Masad Stealer is a Windows information-stealing trojan described in 2019 reporting as related to Qulab. It collected information such as browser credentials, cookies, financial and cryptocurrency data, and files, then sent compressed data to operators through Telegram infrastructure. The reports document historical behavior; they do not establish whether Masad campaigns or infrastructure remain active today.

What is Masad Stealer?

In an October 2019 alert, NHS England Digital described Masad as a Windows trojan believed to be based on older Qulab malware. At that time, the alert said it had been observed disguised as legitimate software on third-party sites. That is a historical distribution observation, not evidence of current circulation. NHS England Digital’s Masad Stealer advisory

BleepingComputer reported in September 2019 that Juniper researchers identified samples built from AutoIt scripts and compiled as Windows executables. The report also described distribution through bundled third-party tools, file-sharing and download sites, and cracks, cheats, or aimbots. These are reported routes from that period, not a complete or current list. BleepingComputer’s 2019 report

How did Masad use Telegram?

Telegram served as a communication and data-exfiltration channel controlled by the malware’s operators. NHS England Digital said Masad compressed collected data with an embedded archiving application and sent it through Telegram. In a 2019 CyberWire interview, Juniper Threat Labs head Mounir Hahad described the malware using Telegram’s API over HTTPS to send files to a hard-coded recipient, with a bundled 7-Zip utility. This does not mean that simply using Telegram infects a device, or that every victim’s Telegram account is taken over. Hahad said the malware did not need a regular Telegram account for its own communications. However, data associated with messaging applications—including Telegram data—could itself be among the material stolen from an infected device.

What information did Masad Stealer collect?

The reported categories varied by source and sample. NHS England Digital listed autofill and form data, browser passwords and cookies, cryptocurrency wallets, financial browser data, messaging applications, and user or system information. BleepingComputer additionally reported screenshots, desktop text files, Steam Desktop Authenticator sessions, usernames, passwords, and credit-card information. In the CyberWire interview, Hahad also mentioned files and information associated with FileZilla. NHS England Digital advisory BleepingComputer report CyberWire interview transcript

Clipboard cryptocurrency theft

Some reported Masad samples included a clipboard-monitoring function: when a user copied a recognized cryptocurrency wallet address, the malware could replace it with an address supplied by the operators. BleepingComputer reported this behavior for Monero, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Neo, and WebMoney. A victim who pasted the altered address into a transaction could send funds to the substituted destination. The reporting describes sample behavior, not proof that every Masad infection performed this function.

Persistence and additional payloads

BleepingComputer reported that some samples created a scheduled task to restart every minute and that some could drop additional malware, including cryptominers and other information stealers. These behaviors were attributed to some samples, not established as universal features of every version.

What did researchers observe in 2019?

In the 2019 CyberWire interview, Hahad said researchers had seen about 338 unique bot IDs at that time. He also described roughly 318 members in a Telegram group associated with customers or prospective customers, while noting uncertainty about the group’s purpose and whether members had purchased the malware. These are historical observations, not current counts or confirmed measures of active infections. CyberWire interview transcript

Hahad also described finding Masad bundled with about 15 popular downloads in his sample-based observations. He discussed a file-extraction limit of about 50 MB as a technical limitation at the time. Neither figure should be treated as a prevalence estimate or a current specification. Separately, BleepingComputer reported that the highest tier in an underground offer was advertised at $85 in 2019; that dated price is not current and has no relevance as a purchasing option.

How can you protect a computer and respond to suspected infection?

Reduce the chance of infection

  • Be cautious with unsolicited attachments and links, and avoid downloading cracked software, cheats, or other untrusted executables.
  • Keep the operating system and security software current, and run regular security scans.
  • Use a standard, non-administrator account for everyday work where practical.
  • Use strong password policies and monitor network, proxy, and firewall logs where you administer an organization’s systems.

These measures align with recommendations in the NHS England Digital advisory. In the 2019 CyberWire interview, Hahad separately advised consumers to use antivirus and suggested that organizations consider monitoring or blocking Telegram communications where appropriate to their environment. Blocking Telegram is context-dependent: it may disrupt legitimate business use and is not a universal substitute for endpoint protections. NHS England Digital advisory CyberWire interview transcript

If you suspect an infection

  1. Follow your organization’s incident-response process, if applicable. Isolate and investigate the affected endpoint in a way appropriate to your environment.
  2. From a separate, clean device, reset passwords for accounts used on the affected computer, as NHS England Digital advises. Prioritize email, financial services, and other accounts that can be used to reset or access others.
  3. Use trusted security tools or professional support to investigate and remediate the endpoint. A single scan should not be treated as proof that a device is clean.

Is Masad Stealer active today?

The cited reporting dates to September and October 2019, and the NHS advisory was last edited in February 2020. Those sources establish historical observations, not present-day campaign activity. They do not verify whether Masad bots, samples, or infrastructure remain active, nor whether historical indicators are still useful. Treat claims of current activity or working indicators as unverified unless supported by newer, authoritative threat intelligence.
