Should I choose Normal or POSSESSION Mode?
Choose Normal for a first playthrough. POSSESSION is a separate expert-oriented ruleset, not simply a second name for the same difficulty: it removes visual assistance, restricts photography and makes mistakes much more costly.

How does the camera work in MADiSON?
The camera links the ordinary house to the supernatural layer. A successful photograph can expose a hidden number, reveal a clue, alter an object or trigger a door, but random flashing is not a reliable strategy. The subject should be supported by something you have already seen, read or noticed.
- Equip the camera. Keep it ready when a room contains an unusual mark, light, portrait, door or other object that the current clue seems to identify.
- Aim at the specific subject. Look for a subject that is framed, marked or otherwise connected to your evidence. An unusual light or a hanging portrait can be relevant in an early route, but not every unusual object reacts.
- Take the photograph. The shutter consumes a virtual photograph; it does not require a real instant camera or physical film.
- Develop the print manually. Wait for the image to appear rather than assuming the shutter sound alone solved anything. The developed image may contain a number, symbol or changed detail that was absent from the live view.
- Inspect the print and the room together. Compare the photograph with the current scene. If a puzzle looks complete but a door, cage or mechanism does not move, the target may need to be photographed after its physical arrangement is correct.
- Revisit changed spaces. A print can reveal a route or state change that makes a previously searched room relevant again.
The PlayStation store description explains the camera’s clue and object-changing role at the official listing. A useful rule is “clue first, camera second”: photograph the object your evidence points toward, then inspect what the print changes.
What should I do during the first minutes?
Begin by building a reliable evidence trail rather than rushing toward the next door. Search every accessible container and surface, examine anything you pick up, and leave enough inventory capacity for the next discovery.
- Search methodically. Open drawers, cabinets and other interactable containers. Check shelves, walls and corners instead of assuming the objective marker identifies every useful item.
- Read and rotate clues. Examine both sides of notes, portraits and objects. A number, age, symbol or location can be printed on a reverse side.
- Notice the “before and after.” When the room changes, compare it with your earlier mental map. A moved portrait, new light or altered doorway can be the actual clue.
- Test only evidence-backed interactions. If a clue points to a photograph, use the camera. If it points to an order, count or relationship, record that relationship before trying combinations.
- Keep a short written log. Record names, ages, locations, sequences and arithmetic. This prevents a randomized value from being confused with a value from a different room or playthrough.

Are MADiSON’s puzzle codes randomized?
Specific puzzle particulars can change between playthroughs. The official store copy warns that puzzles change, and published walkthroughs caution that example values may differ, so derive the answer from your own clues instead of entering a memorized safe code, clock time or portrait order.
How do the attic portraits work?
Collect the portraits and inspect the ages written on their backs. Marked spots in the room are camera targets: photograph them to reveal wall numbers, then apply the arithmetic relationship stated by the room. The important result is the relationship between the ages, revealed numbers and arrangement; the displayed values may not match an online example.
How do I approach the clock room?
Compare each movable clock face with the clock positioned behind it. Use those paired readings to determine the correct alignment rather than treating one visible time as a permanent code. Once the faces are aligned, photograph the changed door or other camera-marked target to complete the state change. What is the logic of the weight puzzle?
Interpret the animal clue as an ordering by height. Place the heavier weights in the positions implied by that ordering, then photograph the partly raised cage when the physical setup is correct. If the cage remains unchanged, check both the height interpretation and the required photograph rather than repeatedly moving weights at random.
How should I solve the mausoleum rings?
Photograph the sides of the rings to rotate them. Use the victims’ sequence and burial locations as the organizing evidence, then verify that the resulting arrangement matches those facts. Why did a puzzle not open after I placed everything?
The most common explanation is that placement is only half of the trigger. MADiSON often expects a camera action after the physical arrangement is correct.

