For most new buyers, choose the Standard Edition for your platform. It contains the complete single-player game, while the Digital Deluxe Edition was removed from the PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Epic Games stores on February 21, 2023. The Cosmic Deluxe Edition is a physical collector-style package whose exact contents and code condition must be checked copy by copy. On Nintendo Switch, the game is a cloud-streaming version rather than a locally running cartridge release.
This guide covers the 2021 Eidos-Montréal action-adventure—not the films, the separate Telltale game, or a multiplayer title—and explains what each edition historically included, what remains buyable, and which platform entitlement fits your hardware.

Which edition should I buy?
Buy the Standard Edition unless you are deliberately hunting a boxed Cosmic Deluxe copy and have confirmed its contents. Standard gives you the same core campaign and gameplay as the other editions. The Digital Deluxe package is a historical product rather than a normal current checkout option, and a secondhand Cosmic Deluxe box may have an already-used or expired code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn PlayStation, make sure the entitlement matches your hardware: a PS4 disc can enable the PS5 version only when the disc is inserted, so it does not solve the problem for a disc-free PS5. On Xbox, look for a physical or digital listing compatible with your console generation and Smart Delivery expectations. On PC, compare the complete live system-requirements table with your machine. On Switch, treat the purchase as access to a streamed game and run Nintendo’s free demo first.

What game is this buying guide about?
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is Eidos-Montréal’s original, single-player action-adventure released on October 26, 2021. You play as Star-Lord and direct a story-driven Guardians team through an original plot. It is not an adaptation of a particular film, not a multiplayer service, and not the separate episodic Telltale game.
The publisher’s 2021 launch announcement describes more than 40 in-game outfits and more than 30 classic 1980s songs. Those figures describe the game’s overall wardrobe and music experience; they are not a count of outfits sold only in Digital Deluxe, nor do they mean the Deluxe soundtrack download is the same thing as every song that plays during the campaign.
What does the Standard Edition include?
Standard includes the complete base game on the selected platform. It is the straightforward choice when you want to purchase a current digital copy without chasing discontinued bonuses. The US PlayStation digital listing currently advertises a Social-Lord outfit as an early unlock; regional storefronts and physical packages can describe bonuses differently, so read the listing for your territory.
Do not assume a physical Standard box carries every digital-download promotion ever advertised. Early-unlock items are cosmetic timing benefits, not separate missions, characters, or story chapters. The campaign, combat systems, exploration and main progression are the same core game regardless of whether you buy Standard or a former Deluxe package.
Can I still buy the Digital Deluxe Edition?
Not as a normal new digital purchase on the four stores named by Eidos-Montréal. Eidos removed Digital Deluxe from the PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and Epic Games stores on February 21, 2023. People who bought it earlier retain access through their game libraries; the delisting did not erase those entitlements.
Historically, Digital Deluxe contained:
- The main game.
- Sun-Lord and City-Lord Star-Lord outfit early unlocks.
- The Hits digital soundtrack.
- The Art of the Game digital mini artbook.
An Xbox listing also separately described the Social-Lord digital-download early unlock. Because the package is discontinued, do not treat an old product page, an unused-looking key, or a resale listing as proof that a new code will activate. Confirm the platform, region and seller’s return terms before paying for any purported Deluxe key.
What is the Cosmic Deluxe Edition, and is it worth buying used?
Cosmic Deluxe is a physical edition. Eidos stated that this edition could remain available for purchase after February 21, 2023, and that the code in its box could still be used for bonus-content redemption. That notice does not guarantee current retailer stock, a working code in every secondhand copy, or a complete set of regional inserts.
Before buying, ask the seller for photographs or a written inventory of the actual package:

