MAINGEAR says its redesigned MG-1 Mk. II produced a thermal environment that outperformed an open-air bench in the company’s own testing. That is a manufacturer claim, not a result independently demonstrated in the cited review: Tom’s Hardware measured temperatures in a configured MG-1, but did not compare it with an open-air bench.
What does “outperform open-air cooling” mean?
An open-air bench is a test setup with components mounted outside a conventional enclosed PC case. MAINGEAR’s April 22, 2026 launch announcement says its redesigned MG-1 performed better thermally than an open-air setup in the company’s testing. The release does not provide a complete protocol for that comparison, so the claim should be read as MAINGEAR’s stated result—not as a universal finding about open benches or a result independently confirmed by the review discussed below. How the redesigned MG-1 moves air
MAINGEAR describes a cooling arrangement intended to bring cool air to the graphics card while moving CPU heat out through the top of the case:
- Front intake: Three 140 mm fans draw air through a large front intake.
- GPU airflow: A lower air scoop is intended to direct intake air toward the graphics card.
- CPU heat exhaust: A top-mounted 360 mm all-in-one liquid cooler exhausts CPU heat from the case.
- Less visible wiring: With a compatible MG-RC reverse-connector motherboard, connections can be routed behind the board, clearing the main chamber. MAINGEAR says this less-obstructed interior contributes to the airflow path.
This is the manufacturer’s explanation of the design; it is not a substitute for a controlled case-versus-bench test. The current MG-1 product page lists an Epic 360 or TRYX Panorama SE 360 AIO option, but available components depend on the selected configuration.

What independent testing measured—and what it did not
Tom’s Hardware’s May 8, 2026 review tested a particular MG-1 configuration in Metro Exodus at RTX settings. The reviewer ran the test 15 times, describing the workload as roughly half an hour of gaming. Across that procedure, the system averaged 188.39 FPS, with an average CPU temperature of 59.7 °C and GPU temperature of 68.12 °C. These figures describe that review system and test; they are not results for every MG-1 build.
The review did not report an open-air control or a side-by-side temperature comparison with a bare bench. Its measurements therefore cannot independently establish MAINGEAR’s open-air claim. A meaningful comparison would need the same components, ambient conditions, workload, fan settings, sensor placement, and run duration in both setups; the sources cited here do not establish that MAINGEAR published those details. Which MG-1 configuration are you considering?
“The MG-1” is not a single fixed set of parts. MAINGEAR’s current page lists support for GPUs up to 390 mm and configurations up to 128 GB of DDR5, along with storage options that include up to five Gen4 M.2 drives and one Gen5 M.2 drive. It also lists Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. These are product-page limits and options, not a guarantee that every system includes the maximum capacity or every listed feature.
Before comparing performance or price, check the precise CPU, GPU, memory, storage, cooling, and motherboard in the listing. A review result or price tied to one component combination should not be assumed to apply to another. MAINGEAR lists a one-year standard warranty, with an option to upgrade to three years, and lifetime phone and email support; confirm the terms for the configuration and sale you are considering on the official MG-1 page.

What are the trade-offs?
Tom’s Hardware praised the reviewed system’s clean build, performance, and range of configuration options, while flagging price and limited front-panel ports as downsides. At the time of that May 2026 review, the desktop started at $2,249, and the high-end reviewed configuration exceeded $7,000. Those are time-sensitive review-era prices, not current quotes; compare live listings with the exact parts selected.
The case also emphasizes customization: MAINGEAR describes a tool-free magnetic front panel and diffused RGB lighting, and sells MG-1 panel artwork separately through its MG-1 collection. That artwork is a personalization option, not a cooling upgrade.

How to assess the claim when comparing PCs
If cooling performance matters to your purchase, compare systems under matched conditions rather than relying on a single headline claim. Look for the exact hardware, a stated repeatable workload, sustained CPU and GPU temperatures, fan noise, and test duration. For an open-bench comparison in particular, both setups need the same parts and test conditions. Also weigh the MG-1’s configuration, price, warranty, footprint, and front-panel ports against the alternatives you are considering.
