The Makita DLM380Z is a compact cordless mower for buyers already invested in Makita’s 18V LXT battery system. It uses two 18V batteries together (18Vx2, marketed as 36V), cuts a 380 mm (15-inch) path, collects 40 litres of grass and offers six height positions. It can make sense for a small to medium lawn when you already own two compatible batteries, but the Z version is commonly sold as a tool-only package. Runtime is not one fixed number: Makita quotes anything from about 17 to 35 minutes with different battery capacities and regional specifications. Treat those figures as manufacturer estimates, not independent test results.
Is the Makita DLM380Z worth buying?
It is a sensible choice when three conditions line up: you already have two compatible 18V LXT batteries, your lawn suits a 380 mm cutting width, and you are comfortable checking the exact specification for your country. The mower’s useful strengths are its straightforward 18Vx2 battery platform, 40 L catcher and six-position height adjustment. The main drawbacks are the need for two batteries, the possibility that the Z package excludes both batteries and charger, and the lack of a single dependable runtime figure across markets.
Makita’s Canadian page presents the mower as suitable for lawns up to 6,000 square feet (550 m²), while the Indian page gives a 270–540 m² work estimate with two BL1830B batteries. Those are regional manufacturer statements, not a guaranteed capacity. A lawn with wet or tall grass, slopes, frequent stops or an older battery pair can require more energy than the published examples suggest.

What is the DLM380Z’s battery system?
The mower has two 18V lithium-ion battery bays and runs them together as an 18Vx2/36V system. It is not a single-battery 36V mower: both 18V packs are part of the operating setup, so a buyer starting without batteries needs two compatible cartridges and a charger.

Which batteries are compatible?
Makita’s regional pages identify the platform as 18V LXT, but the exact approved battery cartridges should be checked in the manual and local product listing. Do not assume that every Makita-branded 18V pack is approved simply because it fits physically. Runtime examples in the product pages use paired BL1830B, BL1850B or BL1860B batteries, so the capacity and condition of the pair matter.
What does the “Z” package mean?
Package contents vary by market. Makita Canada explicitly describes the DLM380Z as tool-only and says, “Batteries and Charger Sold Separately.” Makita Malaysia also labels the Z configuration as being without battery and charger. Confirm the seller’s box-contents list before ordering; a photograph of the mower alone is not proof that batteries are included.
What are the Makita DLM380Z specifications?
The core specification is consistent across the cited regional pages, but the lowest cutting-height setting and quoted operating figures vary. Use the row for the market in which you will buy the mower rather than combining regional numbers into one universal specification.
| Specification | Published value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Battery system | Two 18V lithium-ion batteries; 18Vx2/36V | Confirm the exact approved cartridges in the local manual. |
| Cutting width | 380 mm (15 in) | Manufacturer specification. |
| Grass basket | 40 L | Manufacturer specification. |
| Height adjustment | Six positions | India and Malaysia list 25–75 mm; Canada lists 20–75 mm. |
| No-load speed | 3,700 rpm | Manufacturer no-load figure, not a cutting-performance test. |
| Sound pressure | 81 dB(A) | Listed by Makita India; China also lists 81 dB(A) sound pressure. |
| Sound power | 93 dB(A) | Listed by Makita China; sound power is not the same measurement as sound pressure. |
| Weight | 14.5 kg (India); 14.4 kg/31.7 lb (Canada) | Battery configuration and regional weighing conventions can affect the published number. |
| Included equipment | Offset wrench, blade set and grass catcher on the Canadian tool-only listing | Check the contents for your local variant. |
Makita Malaysia warns that “Items of standard equipment and specifications may vary by country or area.” That warning is particularly important for the 20 mm versus 25 mm minimum height and for package contents.
How much lawn can it cut on one charge?
There is no single DLM380Z runtime. Makita’s pages quote different results with different battery capacities, and the figures are estimates rather than independent measurements.
| Source and battery setup | Quoted operating figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Makita India, two BL1830B batteries (3.0 Ah) | 17 minutes and 270–540 m² | Manufacturer estimate on an undated product page. |
| Makita Malaysia, two BL1850B batteries (5.0 Ah) | Approximately 30 minutes | Manufacturer estimate; the page notes that actual performance may vary by application. |
| Makita China, two BL1860B batteries (6.0 Ah) | Approximately 35 minutes | Manufacturer estimate for that battery configuration. |
| Makita Canada | Up to 550 m² suitability statement | Presented as suitability for lawns up to 6,000 square feet, not as a tested runtime or guarantee. |
Why do the figures differ so much?
The battery capacities are different, and the pages come from different markets. Grass density, moisture, cutting height, battery age, terrain and the amount of time spent stopped or turning also affect how long the mower runs. Makita Malaysia’s wording is explicit: “Actual performance may vary based on application.”

