Learn parries and perfect dodges by studying one repeatable enemy attack, identifying the moment its wind-up becomes a committed strike, and making one deliberate defensive input. Do not assume that a parry, deflection, evade or “perfect dodge” works the same way in every Soulslike: an Elden Ring shield parry, a Sekiro deflection, a Wo Long deflect and a Nioh 3 evade have different cues, timing and rewards.
Start with a low-risk encounter, practice a single attack at a consistent distance, classify each miss as early, late or the wrong response, then add a second attack and finally a full combo. The method builds recognition rather than relying on a universal reaction-time number, because the publishers do not provide one reliable repetition count or frame window that applies across these games.
What is the fastest way to learn parrying and perfect dodges?
The most efficient routine is deliberate and narrow: isolate one move, watch it without attacking, choose one defense, press once, and adjust on the next attempt. A burst of panic inputs hides whether your timing was wrong, your spacing was wrong or the move cannot be answered by that defense.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose one repeatable encounter. Pick an enemy whose attack you can trigger consistently. Stand at roughly the same range for each attempt so the wind-up reaches you at a familiar pace.
- Watch before reacting. Spend an attempt observing the full animation. Note when the wind-up turns into a committed strike, whether the move is delayed, and whether it is one hit or the first part of a string.
- Select one response. Practice a parry, deflect or dodge separately. Do not alternate between a roll and a parry while you are still learning the cue.
- Press once. Make one intentional input and watch the result. Repeated presses can queue actions, especially in Elden Ring, and make a late roll look like a timing problem when it is actually buffered input.
- Label the miss. An early input happens before the strike is committed; a late input happens after the impact window; a wrong-defense miss means the attack required a different answer.
- Add complexity gradually. Once one move is reliable, add a second attack, then a delayed variant, then a short string. Return to the single move whenever your timing becomes uncertain.
This is a practice structure, not a promise that a fixed number of repetitions produces mastery. Treat every game’s terminology and timing as its own system.

How do attack cues differ between Soulslike games?
Read the attack animation rather than relying only on a warning symbol or a generic “last-second” rule. The cue that matters depends on the game and the defensive action you selected.
| Game and action | Input cue or practice aid | What success earns | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elden Ring shield parry | Watch the weapon-hand movement; Bandai Namco describes small shields as better suited to parrying than medium shields. | Can expose an enemy for a critical attack; some bosses require several successful parries. | No single frame window applies to every shield, enemy or patch. |
| Elden Ring dodge roll | Account for the enemy’s timing and your equipment load; the dodge includes invulnerability. | Damage avoidance when timed and positioned correctly. | It is not a parry, and Elden Ring’s load bands do not transfer to other games. |
| Sekiro deflection | Guard just before the blow lands. Hanbei provides single and consecutive-deflection drills. | Enemy Posture damage, possible counter-slash opportunities and eventually a Deathblow. | Perilous attacks do not all use the same response. |
| Wo Long deflect | Guard ordinary attacks while learning the pattern; watch for the brief glow associated with a red Critical Blow. | Restores your Spirit, damages the enemy’s Spirit and can create an opening. | A red Critical Blow cannot be handled by ordinary guard. |
| Nioh 3 Deflect and Evade | Deflect is a precisely timed Samurai-style guard; Evade is Ninja-style evasive movement. | Deflect recovers Ki and increases gauges; a successful Evade recovers Ki and replenishes gauges. | “Perfect dodge” is not a universal mechanic just because games use similar words. |
How do I practice an Elden Ring parry without panic inputs?
Use a small-shield parry against one readable weapon swing, watch the attacker’s hand, and press once as the strike commits. If you prefer rolling, practice that as a separate exercise and confirm that your equipment load gives you at least a medium roll.
Read the hand, not the start of the animation
Bandai Namco’s combat guidance points to the moment the enemy’s hand begins moving as a useful parry cue. The earliest part of a wind-up can be deceptive: an enemy may hold the pose, delay the hit or transition into another attack. Keep your eyes on the weapon hand and the direction of the swing rather than reacting to the first shoulder movement.
Use one shield and one attack while learning
Small shields are described by Bandai Namco as better for parrying than medium shields. Keep the equipment and encounter stable while learning so that an animation change does not create a second variable. Some bosses need multiple successful parries before a critical opening appears, so one success may be only the start of the punish sequence.
Stop Elden Ring from turning mashing into a queued roll
Elden Ring buffers actions. Repeatedly pressing dodge can queue a panic roll that executes into a charged attack. Make one press, watch whether the character moved before or after the hit, and change the next attempt rather than adding more inputs.
Check your equipment-load band before practicing dodges
Bandai Namco’s July 19, 2023 advanced-stats guide gives these Elden Ring thresholds:
| Equipment load | Roll category |
|---|---|
| 29.9% or less | Fast roll |
| 30%–69.9% | Normal roll |
| 70%–99.9% | Heavy roll |
| 100% or more | Over-encumbered |
These are Elden Ring gameplay values attributed to Bandai Namco Entertainment America in 2023, not measurements of learning speed. The publisher recommends at least a medium roll for ordinary dodge practice. Do not carry these percentages into another title.

