Spoilers for all three games. In Mass Effect 3, the finale is decided at the Crucible after Shepard meets the Catalyst. Earlier choices almost never select a color directly; they determine Effective Military Strength (EMS), which controls the available choices and how badly the blast damages the galaxy. In Legendary Edition, 6,200 EMS unlocks Synthesis, while 7,400 or more unlocks every option and the high-EMS Destroy scene in which Shepard can be seen breathing. Destroy eliminates the Reapers and all synthetic life, Control turns Shepard into the Reapers’ governing intelligence, Synthesis merges organic and synthetic life, and Refusal lets the cycle continue. The Collector Base decision in Mass Effect 2 is the one earlier binary that can remove a color at very low EMS.

What actually determines which ending appears?
Shepard reaches the Citadel, confronts the Illusive Man and Anderson, then speaks with the Catalyst, the child-shaped intelligence that controls the Reapers. The Crucible is not a menu of endings chosen by individual loyalty missions. It is a galaxy-wide energy device whose available outputs are governed mainly by EMS.
IGN counts nine permutations: four Destroy variants, three Control variants, one Synthesis variant and hidden Refusal. Screen Rant counts five by grouping the Destroy and Control variations into their core choices, then adding the high-EMS Destroy stinger and Refusal. These are two ways of counting the same decision tree, not conflicting lore.
- EMS: the primary variable. It controls which colors appear and the damage shown in the Earth, relay, Normandy and Shepard epilogues.
- Collector Base choice: at very low EMS, destroying the base leaves only Destroy; sparing it leaves only Control.
- Shepard’s dominant morality: changes the wording and attitude of Control’s narration.
- Anderson’s fate: affected Shepard’s survival threshold in the original releases. Legendary Edition no longer uses that fork for the breathing scene.
How do EMS and War Assets work in Legendary Edition?
War Assets are the fleets, soldiers, technology and resources gathered across the trilogy. Their sum is Total Military Strength (TMS). In Legendary Edition, Galactic Readiness was removed, so the number shown at the War Terminal in the Normandy War Room is the effective number used by the ending chart.

Check the War Terminal before the point of no return in Act 3. Ending availability is locked during Admiral Hackett’s conversation immediately before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. Assets earned after that conversation—including the Collector Base asset—cannot add a new color. If the number changed after the lock, restart Priority: Cerberus Headquarters, not the Catalyst scene. To replay only the final choice after viewing an ending, turn Autosave off after the Catalyst conversation.

The 7,400 line is the published Legendary Edition threshold cited by IGN and Screen Rant. RPG Site suggests 7,800 as a conservative buffer in case final-mission events reduce the score; it is not a second official IGN band.
What the Collector Base changes
At the lowest Legendary Edition band, destroying the Mass Effect 2 Collector Base produces a Reaper-human-heart corridor on Priority: Cerberus Headquarters and permits only Destroy. Sparing it produces a Reaper-human-brain corridor and permits only Control. Once EMS reaches 3,200, both colors are available. Between 3,200 and 5,199, the matching base decision also slightly reduces the damage shown: Destroy aligns with a destroyed base and Control with a spared base.

How did the original 2012 versions calculate the finale?
Legendary Edition’s raw numbers should not be mixed with guides written for the original game. The 2012 release used Galactic Readiness: it began at 50 percent by default and could be raised through multiplayer, Mass Effect Infiltrator, the Datapad app or N7 HQ. EMS was TMS multiplied by Readiness; 400 TMS at 50 percent readiness therefore produced 200 EMS.

