What carries over in Mass Effect Legendary Edition?

It helps to separate four questions that often get bundled together: whether a story career can pass to the next game, whether an old save file can be read by a remaster, whether a save can move between console generations, and whether a particular DLC item is included or immediately available. A yes to one does not imply a yes to the others. For example, the trilogy’s story imports are built into the game-to-game progression, but that says nothing by itself about moving a PS4 save to PS5 or importing an original ME1 PC file.
EA describes the trilogy’s design with the line, “Your choices seamlessly travel from one game to the next.” Its feature article also clarifies the file distinction: “Saves are still unique to each game and can be managed independently of each other.” Read together, those statements mean that the intended continuity is about the story and career information the next entry reads—not one universal save that all three games share.

An original Mass Effect save might have been used to start the original Mass Effect 2; that is not the same thing as importing the original Mass Effect file directly into Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