- Re-read the clue. Look for a marked surface, unusual light, changed doorway or wording that implies “look,” “show” or “photograph.”
- Develop the latest print. A photograph that has not been developed and inspected may contain the missing number or symbol.
- Check the exact target. Photograph the changed door, cage, mirror or marked spot, not merely the general room.
- Confirm the relationship. For an ordering or arithmetic puzzle, verify that you used the clue’s relationship rather than an example value from a guide.
- Leave and return once. Some state changes become clear only after you step away, inspect the print and approach the object again.
Do not assume a failed trigger means the game is broken. If the arrangement, clue interpretation and camera target all match and the state still does not change, reload the most recent normal save before repeating the sequence.
How should I manage inventory and the storage safe?
Use the storage safe whenever carried objects block a new pickup, but preserve enough open space for the next room’s discoveries. Storage is a planning tool, not permission to discard every item on demand.
- Store objects that are not part of the immediate objective when the inventory is full.
- Before leaving for a multi-room route, retrieve any tool the next stage explicitly requires.
- For the mausoleum route, keep or retrieve the hammer before setting out; the walkthrough route specifically calls for it.
- If an item seems useless, examine it and its context before storing it. A clue on its reverse side can matter later.
- When a return trip is likely, note the safe’s location and the item you left there so you do not search every room again.
Inventory pressure is intentional: it makes you decide what evidence and tools belong to the current objective. The practical goal is not to carry everything, but to avoid entering a puzzle route without the one tool or camera target it expects.

How do I survive encounters and Blue Knees?
MADiSON includes hostile entities, so environmental changes are not only jump scares. Pay attention to the room, keep the camera ready when the game signals a creature, and use the brief openings an encounter gives you.
Blue Knees: later-game, lightly spoilery advice
When Blue Knees approaches, aim and take a photograph of the creature. The flash repels it temporarily, giving you a short reprieve rather than permanently solving the encounter. Use that time to continue the gramophone objective.
- Keep the creature in view long enough to aim.
- Take the photograph as it approaches; do not wait until the attack has already interrupted you.
- Move immediately toward the next gramophone task while the creature is away.
- Complete the required recordings, find the two eyeballs, and return them to the appropriate hole to advance.

What changes in the October 2026 update?
The October 26, 2026 update makes a first playthrough more approachable without changing the underlying camera-and-clue design. Normal Mode now offers optional puzzle hints, and subtitle size can be increased. Those options are useful if you want direction while still solving the relationships yourself.

POSSESSION Mode is the deliberate contrast: no visual hints or photography zones, tougher enemies, limited photographs, no autosave and a death that ends the run. The developer’s “43 photographs available” statement applies to POSSESSION Mode only; it is accompanied by advice to search for film that may provide an extra photograph, so do not quote 43 as a universal campaign cap.
The developer has also announced The Maxwells’ Curse, a free expansion for game owners planned for 2027. It is separate from the current beginner campaign and does not change the steps in this guide.

The ESRB rates MADiSON Mature 17+ for blood and gore, partial nudity, strong language and violence. Its summary includes a first-person hanging sequence; consult the ESRB rating if you need detailed content information before playing.
Which physical edition fits my platform?
Physical releases are available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, with edition details varying by region and listing. Launch materials describe a retail package that may include physical photographs, a Blue Knees story book, art cards and a song sheet; verify the exact edition rather than assuming every copy contains those extras. The developer currently lists collector’s editions for these platforms but marks its collector’s edition sold out. The physical photographs included with some editions are collectibles, not gameplay film. Progress uses the in-game camera and its virtual supply; buying a real instant camera or real film cannot solve a puzzle.

How should a beginner approach the whole campaign?
Use Normal Mode, search before advancing, and treat each room as a set of evidence rather than a list of objects to click. When you find a number or arrangement, record how the game asked you to derive it. When a mechanism refuses to move, inspect the developed print and look for the camera target that completes the state change. Keep inventory space available, retrieve required tools before long routes, and photograph Blue Knees promptly when that later encounter begins.
The game’s creator, Alexis Di Stefano, said, “We built MADiSON to be felt, not just played,” in the October 2026 developer update. That design intent explains why patient observation matters as much as fast movement: the camera, changing rooms and hostile encounters are all parts of the same investigation.

Can I follow an old MADiSON walkthrough without changing anything?
Use an older walkthrough to identify an interaction type, but verify every value in your own save. A code, portrait order or clock reading shown in that guide may belong to a different puzzle roll, and a photograph can change the state you are trying to reproduce.

No. The camera and film are virtual gameplay systems. Physical photographs included with some retail editions are collectibles and do not supply shots for the in-game camera.
What does a missing photography zone mean in POSSESSION Mode?
It means the game does not visually mark the places where a photograph is expected. You must infer the target from environmental evidence, which is one reason POSSESSION is better suited to a replay than a first attempt.
Is The Maxwells’ Curse part of the current story?