- Disc condition: check for damage and verify that the disc matches the advertised console generation.
- Inserts and code: establish whether the bonus code card is present, unread, and still redeemable. A code that has already been claimed is not restored by owning the box.
- Package contents: do not assume a steelbook, full-size art book or any other collectible is included unless the listing explicitly shows it. The official transition notice does not establish every regional box component.
- Return policy: use a seller willing to accept a return if the code is missing, region-locked or invalid.
The former 25 Square Enix Members Reward Points stopped being granted on February 21, 2023. Their absence is not a defect in a current copy; it is a discontinued promotion. Cosmic Deluxe makes sense as a verified collector purchase, not as a reliable way to obtain unavailable digital extras.
Which bonuses are still available after the Square Enix Members shutdown?
Square Enix Members services were removed on February 21, 2023. The account-linked War-Lord outfit early unlock stopped being offered through that service, but Eidos says players can still find the War-Lord outfit during Chapter 13. That means a new player is not locked out of the cosmetic forever; it simply is no longer an account-registration reward.
Do not merge separate promotions into one promise. War-Lord was tied to the account service, Social-Lord was a digital-download early unlock described by storefront listings, and the historical preorder Throwback Guardians pack was a different promotion. They have different eligibility rules and should not be described as interchangeable Deluxe contents.
Recommended Free Tools
For previously owned Digital Deluxe copies, Eidos documented alternate ways to reach the soundtrack and mini artbook through the PlayStation console library or the PC game files. The original email-link instructions required linking before the service cutoff. If you bought Deluxe before the shutdown, check your existing library and installed files rather than expecting a new account-link email.
How does the PlayStation version work on PS4 and PS5?
Sony’s current US digital Standard listing provides both PS4 and PS5 downloads. Select the version that matches your console during installation. The listing also identifies offline play and one player, which fits the game’s single-player design.
A PS4 disc owner can download or play the PS5 version only while the PS4 disc is inserted as the license key. A disc-free PS5 cannot use that disc-based entitlement because it has no drive to verify the physical license. If you own a PS5 Digital Edition, buy a digital copy or obtain a platform entitlement that does not depend on a disc.
PlayStation currently shows access through the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog in the US listing. Catalog availability can change, so treat it as a subscription-access alternative rather than permanent ownership and recheck the live listing before subscribing or deleting a purchased copy. A subscription license also does not change the disc-upgrade rule.

Xbox launch guidance describes Smart Delivery for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. In practical terms, a compatible purchase is intended to provide the version appropriate to the Xbox console you use, but you still need to verify the exact retailer listing and your hardware. A physical Xbox One disc may not help on a disc-free console, and an old preorder page is not proof that a present-day box contains every former promotional insert.

For a digital purchase, sign in to the Microsoft account that will own the game and check the store page for the console families listed. For a disc, confirm the format, region and drive requirement before opening the package. Smart Delivery describes version entitlement; it does not make a used bonus code valid or turn a physical disc into a license for hardware without a disc drive.
What PC requirements should I check before buying?
Steam’s current listing specifies a minimum of Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB of RAM and 80 GB of available storage, plus named supported graphics hardware. The recommended memory figure is 16 GB. The 80 GB number is a current storefront requirement, not a 2021 sales statistic.
Use the full live Steam requirement table before purchasing. Compare your operating-system edition, processor, graphics card and driver support—not just RAM and free space. Leave additional room for updates and save files, and install on a drive with at least the listed free capacity. The storefront requirements are a baseline; they are not a promise of a particular frame rate or image quality on unspecified hardware.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If your PC is close to the minimum, check the exact GPU model against the named supported entries and confirm that Windows reports the expected 64-bit installation. Do not buy a generic system-cleaner or “game booster” as a requirement: the game’s published requirement table does not call for such software. The legitimate decision is whether your hardware meets the game’s published table.
Is the Nintendo Switch version a cartridge game?
No. Nintendo labels this release a digital Cloud Version. The game streams from remote servers rather than running the full software locally on a cartridge or entirely from the console’s internal storage. Nintendo’s official listing warns: “THIS GAME USES CLOUD STREAMING. PLEASE TRY OUT THE FREE DEMO BEFORE PURCHASE.”
The free demo is especially important because cloud performance depends on your network route, latency, congestion and Nintendo’s service availability. A small client download—Nintendo’s listing shows 83 MB—does not mean the complete adventure is installed locally. It is the application that connects you to the stream.
Nintendo marks the existing Switch listing as compatible with Switch 2 in behavior consistent with Switch. That is not evidence of a separately sold native Switch 2 edition. If local play, travel without reliable broadband or ownership of a cartridge is essential, choose a PlayStation, Xbox or PC version instead.

How should I choose between digital and physical?
Choose digital when you want immediate installation, no disc swapping and an entitlement tied to your account. Standard digital is the least complicated route for a new buyer. Check the exact store region and the console generation shown before checkout.