How can I learn Sekiro deflections and perilous counters?
Sekiro rewards a guard press just before the blow lands. Begin with Hanbei the Undying, then separate ordinary strikes from thrusts and sweeps instead of treating every warning as a deflection prompt.
Start with Hanbei’s safe drills
Hanbei provides basic training without the risk of taking damage. His later exercises include consecutive-deflection practice and drills for perilous attacks. Use the single-deflection exercise to learn the sound and visual confirmation, then move to consecutive inputs only after one strike is readable.
Build Posture instead of dodging everything
A successful deflection damages an enemy’s Posture. Sustained attack-and-deflect pressure can lead to a counter-slash opportunity and, when Posture breaks, a Deathblow. Dodging every attack may keep you safe temporarily but does not train the central exchange that Sekiro expects.
Separate thrusts, sweeps and grabs
Mikiri Counter is a learned response to a thrust, timed as the thrust lands. A mistimed counter sends you into the attack. Sweeps and grabs need different answers, so identify the animation that follows the perilous warning before selecting a response. A warning symbol tells you that an exceptional attack is coming; it does not by itself tell you which counter to use.
After Hanbei’s drills, return to a real enemy and practice one ordinary strike, one thrust and one sweep as three separate lessons. Only combine them after each response is recognizable in isolation.
Optional printed reference for later bosses
Readers who want a physical lookup reference can search for the Sekiro Shadows Die Twice Official Game Guide Future Press. Activision describes that guide as containing detailed boss strategies, attack tables and combat-mechanics discussion. A book can organize information for review, but it does not replace observing the attack in your own encounter.
How should I practice Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty deflects?
Use ordinary guarding while you learn an enemy’s normal pattern, then switch to a deflect when the attack is a red Critical Blow. Team Ninja advises pressing slightly earlier when learning a deflect; that advice is specific to Wo Long and is not a universal Soulslike rule.

Guard ordinary attacks while studying
Team Ninja’s demo strategy tips recommend guarding ordinary attacks as you learn their sequence. Guarding lets you observe the order and spacing of hits without demanding perfect timing on every attempt. Once the pattern is familiar, practice the deflect against one chosen strike.

Recognize the red Critical Blow
A brief glow accompanies a red Critical Blow. Ordinary guard cannot stop it normally, so a successful deflect is required. A correct deflect restores your Spirit, damages the enemy’s Spirit and may create an opening for pressure.
Adjust timing deliberately
Team Ninja’s February 24, 2023 tips state: “If you press the button a little earlier, you will be more likely to succeed.” Apply that sentence only to the Wo Long context in which it was published. If a deflect fails, keep the enemy, range and attack constant and move the input slightly earlier on the next attempt instead of changing several variables at once.
What do Deflect and Evade mean in Nioh 3?
Nioh 3 distinguishes two defensive styles rather than using “perfect dodge” as a catch-all. Deflect is a precisely timed Samurai-style guard; Evade is Ninja-style evasive movement.
Samurai-style Deflect
A successful Deflect recovers Ki and increases gauges. Practice it against a single predictable hit and observe whether the enemy’s recovery gives you a safe turn to attack. The timing is tied to the Deflect action, not to a dodge-roll rule borrowed from another title.

A successful Evade also recovers Ki and replenishes gauges. Because it is an evasive movement, your positioning after the attack matters as much as avoiding the hit. Practice the same attack from the same range until you can tell whether you escaped by timing, by moving out of range or by both.
Keep the two lessons separate
Do not alternate Deflect and Evade during the first attempts. Their rewards and movement differ, and switching responses makes it difficult to diagnose an early input, a late input or a spacing error.

Why do I keep parrying too early?
Early parries usually react to the beginning of a wind-up rather than the committed strike. The fix is to identify a later visual event—such as the hand beginning its forward movement in Elden Ring or the moment immediately before impact in Sekiro—and delay one deliberate input.
- Freeze the distance. A closer or farther starting position changes when the same animation reaches you.
- Watch the striking limb. Ignore dramatic shoulder or weapon poses that can be held before the hit.
- Test one later attempt. Move the input later without changing your shield, stance or target.
- Check for a delayed hit. Some attacks pause after the apparent wind-up; wait for the actual commitment.
If a later attempt still fails, consider that the attack may require a dodge, a special counter or no response until a subsequent hit.

