital expenditures. The company later raised that range to $135–145 billion in its Q3 2026 release, including principal payments on finance leases. The revised range is an outlook as of October 21, 2026, not a final annual result.
Alphabet: Q2 2025 snapshot
| Metric | Alphabet Q2 2025 | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Operating cash flow | $27.747 billion | Quarterly figure from Alphabet’s Q2 2025 results. |
| Purchases of property and equipment | $22.446 billion | Capital-spending line used in Alphabet’s free-cash-flow reconciliation. |
| Free cash flow | $5.301 billion | Alphabet’s reported reconciliation after property-and-equipment purchases. |
| Expected 2025 capital expenditures | Approximately $85 billion | Management outlook stated in the Q2 2025 release and call. |
Alphabet’s Q2 2025 numbers show positive FCF after the property-and-equipment deduction, but they cannot be annualized to represent 2025 or 2026 performance. They also cannot be compared directly with Meta’s Q3 2026 results without a common period and a careful adjustment for finance-lease treatment.
Why are Meta’s and Alphabet’s capital-expenditure measures not identical?
Meta’s release describes capital expenditures as including principal payments on finance leases. Alphabet’s cited FCF reconciliation subtracts purchases of property and equipment. A lease principal payment and a cash purchase both fund long-lived capacity, but they can appear in different lines and affect reported FCF differently.

For a defensible comparison, an analyst should record the exact definition beside every number, then reconcile finance-lease principal payments where the filings provide enough detail. Comparing Meta’s $34.91 billion definition with Alphabet’s $22.446 billion property-and-equipment line as though they were identical would overstate the precision of the result.
The same caution applies to “AI capex.” Neither company’s disclosed capital-expenditure total is an AI-only number. Servers, data centers and networks support advertising, search, cloud, messaging, video, storage, security and other existing services as well as generative-AI workloads.

How is Meta investing in AI and adjacent infrastructure?
Meta’s 2025 filing separates its Family of Apps from Reality Labs, but neither segment expense is an AI-capital-expenditure measure. Family of Apps costs and expenses were $96.29 billion in 2025; Reality Labs costs and expenses were $21.40 billion.
Family of Apps and infrastructure
The large property-and-equipment program primarily covers servers, data centers and network infrastructure. Those assets support recommendation systems, advertising delivery, content ranking, messaging and other products in addition to model training and inference. The filing does not provide a single dollar amount that isolates AI hardware from the rest of the infrastructure estate.
Reality Labs and foundational technology
Reality Labs work includes virtual- and augmented-reality devices, software, neural interfaces and other foundational technologies. Its reported segment expenses show the cost of pursuing those businesses, not the amount of AI capex or a realized return on the investment. Hardware, research and operating costs can coexist with AI work without being interchangeable accounting categories.

Management’s stated AI ambitions
In the Q3 2026 release, Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said: “We hit major milestones this quarter toward delivering personal superintelligence for everyone – including launching Muse and Muse Wonder, our first frontier model.” That statement characterizes product progress; it does not quantify revenue, margin or cash returns from the related spending.
Recommended Free Tools
In Meta’s Q2 2026 release, Zuckerberg said: “AI is accelerating our core business today, powering our next generation of products, and opening the door to entirely new enterprise opportunities.” Investors still need reported evidence—such as incremental revenue, lower costs or improved operating profit—to distinguish an opportunity from a monetized result.
How is Alphabet’s AI investment described?
Alphabet’s Q1 2025 filing describes technical-infrastructure investment as servers and network equipment, together with data-center land and building construction. In the Q2 2025 earnings call, management grouped its AI approach into infrastructure, research, models and tooling, and products and platforms.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said during that call: “Our AI infrastructure investments are crucial to meeting the growth in demand from Cloud customers.” This explains management’s rationale for spending and connects capacity to Google Cloud demand, but it is not independent proof that each dollar of infrastructure produces a particular return.
Alphabet also warned that depreciation would become a growing operating-cost consequence of past capital investment. Depreciation is non-cash in the period recorded, yet it reduces operating income and can pressure margins as servers and data centers enter service. The economic question is whether the resulting capacity supports enough additional, profitable revenue over its useful life.