Refusal does not exist in the 1.00 release. Extended Cut, which is bundled with Legendary Edition, added Refusal, longer epilogues and clearer consequences.
How do you physically trigger each finale?
After the Catalyst explains the options, Shepard can walk to a beam or reject the premise. The controls below describe Extended Cut and Legendary Edition.
- Destroy (red): take the path on the right and shoot the Power Conduit with the pistol four times.
- Control (blue): take the path on the left and approach the two electric handles. The scene triggers when Shepard gets close.
- Synthesis (green): walk into or dive through the central white Crucible beam between the other paths.
- Refusal: choose “I reject these choices!” and then “You are wrong,” or skip the speech and shoot the Catalyst. The Catalyst responds, “So be it,” and the cycle continues.
What happens in the Destroy ending?
Destroy sends a red Crucible wave through the galaxy. It eliminates the Reapers and every other synthetic life-form caught by the signal, including the Geth if they survived Rannoch and EDI. Shepard’s cybernetics are also part synthetic, which is why the Catalyst warns that Shepard is normally lost.

Extended Cut’s Destroy narration comes from Admiral Hackett. Its emotional promise is the clearest: the Reapers are gone and the original mission is complete. Its moral cost is equally clear if Shepard saved EDI or brokered peace between the Geth and Quarians—the same blast destroys those synthetic allies.
What happens in the Control ending?
Control dissolves Shepard’s physical form and transfers Shepard’s memories and personality into the Reaper network. Shepard becomes the intelligence directing the Reapers, so the human body does not survive. The Reapers withdraw and help repair the relays and the wider galaxy in the Extended Cut epilogue. Geth and EDI live.
Paragon-dominant Shepard speaks as an altruistic guardian of the many. A mixed morality line changes “save the many” to “protect the many.” Renegade-dominant Shepard describes an army of the strong that destroys threats. The structure resembles the Illusive Man’s plan, but without his indoctrinated loss of control. The Catalyst says the Illusive Man could never have taken control because the Reapers already controlled him.

What happens in the Synthesis ending?
Synthesis is available at 6,200 EMS in Legendary Edition and at 2,800 in both the original Extended Cut and the 1.00 chart. Shepard adds their energy to the Crucible, combining organic and synthetic life into a shared framework described as new DNA.
EDI narrates the result: organics and synthetics understand one another, the Reapers stop harvesting and share their knowledge, and the galaxy rebuilds. Earth is not destroyed by the wave; in Extended Cut, the Citadel and relays are damaged but remain intact. Joker, EDI and the favored squadmate leave the Normandy, while Shepard dies in the beam.
The central objection is consent. Every organism in the galaxy is changed without being asked. The Catalyst calls Synthesis an ideal solution, but Shepard may already have proved that coexistence is possible by brokering peace between the Geth and Quarians. Claims that the ending specifically saves the Krogan or suit-bound species are interpretations rather than published BioWare statistics.
What happens in Refusal?
Refusal is the hidden fourth choice added by Extended Cut. Shepard rejects the Catalyst’s three proposals or shoots it, and the Reapers complete the harvest of the current cycle. Liara’s time capsule and beacon survive, allowing a later civilization to learn from this failure.

How do Mass Effect 1 choices feed the finale?
Most early decisions do not choose a beam. They determine which people, fleets and political blocs become War Assets and which epilogue slides are possible.
The Council and the Destiny Ascension
Saving the Council gives humanity a Council seat held by Anderson or Udina and avoids the resentment caused by sacrificing the other species’ leaders. Sacrificing the Council lets the Alliance concentrate on Sovereign but leaves the other races hostile. Anderson versus Udina has little practical effect beyond who appears as the human representative; if the first game is skipped, the default world state has the Council dead.
The Rachni Queen
In Mass Effect 3, the Reapers field rachni whether the original Queen was spared or killed. Destroying the Queen or killing the indoctrinated Breeder yields Aralakh Company worth 25 points. Sparing the true Queen removes those 25 points but adds Rachni Workers worth 100 points that do not betray the Alliance. Sparing the Breeder temporarily grants both groups, then removes 100 points when it betrays the fleet. Sparing the original Queen is therefore the strongest long-term asset result. Grunt survives the Utukku mission only if his Mass Effect 2 loyalty mission was completed.

