Neither service can be named a clear privacy winner from the available policies. As of October 25, 2026, OpenAI says it may use consumer ChatGPT content to improve models unless you opt out for new conversations, while Meta says it trains Meta AI models on public Facebook and Instagram posts and on content people share in Meta AI chats. Meta says it does not use private messages with friends and family for training unless someone in the chat chooses to share them with Meta AI. These are different data categories and controls, not a like-for-like measure of what either company stores, reviews, or shares.
The practical difference is that OpenAI describes a consumer opt-out and Temporary Chats, alongside separate default terms for business services. The current sources establish Meta’s training data categories but do not provide a complete, current map of Meta AI controls across regions and product surfaces. This comparison reflects published policies and disclosures, not a finding about companies’ internal practices.
What is the main difference between Meta AI and ChatGPT’s data policies?
OpenAI’s consumer policy gives ChatGPT users a way to turn off model improvement for new conversations. Meta’s 2026 filing describes categories of information used to train Meta AI, including public Facebook and Instagram posts and content shared in Meta AI chats, while drawing a specific line around private messages with friends and family. The documents do not establish that either service is categorically more private: they address different data, controls, products, and contexts.

“Used to improve models” or “used for training” is only one part of privacy. It does not, by itself, tell you whether data is stored, reviewed for safety, made available to service providers, or handled under a separate retention rule. Compare each of those questions independently, and keep the product and region in view.

The table is a comparison of what the cited policy materials say, not a scorecard. A missing or differently scoped statement is not proof that a company does or does not perform a particular practice.
Does Meta AI use my chats to train its AI?
Meta says content shared in Meta AI chats—including photos and text—is used to train Meta AI models. Its 2026 SEC-filed disclosure separately says it does not use the content of private messages with friends and family to train its AIs unless the user or someone in the chat chooses to share those messages with Meta AI.
The distinction is about where you share something. A conversation you have with Meta AI is not the same category as a private message you exchange with a friend or family member. If you choose to bring a private message into an AI interaction, Meta’s stated exception applies. The filing establishes these categories, but it does not explain every control, retention rule, or workflow for every Meta AI surface and country.
What Meta identifies as training material
- Public Facebook and Instagram posts.
- Content shared in Meta AI chats, including text and photos.
- Private messages with friends and family only when someone in the chat chooses to share those messages with Meta AI, according to Meta’s stated limitation.
Do not read the private-message statement as a blanket promise about every form of processing, every kind of messaging content, or every situation in which a user interacts with Meta AI. It is specifically a statement about using that private-message content to train Meta’s AIs.
Does ChatGPT train on my conversations?
OpenAI says it may use content from individual services such as ChatGPT to improve its models. For consumer ChatGPT, you can disable model improvement for new conversations in Data Controls or submit a request through the Privacy Portal. OpenAI’s Help Center says, “After you opt out, we won’t use your new conversations to improve our models.”

The scope matters: the Help Center statement concerns new conversations after opting out. It should not be paraphrased as a guarantee that nothing you previously submitted will ever be used, or that conversations are not retained or reviewed for other purposes. OpenAI also says Temporary Chats are not used for model improvement while they are temporary. If you submit response feedback, the full conversation associated with that feedback may become eligible for model improvement.
What the ChatGPT opt-out does—and does not—say
- It addresses model improvement. The stated effect is that new conversations after opting out will not be used to improve models.
- It is not a storage switch. OpenAI’s separate deletion information says cleared chats are removed within 30 days, with exceptions; opting out and clearing a chat are different actions.
- Feedback can change eligibility. OpenAI says a conversation associated with submitted response feedback may be used for model improvement, even when the user has otherwise opted out.
- It is not a promise of zero access. OpenAI describes limited access by authorized personnel and trusted service providers for specified purposes, including safety, security, support, legal matters, or model improvement.
How do I stop ChatGPT from using my chats?
For consumer ChatGPT, use Data Controls to turn off model improvement, or make a request through OpenAI’s Privacy Portal. The published commitment applies to new conversations after you opt out; the available source does not establish that the setting retroactively changes the status of earlier conversations.