What is the right way to compare investment efficiency?
Use matched periods and reconciled definitions before drawing conclusions. A practical comparison can follow these steps:
- Match the reporting window. Compare the same quarter or trailing-twelve-month period for both companies. Do not pair Meta Q3 2026 with Alphabet Q2 2025 in a ranking table.
- Capture OCF, capex and FCF together. OCF shows operating cash production; capex shows the cash committed to long-lived capacity; FCF shows what remains under the company’s definition.
- Normalize lease treatment. Note whether finance-lease principal payments are included in capex and whether the other company presents a comparable line.
- Separate infrastructure from other investing. Keep securities purchases and acquisitions out of an infrastructure-efficiency ratio unless the analysis explicitly intends to measure total investing cash use.
- Track the trajectory. Compare several quarters or years, not a single capex spike. Look for capacity growth, depreciation, operating expenses and the revenue that management says uses the new capacity.
- Test monetization in the relevant businesses. For Meta, examine advertising performance and any separately disclosed enterprise or device progress. For Alphabet, examine advertising and Google Cloud revenue and operating results. Management commentary is a lead, not a cash-return calculation.
Useful ratios—and their limits
Analysts often calculate capex as a percentage of revenue, FCF margin or OCF less capex. These ratios are useful only when the numerator and denominator cover the same period and accounting definition. A high capex-to-revenue ratio can reflect a deliberate expansion phase rather than weak economics; a low ratio can reflect capacity purchased in earlier years.
Do not infer a return on AI investment from one quarter’s FCF. Capacity may be installed before demand arrives, while depreciation begins after assets are placed in service. Conversely, strong FCF can coexist with underinvestment if a company is delaying necessary replacement or expansion.

Meta’s signal
Meta produced substantial operating cash in both the 2025 full year and Q3 2026, but the latest quarter’s infrastructure commitment was large enough to push reported FCF below zero. Its raised 2026 capex range signals that management expects the investment cycle to remain exceptionally intensive. The figures establish cash absorption and spending scale; they do not establish whether the spending will earn an adequate return.
Alphabet’s signal
Alphabet’s supplied Q2 2025 quarter retained positive FCF after property-and-equipment purchases, while management expected approximately $85 billion of capex for 2025. That snapshot suggests cash generation remained positive after investment at that time. It says nothing definitive about Alphabet’s 2026 spending, later depreciation or current demand, because those data are not included here.

Can these figures identify the better stock?
No. Cash flow is one part of an equity analysis. Valuation, dilution, debt and other liabilities, regulatory exposure, advertising concentration, cloud competition, product execution, AI-model economics and future cash generation all affect a stock’s potential outcome.
Even a company with higher FCF is not automatically the better investment: the market price may already discount strong growth, or the cash may be temporarily high because investment is deferred. Likewise, negative FCF during a build-out is not automatically destructive if the resulting assets generate durable, high-return revenue. The supplied figures support a fundamentals comparison, not a price target or expected-return estimate.
What should an investor monitor next?
- Period-matched Alphabet results: obtain the latest quarter and current capex guidance before making a head-to-head 2026 comparison.
- Capex delivery versus guidance: compare actual spending with Meta’s $135–145 billion 2026 outlook and Alphabet’s then-current guidance when disclosed.
- Operating-cash conversion: track whether revenue growth converts into OCF as infrastructure spending rises.
- Depreciation and margins: watch the lag between assets entering service, depreciation expense and operating-income growth.
- Customer and product demand: connect cloud consumption, advertising performance and paid products to the capacity being built.
- Definition changes: read each reconciliation for lease payments, property purchases and other items before comparing FCF.
- Balance-sheet capacity: include cash, debt, commitments and potential dilution rather than treating annual FCF as money available to shareholders without conditions.
What is the practical conclusion?
Meta’s latest disclosed quarter demonstrates how an AI-and-infrastructure build-out can make FCF negative even while OCF remains strongly positive. Alphabet’s older quarter shows positive FCF after property-and-equipment purchases, but its figures are too stale for a current comparison. Neither company discloses an AI-only capex total in the figures cited here, and management statements about demand or product progress are not realized cash returns. The sound method is to wait for matched Alphabet and Meta periods, normalize lease treatment, then test whether advertising, cloud and other businesses are turning infrastructure into incremental operating profit and cash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Meta’s negative Q3 2026 free cash flow mean its operations are losing money?
No. Meta reported $32.79 billion of operating cash flow in that quarter. The negative $2.12 billion free-cash-flow figure resulted from capital expenditures, including finance-lease principal payments, exceeding operating cash flow under Meta’s reconciliation.
Why can’t I compare the companies’ quarterly cash flow by simply dividing by four?
Cash flow and capital spending are seasonal and lumpy, especially when data-center purchases are timed around construction and equipment deliveries. Annualizing one quarter can therefore misstate both the run rate and the investment cycle.
Where would AI spending appear in the financial statements?
There is no single AI-spending line in the figures cited. AI work can be embedded in servers, networks, data centers, research, models, tooling, product development and operating expenses that also support non-AI services.
What evidence would show that the infrastructure is paying off?
Look for sustained growth in the businesses using the capacity, improving operating profit after depreciation and rising cash generation over multiple periods. A management statement about demand is useful context, but it does not replace those reported outcomes.