Wrex, the Virmire survivor and smaller reputation forks
Wrex can be talked down on Virmire with eight Charm points or the completed Family Armor assignment. A living Wrex leads the Krogan in Mass Effect 3 and cannot be deceived during the genophage decision; Wreav can. Ashley or Kaidan remains alive to become a later squadmate and War Asset. Feros, Balak, Saren’s persuasion check and other smaller choices create additional reputation and asset ripples. Saren requires 12 Charm or Intimidate points, or nine if the Virmire investigation persuasion line was used.
How do Mass Effect 2 choices feed the finale?
Surviving the Suicide Mission
Squadmates who die in the Suicide Mission cannot return as Mass Effect 3 War Assets or participate in the Rannoch peace. The Silaris Armor, Thanix Cannon and Cyclonic Shields each prevent a death caused by the corresponding missing upgrade. A loyal escort survives, and Tali or Legion should not be assigned as the suicide-mission squad leader. If everyone dies, Shepard dies in Mass Effect 2 and there is no imported Shepard for the third game.
Legion, Tali and the Rannoch peace conditions
Activate Legion rather than selling it to Cerberus, keep Legion loyal, keep Tali alive, and complete Rannoch: Geth Fighter Squadrons. The hidden peace score needs at least five points: acquitting Tali gives two, destroying the Geth Heretics gives two, a Charm or Intimidate response during the ship argument gives one, completing Admiral Koris’s mission gives one and saving Koris gives one. At Priority: Rannoch, the fleet-rally option also requires at least 75 percent Paragon or Renegade reputation.
If peace fails, uploading the Reaper code preserves the Geth but destroys the Quarian fleet and costs Tali or Admiral Raan. Stopping the upload preserves the Migrant Fleet but kills the Geth and Legion. Peace grants both fleets, although Legion still dies while completing the upload. It is the largest ethics-driven War Asset gain and makes Destroy’s later loss of the Geth especially consequential.
Other character decisions
Keeping Maelon’s data improves Eve’s survival odds. Grunt’s loyalty protects him during the rachni mission. Miranda, Jack, Samara, Morinth, Thane and Zaeed choices determine whether those characters can appear or contribute later. Their exact asset values vary by state; the important rule is that a dead or unavailable character cannot supply a later asset.

Which Mass Effect 3 choices move EMS the most?
The genophage on Tuchanka
When Wrex leads, Shepard cannot quietly sabotage a genuine cure. Curing the genophage requires Mordin to disperse the cure and costs salarian Dalatrass support, but gains Krogan support. Killing Mordin prevents the cure and removes the scientific asset. When Wreav leads and Eve is dead, Shepard can persuade Mordin to fake the cure, preserving Krogan and salarian support while keeping Mordin as a Crucible scientist asset. The political and EMS consequences are among the largest in the game.
Rannoch
The Geth–Quarian outcome affects both the War Asset total and the meaning of Destroy. Peace provides both fleets. Choosing one side preserves only that side’s assets, and Destroy later kills any surviving Geth regardless.
Side missions, scanning and downloadable content
Planet scanning, side missions and the Leviathan, Omega, Citadel and From Ashes content fill the gap between the two-color bands and the highest band. Leviathan also identifies the Leviathans as the Catalyst’s creators. Completing Rannoch: Geth Fighter Squadrons adds a Geth Prime Platoon worth 60 TMS.

