Spoilers for Maze Runner: The Death Cure below.
The film ends with WCKD’s Last City operation destroyed, but the Flare crisis is not magically solved. Thomas survives, Newt and Teresa do not, and the rescued Immunes reach a remote safe haven with one vial of the newly developed cure. The final scene is hopeful because the survivors are finally free to build a life without WCKD—not because the old world has been restored.
What happens at the end of The Death Cure?
After Newt’s death, Thomas returns to WCKD’s headquarters and confronts Ava Paige. Paige still believes that WCKD’s experiments are justified because the Immunes may provide the key to saving humanity from the Flare.
Before Thomas can settle the confrontation, Janson kills Paige. Janson has already been infected, and his interest in Thomas is personal: he wants Teresa to extract Thomas’s blood and use it to cure him. His plan is not to distribute a cure fairly. He intends to preserve himself and decide who else is worth saving.
Teresa finally rejects that plan. She frees Thomas and helps him escape through the collapsing WCKD complex. Thomas releases infected Cranks inside the facility, and they attack Janson. His death is therefore caused by the infected people he has spent the film trying to control.

Thomas and Teresa reach the roof, where the Berg—the series’ flying transport craft—is waiting. Teresa gives Thomas a vial of the cure and helps him aboard. The roof collapses before she can climb to safety, and she falls with the WCKD headquarters.
Thomas escapes with Minho, Gally, Brenda, Frypan, Jorge, and the other surviving Immunes. They reach a remote coastal safe haven, where the survivors can begin a new life away from WCKD and the infected cities.
In the closing scene, Thomas reads the pendant Newt gave him. It contains a farewell letter thanking Thomas for being his friend and asking him to look after the others. Newt’s death is final, but his request becomes Thomas’s reason to protect the surviving group.

Does Newt die?
Yes. Newt is dead, and the film does not leave room for a secret survival or a last-minute cure.
Newt has been infected with the Flare before the final rescue mission. As the infection progresses, he begins losing control and attacks Thomas. He asks Thomas to kill him before he fully turns into a Crank. Thomas refuses, but Newt eventually stabs himself in the chest.
Teresa later discovers that Thomas’s blood can be processed into a cure, but that information arrives too late. Thomas does not have a usable serum during the confrontation with Newt. The completed vial is created only after Teresa has access to Thomas’s blood and WCKD’s laboratory equipment.
This distinction matters: the film presents Thomas’s blood as the raw material for a treatment, not as an instant transfusion that Thomas could simply administer in the middle of a fight.

What is the “death cure”?
The death cure is a serum derived from Thomas’s blood. WCKD has been studying Immunes because their biology may contain a way to resist or reverse the Flare. Teresa’s research ultimately shows that Thomas’s blood has the necessary properties to produce a usable cure.
The film does not say that Thomas can cure everyone by donating blood directly. Teresa must extract and analyze the blood, then create a serum. The vial she hands Thomas proves that the process has worked at least once.

- Polish Release, cover may contain Polish text/markings. The disk DOES NOT have English audio and subtitles.
However, the ending stops before showing mass production. It does not establish how many doses can be made from Thomas’s blood, whether the cure can be reproduced indefinitely, or how it would be distributed across the infected population. The vial represents a genuine possibility, not the immediate end of the pandemic.
Why did Teresa help Thomas?
Teresa helps Thomas because she finally rejects WCKD’s method of saving humanity through coercion and selective sacrifice.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Earlier in the story, Teresa betrayed Thomas and the other Immunes by revealing their location to WCKD. She believed the organization’s research was humanity’s best chance against the Flare, even though that research involved imprisoning and experimenting on children and young adults. Her decision leads to Minho and the others being captured, so Thomas has good reason not to trust her.
Janson’s plan exposes the moral limit of WCKD’s approach. He wants Thomas’s blood so he can save himself and choose which people deserve treatment. Teresa realizes that the cure will become another tool of control if Janson gets it. She therefore turns against him, frees Thomas, and helps him reach the Berg.
Her final decision does not erase her earlier betrayal. The film treats it as an act of redemption rather than a cancellation of everything she did before. Teresa chooses to protect Thomas, and she dies during the escape when the headquarters collapses around her.
How does Teresa die?
Teresa dies when the roof of WCKD’s collapsing headquarters gives way. She helps Thomas onto the Berg and hands him the vial of cure, but there is not enough time for her to get aboard. The structure breaks apart, and she falls with it.
She is not shot by Thomas, killed by Janson, or shown being overcome by the Flare. Her death is the direct result of the collapsing WCKD facility after the assault on the Last City.
What does Newt’s letter mean?
Newt’s letter gives the ending its emotional resolution. His death leaves Thomas with guilt and grief, but the message also gives him a responsibility: protect the people who survived.
- Newt’s death remains final. The letter does not undo what happened or suggest that he was cured.
- Thomas’s priorities change. He is no longer focused only on escaping WCKD or rescuing one friend.
- The safe haven becomes a beginning. The survivors have a place to live, but rebuilding their lives is still ahead of them.
Thomas is not formally declared the leader of a new government. The movie shows something more personal: Newt trusts Thomas to look after the group, and Thomas accepts that obligation.
What happens to WCKD?
WCKD’s control of the Last City collapses during the final assault. Lawrence and the rebellion help breach the city, while infected people and rebels flood the area. The resulting chaos destroys the headquarters and ends WCKD’s central operation there.