For planning, use the figure tied to the batteries you actually own and leave a margin for difficult conditions. If your lawn is near the upper end of the quoted area, a second charged pair can be more practical than assuming the largest published number will apply.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat cutting and collection features does it have?
380 mm cutting width
A 380 mm (15-inch) deck is a compact format. It is easier to manoeuvre around narrow passages and garden obstacles than a wider deck, but it covers fewer square metres per pass. On a larger open lawn, expect more passes than you would with a wider mower; on a small, irregular lawn, the narrower path can be easier to place accurately.
Six height positions
The mower has six selectable cutting positions. The published range is 25–75 mm on Makita India and Malaysia pages and 20–75 mm on the Canadian page. Because the low-end value differs by region, check the local specification if a very short cut is important to you. Set the height before mowing and choose a conservative setting when grass is long or wet rather than trying to remove too much in one pass.
40 L grass catcher
The 40 L basket reduces the number of emptying stops compared with a very small catcher, but capacity depends on how dense and damp the clippings are. Makita Canada says the mower can also be used without the catcher. That gives you a collection or discharge choice, subject to local rules and the operating instructions for your variant.
How noisy and heavy is the DLM380Z?
Makita India lists 81 dB(A) sound pressure. Makita China lists the same 81 dB(A) sound-pressure figure and a separate 93 dB(A) sound-power figure. These measurements describe different things, so they should not be treated as competing noise ratings or compared directly as though they were one scale. Hearing protection and consideration for neighbours remain sensible precautions for powered mowing.
Published weight is 14.5 kg on Makita India and 14.4 kg (31.7 lb) in the Canadian catalogue. Those values may reflect different battery assumptions or regional specification conventions. Add the weight of both batteries when judging lifting, stairs and storage, and check the local manual for handling guidance.

What is included, and what must you buy separately?
On the Canadian tool-only listing, the mower is supplied with an offset wrench, blade set and grass catcher, while batteries and charger are separate purchases. Malaysia likewise identifies the Z package as without battery and charger. Other regional boxes can differ, so the local seller’s contents list is authoritative for your purchase.
- Potentially included: mower, grass catcher, blade set and offset wrench on the Canadian listing.
- Potentially excluded: two 18V LXT batteries and a compatible charger.
- Before ordering: verify the exact battery models, charger, warranty region and included accessories in the local listing or manual.
If you are not already on the 18V LXT platform, calculate the cost of two batteries and a charger before comparing the DLM380Z with a complete mower kit. A low tool-only price can be misleading when the energy hardware is not already in your workshop.
How should you evaluate the DLM380Z for your lawn?
- Measure the practical area. Include narrow side strips, slopes and sections that require extra passes, not just the lawn’s rough rectangle.
- Check your battery inventory. You need two approved 18V LXT packs available at the same time. Record their model and capacity.
- Match the local height range. Confirm whether your market lists 20–75 mm or 25–75 mm and whether six positions meet your preferred cut.
- Decide how you will handle clippings. The 40 L catcher is useful for collection; the Canadian page also allows catcher-free operation.
- Budget the complete setup. Add two batteries, a charger and any future blade or service parts if the listing is tool-only.
- Check availability and support. Confirm the seller’s warranty, local manual, replacement-blade route and battery availability before purchase.
This process is more reliable than choosing on the advertised “36V” label alone. The mower’s suitability depends on the complete battery-and-lawn combination.