- Play or import a complete trilogy save when possible. A full import preserves more surviving characters and major political assets than a fresh start.
- Keep the Suicide Mission survivors alive with the Normandy upgrades and correct assignments.
- Preserve Wrex, Eve, Legion and Tali where possible, and pursue the Geth–Quarian peace conditions.
- Choose the original Rachni Queen rather than the Breeder when the mission forces the choice.
- Complete high-value side missions, scanning and downloadable-content missions before the Act 3 lock.
- Open the War Terminal and confirm the top Legendary Edition band before speaking to Hackett before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters.
- After the Catalyst scene, select Destroy and perform the right-hand conduit action for the Shepard-breath epilogue.
Do not reload only the final beam if the War Terminal was below the needed band. The ending state was already fixed at the Cronos Station preparation conversation.
Which ending should you choose?
There is no official best ending. The choice depends on which cost fits the Shepard you played.
- Choose Destroy if eliminating the Reapers is non-negotiable and Shepard’s possible survival matters more than preserving synthetic allies. It is the only path with a living Shepard scene.
- Choose Control if Shepard’s willingness to sacrifice their body for long-term guardianship fits the character. It saves EDI and the Geth but places unimaginable power in one Shepard-derived intelligence.
- Choose Synthesis if a universal organic–synthetic transformation seems preferable to continued conflict. It offers the most harmonious epilogue but imposes a permanent change without consent.
- Choose Refusal only if rejecting the Catalyst’s framework is more important than winning this cycle. It is a deliberate failure state, not a hidden survival route.
Destroy is popular because it completes Shepard’s original mission and can preserve Shepard. Control resembles the Illusive Man’s desired solution. Synthesis is the Catalyst’s preferred philosophy. None is objectively correct, and each contradicts some of the trilogy’s relationships or ideals.
Why did the endings seem to look the same?
The 2012 finale compressed years of decisions into a few colored beams and short scenes, so many players felt the trilogy’s choices were not represented. Extended Cut did not create separate gameplay finales for every romance, species or political decision. Instead, it added Refusal, longer narration, clearer relay and Earth damage, and epilogue slides that name more of the surviving or lost factions.
The last action is still one of three beams—or refusal—but EMS changes the surrounding consequences. The same red beam can show a repaired galaxy and a breathing Shepard, a damaged Earth with a surviving Normandy crew, or total devastation when the military score is low.

Is there a canon Mass Effect 3 ending?
No official BioWare or Electronic Arts source identified a canon color. RPG Site and TheGamer have read early future-game imagery as evidence for Destroy: Liara appears older, there is no visible green glow and Reaper or Geth wreckage suggests the synthetic life was destroyed. That is trailer interpretation, not a studio declaration.
In October 2026, Kotaku reported that EA had shut down BioWare and cancelled Mass Effect: Universe. A separately corroborated but unverified leak claimed that the project would have been set 600 years after Mass Effect 3 and would not choose a canon color, instead letting all three outcomes converge over time. Kotaku also quoted Dragon Age: The Veilguard creative director John Epler’s 2024 philosophy that the studio tries to avoid a single canon and does not want to invalidate player choices. That statement is not an official Mass Effect 3 ruling. Amazon’s planned live-action adaptation has likewise not been assigned an ending by any source cited here.
What does the Collector Base choice mean for a new playthrough?
If you begin Mass Effect 3 without a Mass Effect 2 save, the default Genesis 2 state treats the Collector Base as destroyed, which favors Destroy only in the lowest EMS band. Raising EMS above that band makes the old base decision irrelevant to color availability, although it can still alter the damage variation in the next two bands.

Can I change the available colors after I reach the Catalyst?

Does my romance create a different ending movie?
No romance receives its own Crucible beam or separate gameplay finale. Romance and squadmate survival can change who appears in the memorial and epilogue scenes, including whether a love interest adds Shepard’s name.
Why do guides disagree about the number of endings?
They count at different levels. One count treats each EMS and morality variation as a separate permutation, while another counts Destroy, Control and Synthesis as three core endings, then adds Refusal and the Shepard-breath variation.
Is 7,800 EMS mandatory for the Legendary Edition breathing scene?
No. IGN’s Legendary Edition chart and Screen Rant’s player target place the scene at 7,400 or higher. RPG Site’s 7,800 figure is a conservative buffer against score losses during the final missions, not a separate published threshold.
What happens if I refuse the Catalyst but have a very high military score?
Refusal ignores the EMS bands. The Reapers still harvest the current cycle, while Liara’s beacon gives a future civilization the information needed to try again.
