Do I need Dolphin or Slippi for Melee mods?
You need the emulator or launcher specified by the mod; Slippi is a common Dolphin-based choice, not a universal requirement for every mod. Melee.tv points PC players to Slippi, and Project Slippi documents its supported game version, controller configuration, replays, and netplay behavior.
Mod instructions can narrow the choice. SSBM Nucleus uses Slippi Dolphin to test and launch builds, while LYLAT distributes a Melee build and lists related supported builds such as Akaneia, Beyond Melee, Midnight Melee, and 1.03. Do not assume that a mod supporting one build, launcher, or online feature will automatically support another.
Use the mod’s published setup instructions to determine whether it expects you to launch an existing build, apply a patch, or generate a new ISO. If the mod specifies a particular Dolphin-derived launcher, start there rather than substituting a different emulator version without confirmation.

The broadly supported target in the documented workflows is a clean, unmodified NTSC-U/J 1.02 Melee ISO. “Clean” means the original game image has not already been patched or altered; the mod tool can use it as its source.

Project Slippi states in its FAQ that it does not provide a Melee NTSC 1.02 ISO and cannot help users find one; users need to acquire their own. The practical setup is therefore to use a game image from your own copy, without relying on unauthorized download links.
Keep that vanilla ISO as a source file. SSBM Nucleus says it extracts data from the clean ISO and does not modify that source. Diet Melee’s instructions describe generating a new ISO rather than replacing the vanilla one. Preserving the original gives the launcher or patcher a known clean input and leaves it available if you need to rebuild a modded version.
Should I use a mod launcher or a patcher?
Choose the workflow the mod documents. A launcher can manage or start builds from a clean source image; a patcher may create a distinct modded ISO. Check compatibility, file handling, online support, and how you will manage updates before choosing a workflow.

Can I use a GameCube controller on PC?
Yes. A traditional GameCube controller can be used with a compatible PC adapter, and Melee.tv recommends favoring first-party Nintendo controllers over third-party controllers. Arcade-style controllers are another option for competitive play.
What adapter and setup should I use?

Do not overwrite the clean file just to save space without checking the mod’s instructions. Nucleus says it leaves the source ISO unchanged, and Diet Melee’s process creates a new ISO. That means you may need room for both the original and output at the same time, especially while a build is being generated.
Melee.tv recommends placing the Slippi installation and Melee ISO on the fastest available drive, such as an SSD or M.2 drive, for performance-sensitive setups.
