The best Mario Kart 8 Deluxe controller settings depend on how you steer. Choose Tilt Controls on for motion steering and Tilt Controls off for stick-and-button steering. Then decide Smart Steering and Auto-Accelerate separately: Smart Steering can keep a learner from driving off the track but disables the third-stage Ultra Mini-Turbo, while Auto-Accelerate simply removes the need to hold the acceleration button.
There is no measured fastest setting established by the available Nintendo guidance. The four setups below are practical starting points for learning, manual technique, motion play and button play. Change one option at a time so you know which control is affecting the kart.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Motion learning | Players learning tilt steering or frequently falling off | Tilt on; Smart Steering on initially; Auto-Accelerate optional | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch family systems | Nov 2026 |
| Motion manual | Experienced motion players practicing full drift technique | Tilt on; Smart Steering off; Auto-Accelerate optional | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch family systems | Nov 2026 |
| Button learning | Stick players who want temporary cornering assistance | Tilt off; Smart Steering on temporarily; Auto-Accelerate optional | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch family systems | Nov 2026 |
| Button manual | Stick-and-button players seeking every drift technique | Tilt off; Smart Steering off; Auto-Accelerate chosen to taste | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch family systems | Nov 2026 |
These recommendations separate three controls that are often confused: tilt steering, Smart Steering assistance and Auto-Accelerate. Nintendo describes the same options in its support material and beginner guide: tilt-control instructions and beginner guidance.
Which controller setting should you use first?
Use the simplest setup that solves your immediate problem. If you want to turn by moving the controller, enable Tilt Controls. If you want conventional steering, disable it and use the left stick. Smart Steering is an independent aid for staying on the course, and Auto-Accelerate is an independent convenience option for maintaining speed.

- Choose motion learning when keeping the kart on the track matters more than practicing advanced drifts.
- Choose motion manual when you already control corners reliably and want access to the full Mini-Turbo system.
- Choose button learning when stick steering feels natural but you still need help near edges and ramps.
- Choose button manual when you want to control every steering correction and drift yourself.
Smart Steering does not select motion steering, and turning on Tilt Controls does not automatically turn on Smart Steering. Treat the switches as separate decisions rather than as one “beginner mode.”
How do you turn Tilt Controls on or off?
You can change motion steering at vehicle selection or while paused during a race. Nintendo warns that the toggle label and gyro icon can vary with the controller and its orientation, so use the button shown beside the icon rather than memorizing a universal button.
- From the main menu, enter a game mode and continue until the vehicle-selection screen appears.
- Press + or – to open the kart-stat display.
- Find the tilt-controls or gyro icon. Press the button indicated next to that icon to switch the feature.
- Look for confirmation: Nintendo says a yellow curved arrow over the tilt icon means Tilt Controls are on.
- Start the race, or pause during a race and press + or – to reach the same controls.
The icon is the reliable check because the indicated button can differ between a two-handed controller, a sideways Joy-Con and other orientations. Nintendo’s exact procedure is documented at Nintendo Australia’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe support page.

Motion players should begin with Tilt Controls on. Pick Smart Steering according to whether staying on the road or learning unrestricted drifting is the priority, then decide whether holding acceleration is comfortable.
Motion setup for learning
Set Tilt Controls on. Leave Smart Steering on if you regularly run wide, miss a turn or fall from a track. Turn Auto-Accelerate on only if holding the acceleration button makes it harder to concentrate on steering; it does not change the steering method.
Once your lines are consistent, switch Smart Steering off for practice sessions. This staged approach lets you learn the physical movement without permanently giving up the advanced drift option.
Motion setup for manual technique
Set Tilt Controls on and Smart Steering off when you want to perform the complete drift sequence, including the third Mini-Turbo stage. Auto-Accelerate remains a personal comfort choice: leave it off when you want to manage throttle manually, or turn it on when pressing the accelerator distracts from steering.