- Use the Privacy Portal if you prefer a privacy request. OpenAI’s Privacy Center describes portal choices and their scope; the setting and a formal request are available routes, not evidence that every data use stops.
- For a conversation you do not want treated as a normal chat, start a Temporary Chat. OpenAI says Temporary Chats are not used for model improvement while temporary. This does not make the feature a general guarantee that no processing or retention occurs.
- Avoid submitting feedback on a conversation you do not want considered for improvement. OpenAI says submitting feedback may make the full associated conversation eligible.
These steps concern consumer ChatGPT. They should not be applied automatically to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, or API content, which OpenAI says is not used for model improvement by default, subject to explicit opt-in or other agreements.
Does Meta AI have an opt-out or temporary-chat setting?
The sources available for this comparison do not establish a complete, current Meta AI control map for training, deletion, or temporary chats across countries and product surfaces. Meta’s 2026 filing identifies training data categories, but it is not a guide to every account setting. Do not assume either that Meta users have no control or that a particular opt-out or temporary-chat feature exists everywhere.
Meta’s US Regional Privacy Notice, effective May 23, 2025, addresses broad US privacy practices and rights; it is not a comprehensive Meta AI-specific control manual. Settings and rights can vary by geography and by whether you use Meta AI in a standalone experience or within another Meta product. Check the current controls shown for your own account and region rather than relying on an old menu path or a feature described for a different surface.

Are private messages with friends and family used to train Meta AI?
Meta’s 2026 filing says no, unless the user or someone in the chat chooses to share those messages with Meta AI. That statement is specifically about training Meta’s AIs; it does not establish that every other kind of processing, retention, or access is ruled out in every circumstance.
A practical implication is to distinguish a private exchange between people from material deliberately copied or sent into an AI interaction. If you share part of a message thread with Meta AI, the filing’s exception is relevant. The disclosure does not provide enough detail to infer additional rules for all message types, account settings, or regional versions.
How long does ChatGPT keep chats, and what happens when I clear one?
OpenAI’s consumer FAQ says cleared chats are deleted from its systems within 30 days. It gives two exceptions: content may already have been de-identified and disassociated from the user’s account, or retention may be required for security or legal reasons.
This 30-day period is a service policy duration, not a study result or a universal retention guarantee for every product. It applies to the stated clearing process, not to Meta AI, and it does not mean a chat disappears immediately when cleared. The sources in this comparison do not establish an equivalent Meta AI deletion period.

- Using a Temporary Chat affects the stated model-improvement treatment while the chat remains temporary.

Can employees, reviewers, or partners access AI conversations?
OpenAI says limited authorized personnel and trusted service providers may access content for specified purposes, including safety, security, support, legal matters, or model improvement. It describes access controls and need-to-know limits, and says it does not share chat content for marketing or advertising.
Meta’s explainer says it may share certain AI questions with trusted partners, such as search providers, to return relevant and current information. It also says automated systems and human review may be used to improve safety and performance. Those statements describe particular partner and review practices; they do not establish that every prompt is shared or reviewed.
Do not infer that a Meta AI prompt is used for advertising or ad targeting simply because Meta has broader advertising and privacy disclosures. The sources here do not directly say that a specific Meta AI prompt is used for ad targeting. Similarly, OpenAI’s statement about not sharing chat content for marketing or advertising is not the same as a promise that content is never accessed for the other stated purposes.

Yes. OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and its API is not used to improve models by default, subject to explicit opt-in or other agreements. That is a different default from the consumer-service policy allowing model improvement unless the user opts out for new conversations.

Which service is more private?
There is no supported overall winner. OpenAI provides a clearly described consumer opt-out for future model improvement and a Temporary Chat option, plus a stated deletion window for cleared chats. Meta’s filing gives a clear account of several training-data categories and a specific private-message limitation, while the current source set does not establish a complete Meta AI controls map.
Choose based on the data and control you care about, not on the assumption that “not used for training” means “not stored,” “not reviewed,” or “not shared.” The most useful comparison is the one tied to your actual use: consumer ChatGPT or a business plan, a direct AI conversation or a private exchange, and the controls available in your region and app.

This comparison is current to October 25, 2026, but the cited documents have different scopes and update dates. OpenAI’s consumer data FAQ and model-improvement article were marked updated about 23 days before that date. OpenAI’s US Privacy Policy says it was updated September 10, 2026. Meta’s 2026 SEC filing is the strongest current source here for the categories it says are used in AI training.
Meta’s “Privacy Matters: Meta’s Generative AI Features” explainer was published in 2023 and clarified on November 21, 2025. It is the basis for the stated partner-sharing and review details, but it is not a complete current policy or control guide. Meta’s US Regional Privacy Notice took effect May 23, 2025, and covers broad US privacy practices rather than a full Meta AI-specific control map. Policies can change, so check the current notice and account controls when a setting or legal right is important to your decision.
