Mass Effect 3 has the hardest narrative job: it must bring the Reaper war, political conflicts, and character arcs established over the trilogy toward resolution. Its strength is cumulative. Earlier relationships and decisions give reunions and later conflicts more weight than they would have in a standalone story. Andromeda offers a different form of agency. Its official manual says decisions affect how the story unfolds, how others think of Ryder, and mission success. It also lets players shape Ryder’s dialogue through tones labeled Emotional, Logical, Casual, Professional, and sometimes Impulsive. This gives Ryder more moment-to-moment personality flexibility than the original Paragon/Renegade framing, even though the available data does not support a claim that its long-range story branches more dramatically than the trilogy.

Play the trilogy in order: Mass Effect → Mass Effect 2 → Mass Effect 3. The first game establishes the world and decisions; the second builds the crew and personal stakes; the third draws on what came before. BioWare lists the Legendary Edition trilogy and Mass Effect: Andromeda as distinct releases, so do not expect Andromeda to continue Shepard’s story.
The original game has more dated combat, pacing, planetary exploration, and companion development than the sequels. The Legendary Edition improves presentation and usability, but it does not make the first entry play exactly like the more fluid action-RPGs that follow. Professional assessments differ: one retrospective credits the game’s more nuanced companion writing, loyalty missions, exploration, and subtler consequences, while a ranking piece is more critical of uneven writing, open-world content that can feel empty, and companions that leave less of an impression than the trilogy’s standouts. The fair conclusion is not that every player will dislike it, but that its strengths are less aligned with readers looking for the tightest story or the most consequential long-term character arcs.
BioWare said in August 2017 that update 1.10 was the game’s final update and that no further single-player or in-game story-content patches were planned. That is historical support information, not a reason by itself to avoid the game; it does mean you should not expect those planned categories of future story-content updates.