Motion input and steering assistance are not the same feature. You can steer by tilting while still receiving Smart Steering help, or steer by tilting with that help disabled.
What are the best settings for stick-and-button players?
For conventional play, turn Tilt Controls off so incidental controller movement does not become steering input. Smart Steering and Auto-Accelerate can then be chosen independently.
Button setup for learning
Set Tilt Controls off. Keep Smart Steering on temporarily if edge detection and cornering are your main difficulties. Use Auto-Accelerate if you prefer not to hold the accelerator continuously; it is an accessibility and comfort choice, not a speed upgrade.
Button setup for manual technique
Set Tilt Controls off and Smart Steering off when you want complete control of lines, drifts and corrections. Choose Auto-Accelerate based on whether manually holding acceleration is important to your technique. The Nintendo-hosted beginner guide notes that the third-stage Ultra Mini-Turbo cannot be used while Smart Steering is on: Nintendo’s guide.
What does Smart Steering change?
Smart Steering provides automatic help when a player struggles with turns or approaches the edge of the course. Its trade-off is technique access: the third-stage Ultra Mini-Turbo is unavailable while the feature is enabled.
That restriction makes Smart Steering useful as a learning aid rather than an all-purpose performance setting. Leave it on when avoiding falls is the larger problem. Turn it off when you are ready to practice the full drift sequence or need the third Mini-Turbo stage. The sources do not establish a quantified lap-time penalty or a universal fastest configuration.
What does Auto-Accelerate do?
Auto-Accelerate keeps the kart accelerating without requiring you to hold the acceleration button. It does not turn on Tilt Controls, provide Smart Steering, or prove that the kart travels faster.

Use it when sustained button pressure causes fatigue, when a new player is coordinating several controls, or when you want to focus on steering and item timing. Leave it off when manually controlling acceleration is part of how you play. You can use Auto-Accelerate with either motion or stick steering.

The button map depends on whether you hold two Joy-Con controllers together, use a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, or hold one Joy-Con sideways. Do not transfer the two-handed layout to a sideways controller.
Two Joy-Con in a grip or Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
| Action | Button or control |
|---|---|
| Accelerate | A |
| Brake or reverse | B |
| Steer | Left stick |
| Drift | Hold R while steering |
| Mini-Turbo | Release R after the drift sparks charge |
| Use an item | L |
Nintendo lists this layout for a two-handed Joy-Con grip and the Pro Controller in its controller guide: Nintendo controller operations.
One sideways Joy-Con
A sideways Joy-Con uses a different arrangement. Nintendo’s right-Joy-Con example uses X to accelerate and SR to drift; labels differ on the left Joy-Con. Check the on-screen control display for the exact hand and orientation you are using instead of assuming A, B, R and L are in the same places.
Do you need a wheel or a different controller?
No. A wheel accessory is optional; it changes how you hold a sideways Joy-Con, not the underlying game setting. Choose hardware by steering style, hand position and the controllers you already own, not by an unsupported promise of faster laps.