Replace repeated dodge presses with a single planned input and a pause to observe the result. In Elden Ring, buffered actions can turn multiple presses into a roll that occurs after the attack’s safe moment.
- Watch the enemy complete one attack without touching dodge.
- Choose the exact hit you intend to evade.
- Press dodge once as that hit approaches.
- Do not press again until the character’s movement and the enemy’s recovery are visible.
- If the roll was early, wait longer; if it was late, press earlier; if it was interrupted by a queued action, reduce the number of inputs.
Practice rolling separately from parrying. A roll’s invulnerability and a parry’s active window are different mechanics, so success with one does not calibrate the other.
Should I parry or dodge an attack?
Choose the defense that the named game rewards for that attack and that you can identify consistently. Parry or deflect when the system offers a meaningful posture, Spirit, Ki or critical-opening benefit and the cue is readable; dodge when the attack is not a valid parry target, when spacing is safer or when you are still learning the animation.
- Use an Elden Ring parry for a compatible weapon swing when you are deliberately pursuing a critical opening. Use a roll when you need damage avoidance and your equipment load supports the intended roll category.
- Use a Sekiro deflection for ordinary blows to build Posture. Switch to Mikiri for a thrust and another response for a sweep or grab.
- Use a Wo Long deflect for a red Critical Blow. Guard ordinary attacks while learning their pattern.
- Use Nioh 3 Deflect or Evade according to the style you are practicing; they have distinct Ki and gauge rewards.
Do not force a parry because a game uses the word “perfect.” Confirm what the particular attack accepts and what a successful defense actually gives you.
How do I progress from one attack to a full combo?
Increase only one source of complexity at a time. A reliable progression is single hit, second hit, delayed hit, then string.

What changed for Elden Ring parries in patch 1.17?
Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring patch 1.17 notes, dated August 27, 2026, report improved Parry performance and shorter post-activation recovery for daggers, curved swords and small shields. The notes do not establish a universal frame count, and the date does not prove that 1.17 is the latest patch.
Use the patch information as a version qualifier: if your Elden Ring build differs, the feel of a specific weapon may differ too. Recalibrate with the same single-attack exercise after an update rather than importing timing from an older video or from another shield category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat mistakes make practice ineffective?
- Mashing: multiple inputs conceal the cause of a miss and can queue actions.
- Changing equipment every attempt: altered animations and load categories add variables before the cue is learned.
- Practicing only the warning: a perilous or glowing indicator does not identify the exact counter in every game.
- Assuming every attack is parryable: some attacks require a dodge, a special counter or a different defensive state.
- Mixing games mentally: an Elden Ring roll threshold, Sekiro deflection cue, Wo Long Critical Blow and Nioh 3 Evade cannot be treated as one shared mechanic.
- Chasing a magic number: official materials do not publish a universal attempt count, millisecond improvement or success rate for mastering these skills.
How was this practice method selected?
The method prioritizes cues and drills explicitly described by the games’ publishers, then applies the same diagnostic structure across titles without pretending their mechanics are identical.
- It starts with a repeatable attack and consistent distance because timing cannot be diagnosed when the setup changes every attempt.
- It uses one input at a time because buffered or repeated actions obscure early, late and wrong-defense errors.
- It favors in-game training aids such as Hanbei’s drills and Wo Long’s guard-first learning advice.
- It reports rewards—critical openings, Posture, Spirit, Ki and gauges—only for the game that defines them.
- It treats version notes and equipment thresholds as dated, game-specific information rather than universal timing laws.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many attempts does it take to master a parry?
There is no reliable universal attempt count, reaction-time improvement or success percentage published for Soulslike parries and dodges. Stop counting repetitions and judge whether you can identify the same cue and make the same single input consistently.
Can I use Elden Ring roll percentages in another Soulslike?
No. The 29.9%, 30%–69.9%, 70%–99.9% and 100% equipment-load bands are Elden Ring values attributed to Bandai Namco’s 2023 advanced-stats guide. Other games may use different categories or no equivalent thresholds.
Does a perilous or glowing warning always mean I should parry?
No. In Sekiro, a perilous warning can precede a thrust, sweep or grab, each requiring a different response. In Wo Long, the red Critical Blow requires a deflect, while ordinary attacks can be guarded during practice.
