Yes—Mario Tennis Fever supports up to four players on one Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch Online is not required for that couch setup. Start with Free Play, set a short match against a Novice CPU, and have each person press L and R together to join. You need one controller per human. If relatives bring another console, Local Play supports up to four people across consoles; if they do not own the game, a Switch 2 host can use GameShare to invite up to three nearby friends, including people using an original Switch.
This guide covers button controls, Swing Mode, cooperative activities, Tournament Doubles, several-console play, GameShare, and the hardware and version checks that prevent family-night delays.
What is the simplest family setup?
For one living room and one console, use Free Play. It lets you choose singles or doubles, match length, ball speed, court, Fever Rackets and CPU difficulty. Nintendo describes same-console multiplayer as “Play together on the same console (up to four players).” Additional controllers may be required depending on the number of people.
| Setup | Hardware | Game ownership | Players | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same-console button play | One Switch 2; one controller per person | One copy on the console | Up to four | Traditional singles, doubles or CPU matches |
| Swing Mode | One Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con per person, wrist straps and clear space | One copy on the console | Up to four, subject to available controllers | Motion-controlled tennis for children or relatives who prefer swinging |
| Local Play | Several consoles, each with its own copy; maximum two people per console | Every participating console needs the game | Up to four total | Families bringing multiple systems |
| GameShare | One Switch 2 host with the game; nearby Switch 2 or original Switch systems may join | Only the host needs the copy | Host plus up to three nearby friends | Visitors who do not own the game |
| LAN Play | Up to four docked Switch 2 systems, wired to the same router or network switch | Each station needs a copy | Up to four total, two per console | Large, wired tournament-style setups |
What do you need before starting?
Mario Tennis Fever is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive released worldwide on February 12, 2026. The original Nintendo Switch cannot run the game natively, although an original Switch can receive a GameShare session from a Switch 2 host.

How do I set up a same-console match in Free Play?
Free Play is the most flexible choice for siblings and mixed-skill groups. Use it for a normal singles or doubles match, then adjust the pace and rules so new players can return the ball.
- Start Mario Tennis Fever from the HOME Menu.
- Choose Free Play from the Main Menu.
- Set the match format: singles or doubles, the number of Fever Rackets and match length. Press
Ato confirm. - Choose a court and the other match settings. You can change the camera angle, ball speed and ball color on this screen.
- Use
LandRto set the number of players. Each human pressesLandRtogether to join. Press+or-if a controller is paired to the wrong slot. - Select characters. Press
Yto remap shot types toL,R,SL,SR,ZLandZR. In doubles, pressXto change team pairings. Empty positions can be filled by CPU players; choose their difficulty. - Select a Fever Racket for each character, including CPU characters when Fever Rackets are enabled.
- Press
Awhen everyone is ready. A control guide appears; pressAagain to begin.
Which Free Play settings work for beginners?
For a first family match, choose singles or doubles against a Novice CPU, use Slow Ball or Standard Ball, select quick play and turn Fever Rackets off. Quick play is first to seven points in a tiebreaker-style format, so children do not have to learn a long scoring sequence before taking a turn.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Once rallies are comfortable, switch on one or two Fever Rackets. The available Free Play ball speeds are Slow Ball, Standard Ball and High-Speed Ball. Match-length choices include quick play, extended play (two-game, one-set) and custom play. Custom play allows one, three or five games per set, two, four or six sets, and a tiebreaker toggle.
CPU difficulty runs from Novice through Intermediate, Expert, Pro and Ace. Expert, Pro and Ace are unlockable through Free Play singles results, so a new family group can begin with Novice without losing access to the harder settings later.
How do I add a second player for doubles or a tournament?
For a regular doubles match, add both players on the character screen with L+R, then use X to assign teams. The same pairing control works when a CPU fills an empty position.

When is LAN Play worth using?
LAN Play is an optional wired arrangement for a house tournament, not the normal family-room setup. Nintendo supports up to four docked Switch 2 consoles on the same wired router, or on a network switch connected to the router, with two players per console.
Each station needs a Switch 2, dock, AC adapter, Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, TV or monitor, Ethernet cable and a copy of the game. In the game, hold L and R and press the left stick inward so the menu changes from Local Play to LAN Play. Then create or join a room using the same host-and-join flow as Local Play.
Which family setup should you choose?
| Your situation | Use this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone is in one room with one console | Free Play | Fastest setup and complete control over rules, pace and CPU help |
| Players want to cooperate | 2P/4P Co-op Ring Shot or Trial Towers | Shared objectives replace winner-versus-loser play |
| Children or grandparents dislike shot buttons | Swing Mode | One Joy-Con per person and motion-based swings |
| Two people want a longer competitive activity | Tournament Doubles | Two humans face CPU pairs through a cup bracket |
| Visitors have consoles but no copy | GameShare | One Switch 2 host can invite up to three nearby friends, including original Switch users |
| Several households own the game | Local Play | Up to four total, with up to two players at each console |
How do I fix common local-multiplayer problems?
A controller will not join
Return to the player-count screen and have that person press L and R together. If the wrong controller appears in a slot, press + or - to re-pair it. In Swing Mode, use the single L or R join command shown for that mode rather than the button-mode combination.
There are not enough player slots
Check whether you selected singles or doubles and set the intended number with L and R. In Local Play, no more than two people can use one console. In GameShare Swing Controls, only one person can use each console.
A visitor cannot join GameShare
Confirm that the host is a Switch 2 running the game and that the visitor opened the HOME Menu’s GameShare icon, chose Join GameShare, then selected A Local User. The host must keep the session open; shared software stops working after the host ends the session.

Different copies cannot connect
Update every copy first. Players using their own copies must have matching software versions before Local Play or other linked modes can start.
Motion play feels unsafe
Stop and clear the area before continuing. Attach the wrist strap to every swinging Joy-Con, keep people and furniture outside the swing path, and use a button-controlled mode if the room is too small.
Does local play require Nintendo Switch Online?
No. Same-console play, nearby Local Play, LAN Play and local GameShare do not require Nintendo Switch Online. Ranked Match and Online Room require a Nintendo Account, an internet connection and Nintendo Switch Online. GameShare through GameChat also requires Nintendo Switch Online, so do not select that online route when everyone is physically together.