A single sideways Joy-Con is suitable for local multiplayer when each player has a controller. Because its labels and grip differ from a two-handed setup, confirm the displayed map before racing.
Joy-Con Wheel
Nintendo documents a sideways Joy-Con in a Joy-Con Wheel as a supported configuration. The original Joy-Con Wheel is an accessory shell and does not include a Joy-Con, so you need a compatible Joy-Con separately. On Nintendo Switch 2, original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly, but the original Joy-Con Wheel does not fit Joy-Con 2. Nintendo’s accessory and compatibility details are at Nintendo’s controller compatibility support page.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
The Pro Controller provides the two-handed button layout, including left-stick steering, R for drifting and L for items. Nintendo says the original Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Nintendo Switch 2. It is a conventional button option, not a requirement for turning Tilt Controls on or off.
Why does the kart steer or accelerate by itself?
Check the software options before assuming a controller fault. Smart Steering can make corrections near the edge, Tilt Controls can interpret controller movement as steering, and Auto-Accelerate can keep the kart moving without a held accelerator.
- Pause the race or open the vehicle-selection stat display with + or –.
- Check whether the yellow curved arrow is present over the tilt icon.
- Turn Tilt Controls off if you intend to use the stick, or on if you intend to use motion.
- Review Smart Steering and Auto-Accelerate separately so you do not disable the wrong feature.
- Race a short course again to identify which change removed the unwanted behavior.
If the kart still moves without input after the settings are correct, continue with controller updates and calibration rather than changing all three options at once.
What should you do when tilt steering does not respond?
First confirm that Tilt Controls are enabled and that the icon shows the yellow curved arrow. Motion steering will not respond when the feature is off, even if the controller itself has motion sensors.
For persistent Joy-Con motion problems, Nintendo advises checking for controller and system updates, then calibrating motion controls. Detach an original Joy-Con before following this path:
- Open System Settings on the console.
- Select Controllers and Sensors.
- Select Calibrate Motion Controls.
- Follow the on-screen instructions while the detached controller is held still as requested.
Stick drift has a separate tool: choose System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Control Sticks. Do not use stick calibration as a substitute for motion calibration. Nintendo’s troubleshooting instructions are available at Nintendo controller calibration support.
How do controller settings work in local multiplayer?
Settings are not necessarily a single permanent profile for every local player. Nintendo’s Japanese support information says settings save after a race for player one, while settings for other local players revert to their initially on state when the software closes.

On a shared console, have each player inspect the icons at the start of a new session. If an assist or tilt option appears unexpectedly, change it from that player’s own vehicle-selection display before the race begins. This is especially important when one player uses a sideways Joy-Con and another uses a two-handed controller.
How can you transition from assisted to manual play?
Change one assistance setting at a time and use a familiar course. This makes it clear whether a problem comes from steering input, edge assistance or acceleration automation.
- Keep your chosen steering method fixed: Tilt Controls on for motion, off for stick play.
- If staying on course is difficult, leave Smart Steering on while learning the track.
- When cornering feels reliable, turn Smart Steering off and practice holding R while steering.
- Observe the drift sparks and release R after the charge reaches the stage you want.
- Decide separately whether Auto-Accelerate helps your concentration or removes a control you want to manage.
- Confirm the displayed icons again after changing controllers or controller orientation.
This progression preserves the distinction between learning assistance and steering style. It also lets you regain Smart Steering temporarily without changing from motion to buttons, or vice versa.

Where can you see the game’s control explanations?
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe does not supply a paper or electronic manual. Nintendo directs players to the in-game Help content, while its online support pages explain controller layouts, tilt toggles and calibration. Open the game’s Help option when you need a control reminder during setup, and use the online instructions when diagnosing a controller or compatibility issue.
How we picked these settings
The four recommendations use the distinctions documented by Nintendo: motion steering is controlled by Tilt Controls; Smart Steering helps with staying on course but blocks the third Ultra Mini-Turbo stage; Auto-Accelerate removes the need to hold acceleration; and button labels vary by controller orientation. No setting is presented as a measured fastest choice because the cited sources provide no comparative timing study.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can each player use a different steering method in local multiplayer?
Yes, local players can use different controller types and therefore different displayed layouts. Before starting a new session, each player should open their own vehicle-selection controls and verify the tilt, Smart Steering and Auto-Accelerate icons rather than relying on another player’s settings.
Why did my assist settings come back after I closed the game?
Nintendo’s support information distinguishes player one from other local players: player one’s settings save after a race, while other players’ settings can return to their initial on state when the software closes. Recheck the icons for every player at the beginning of the next session.

Can I use the original Joy-Con Wheel with Joy-Con 2?
No. The original Joy-Con Wheel does not fit Joy-Con 2. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Nintendo Switch 2, but the wheel accessory itself must match the Joy-Con generation it was designed for.
What should I calibrate if the stick works but motion steering does not?
Use Calibrate Motion Controls, not Calibrate Control Sticks, and detach an original Joy-Con before starting Nintendo’s motion-calibration procedure. If the problem is limited to left-stick movement, use the separate control-stick calibration option instead.