What is a safe first-use routine?
Use the operating and safety procedure in the manual for your exact regional model. A practical pre-mow checklist is:
- Inspect the lawn and remove stones, wire, toys and other objects that could be struck.
- Check that the blade, catcher and fasteners are correctly fitted before inserting batteries.
- Fit two charged, approved batteries and confirm the mower’s indicators or start procedure respond normally.
- Choose the cutting height before entering dense grass; raise it if the first pass meets unusually tall growth.
- Keep bystanders clear, avoid mowing in conditions where footing is uncertain, and stop before clearing a blockage.
- Remove the batteries before cleaning, inspecting the blade or transporting the mower.
These are general precautions, not a substitute for the model’s official instructions. The secondary manual text hosted by Manualzz should not replace the official Makita manual for battery, blade or safety procedures.
How do maintenance and replacement blades work?
Keep the underside, discharge path and catcher free of compacted clippings, and inspect the blade for damage or excessive wear after use. Remove both batteries before any inspection or cleaning. Avoid using a damaged or distorted blade, and follow the manual’s torque and installation instructions rather than relying on feel.

Makita Canada provides a parts breakdown and lists a blade set for the DLM380Z. Blade part numbers and fit can vary by exact regional variant, so confirm the model designation and part number with a Makita dealer or service channel before ordering. A replacement blade is a normal maintenance route; it is not evidence that every blade sold for another Makita mower will fit.

CHOICE has a public DLM380Z listing that records “Year tested: Pre-2019.” Its detailed expert rating and performance sub-scores are restricted to members. The public listing therefore confirms that a test entry exists and that it is old, but it does not reveal enough evidence to claim a particular cut-quality, runtime or handling result.
This article consequently separates published specifications from independent testing. It does not present a hands-on test, a measured battery-life result or a head-to-head ranking. If you need independently measured performance, treat the CHOICE entry as a lead to investigate through its current membership content rather than inferring the hidden scores.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does it fit Makita’s newer mower range?
Makita’s 2026 Singapore outdoor-equipment catalogue includes the DLM382 and other models. That demonstrates that Makita lists a broader and newer range, but it does not prove that the DLM382 is a direct replacement for the DLM380Z in every country or that the DLM380Z has been discontinued worldwide. Availability, support and battery compatibility should be checked in your own market.
For a fair comparison with another mower, use the same local market and compare complete kits rather than bare-tool prices. The meaningful axes are battery ownership and total kit cost, cutting width, height range, catcher capacity, published lawn guidance and the age of the model’s support documentation.

What are the DLM380Z’s main advantages and limitations?
Advantages
- Uses the widely deployed 18V LXT battery family in a two-pack 36V configuration.
- Compact 380 mm cutting width for manoeuvring in smaller or irregular spaces.
- Six height positions and a 40 L catcher.
- Can be operated without the catcher according to the Canadian product page.
- Published runtime examples cover several battery capacities, allowing a realistic estimate when your packs match one of them.
Limitations
- Two compatible batteries are required; a single 18V pack is not the operating setup.
- The Z package may exclude batteries and charger, so the complete cost can be much higher than the bare-tool price.
- Regional pages disagree on the minimum cutting height: 20 mm in Canada versus 25 mm in India and Malaysia.
- Runtime and area claims are manufacturer estimates from different markets and battery capacities, not one universal result.
- Public independent-test evidence is limited to a pre-2019 CHOICE listing with member-only scores.
Who should buy the Makita DLM380Z?
Buy it when you already own two approved 18V LXT batteries, want a compact 15-inch mower and have a lawn within the practical range of the quoted regional guidance. It is especially straightforward for an existing Makita user who can treat the mower as another tool sharing current batteries.

Pause before buying if you need a complete ready-to-mow kit, have no LXT batteries, require a guaranteed runtime, or need a cutting-height specification below the range listed in your market. In those cases, compare complete packages and local support rather than choosing on the DLM380Z name alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the DLM380Z run with only one 18V battery installed?
The mower is designed around two 18V batteries operating together as an 18Vx2 system. Use only the battery arrangement and cartridge models permitted by the manual for your regional variant; do not treat it as a one-pack mower.
Are Makita’s 17-, 30- and 35-minute figures directly comparable?
No. They come from different regional pages and different paired battery capacities: BL1830B, BL1850B and BL1860B. They are useful reference points only when your batteries and mowing conditions match the cited setup.
Does the Canadian 550 m² figure guarantee that my lawn will finish on one charge?
No. It is a suitability statement for lawns up to 6,000 square feet, not a measured runtime guarantee. Grass height, moisture, terrain, cutting height and battery condition can reduce the area covered.
Where can I get a replacement blade for this mower?
Makita Canada’s parts breakdown lists a blade set, but confirm the part number and fit for your exact regional DLM380Z before ordering. A Makita dealer or authorised service channel can verify the correct component.