Choose physical when you value resale, lending or a boxed collectible and your console has a compatible disc drive. Physical ownership still involves practical limits: a disc-free console cannot read it, a used code may be consumed, and a retailer’s description may omit regional differences. A physical copy also does not automatically include every digital early-unlock promotion.
For Cosmic Deluxe, the physical-versus-digital decision is inseparable from package verification. Buy it because the inspected box and its collectible contents matter to you, not because the name guarantees a currently working Deluxe download.
What content is genuinely exclusive, and what is only an early unlock?
The documented Deluxe extras are cosmetic outfits and digital companion materials, not an exclusive campaign. “Early unlock” means the item becomes available sooner than it would through normal progression; it does not establish a separate story route or multiplayer advantage.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The War-Lord outfit illustrates why labels matter. Its account-linked early-unlock offer ended with the Members service, yet Eidos says it can still be discovered in Chapter 13. Likewise, the publisher’s 40-plus outfit count covers the game’s broad wardrobe and should not be read as 40 paid Deluxe items.
The 30-plus 1980s songs reported at launch are in-game music. The Hits is a separately described digital soundtrack associated with historical Deluxe content. A box or listing that mentions one should not be assumed to include the other without an explicit contents list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I verify before pressing Buy?
- Identify the platform: PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Series X|S, PC, or Switch Cloud Version.
- Choose the edition: Standard for a normal new purchase; Cosmic Deluxe only after checking the actual physical package; treat Digital Deluxe as discontinued.
- Check hardware constraints: disc drive for physical PlayStation or Xbox copies, Windows requirements for PC, and dependable broadband for Switch cloud streaming.
- Read the regional listing: bonuses and subscription availability can differ by country.
- Separate game ownership from extras: a code card, soundtrack, artbook file or early-unlock outfit may have a different redemption path from the base game.
- For used copies, confirm code status: ask whether it has been scratched, redeemed or tested on the relevant account; still request a return option because a seller’s claim is not a platform guarantee.
- Recheck changeable services: subscription catalogs, retailer inventory and cloud-service availability can change after publication.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying a PS4 disc for a disc-free PS5
The disc is required to validate the PS5 download and launch. A PS5 Digital Edition has no drive, so choose digital instead.
Assuming Digital Deluxe is still a live store option
The four stores named by Eidos delisted it in February 2023. Existing owners keep access, but a third-party listing is not equivalent to an active first-party purchase.
Confusing Cosmic Deluxe with a guaranteed complete collector set
Inspect the exact box. Do not infer a steelbook, full-size art book, unused code or a particular regional insert from the edition name alone.

Counting every outfit or song as a Deluxe bonus
The 40-plus outfits and 30-plus 1980s tracks are publisher launch figures for the game. Deluxe’s documented extras are a narrower set of outfits plus a digital soundtrack and mini artbook.
How we picked the recommendations
The recommendations prioritize the edition that remains a straightforward current purchase, preserve the distinction between historical and live storefront products, and account for platform-specific licensing. They also weigh the practical risks documented by the platform and publisher notices: disc-drive requirements, cloud dependency, PC storage and memory requirements, discontinued account services, and uncertainty around used physical codes and regional package contents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy require an internet connection after installation?
The PlayStation listing identifies offline play for the single-player game. The Switch Cloud Version is different: it needs a supported internet connection while you stream, so an offline environment is not a suitable use case for that edition.
Are the game’s 40-plus outfits all locked behind Deluxe editions?
No. Square Enix’s launch figure is the total wardrobe reported for the game, not a count of paid Deluxe-exclusive cosmetics. Digital Deluxe historically added specific early-unlock outfits, while at least the War-Lord outfit can still be found during Chapter 13.
What does the 83 MB Nintendo Switch download actually install?
It installs the cloud client that connects your Switch to the streamed game. The small file size is therefore not evidence that the full campaign is stored on the console or on a cartridge.
What should I do if a used Cosmic Deluxe code has already been redeemed?
Treat the physical game as the remaining value and contact the seller under the listing’s return policy. Eidos’ notice allowed continued redemption in principle, but it did not guarantee that every secondhand code is unused, valid in your region or still accepted today.