Janson is later attacked by the Cranks. Teresa dies in the collapse. The film therefore removes the main figures who directed or enforced WCKD’s program.
That does not necessarily mean every WCKD employee or facility everywhere has been destroyed. The confirmed conclusion is narrower: WCKD loses its headquarters and its ability to control Thomas and the rescued Immunes.
Where do the survivors go?
The surviving group travels to a remote safe haven shown in the final beach sequence. It includes Thomas, Minho, Gally, Brenda, Frypan, Jorge, other surviving Gladers, members of the Right Arm, and Immunes rescued from WCKD.
The location is deliberately isolated from the cities and WCKD’s reach. It gives the survivors a protected place to live and start rebuilding. It is not presented as proof that the entire planet is safe.

- Some Immunes have escaped WCKD.
- Thomas has a vial of the Flare cure.
- The survivors have somewhere secure to begin again.
- The wider Flare outbreak remains unresolved on-screen.
Why is Thomas still holding the cure?
The movie ends before Thomas can distribute the serum because the final escape is about survival, not public treatment. Teresa gives him one vial as the WCKD complex collapses, and he carries it to the safe haven.
That does not make the cure useless. It confirms that Teresa’s research produced a real treatment. What remains unknown is how the survivors will reproduce it, how much Thomas’s blood is required, and whether they can manufacture enough doses for people outside their community.
The vial also has symbolic importance. WCKD tried to obtain the Immunes’ biological advantages by force. Thomas leaves with the result of that research, but outside WCKD’s control. The survivors now have the choice of what to do with it.
Film ending versus the novel
The movie changes several major details from James Dashner’s novel. The two endings should not be used interchangeably when explaining Newt’s death or the cure.

The ending’s definitive meaning
The Death Cure closes the trilogy’s main conflict without claiming that humanity has been completely saved. WCKD loses its headquarters, Thomas escapes, and a possible cure exists. But the world outside the safe haven is still damaged by the Flare, and the film never shows the treatment reaching everyone.
The personal conclusions are clearer:
- Newt is dead.
- Teresa is dead.
- Ava Paige and Janson are dead.
- Thomas survives.
- The rescued Immunes reach safety.
- Thomas carries a vial of the cure.
The final image is therefore bittersweet. Thomas has lost Newt and Teresa, but he has also escaped the system that treated people as laboratory material. Newt’s letter turns that escape into a responsibility: Thomas must help the survivors build something better, even though the future of the wider world is still unknown.
FAQ
Is Newt secretly alive at the end of The Death Cure?
No. Newt dies after stabbing himself during the confrontation with Thomas. He is not cured, and he does not appear among the survivors at the safe haven. His letter is a farewell message, not evidence that he survived.
Could Thomas have saved Newt with his blood?
Not immediately. The film shows that Teresa must process Thomas’s blood into a serum. Thomas does not possess that serum when Newt attacks him, and the finished cure is created too late to save Newt.
Does Teresa redeem herself?
Teresa takes a final step toward redemption by rejecting Janson’s plan, freeing Thomas, giving him the cure, and helping him escape. That choice does not erase her earlier betrayal, but it shows that she no longer accepts WCKD’s abusive method.
Is the Flare cured worldwide?
The film does not confirm that. It shows one vial of a working cure and a group of survivors reaching a safe haven. It does not show mass production or treatment of the wider infected population.
What happens to Janson?
Janson, who is already infected, tries to use Thomas’s blood to cure himself. Thomas releases infected Cranks inside WCKD, and they attack and kill Janson.
What does Newt ask Thomas to do in his letter?
Newt asks Thomas to look after the other survivors and thanks him for being his friend. The letter gives Thomas a personal responsibility as the group begins a new life.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Thomas escapes the collapsing WCKD headquarters with a vial of the Flare cure, while Teresa dies helping him and Newt remains permanently dead. The survivors reach a remote safe haven, but the film leaves the cure’s future distribution—and humanity’s complete recovery—unresolved.
