For a MacBook Pro that will run local AI experiments alongside creative apps, 48GB of unified memory is a practical target for many people. Consider 64GB or more if you expect to use larger local models, demanding creative projects, or several memory-intensive apps at once. There is no universal requirement: the right capacity depends on the exact model and workload, and Apple does not publish a single memory recommendation for this combination.

Apple calls this capacity unified memory; “RAM” is the familiar search term, but the important buying question is how much memory the whole workload will have available. The recommendations below are workload-based guidance, not benchmark results or guarantees that a particular model will fit.

How much MacBook Pro memory do you need for local AI and creative apps?

For regular creative work plus local AI experimentation, start by comparing 48GB configurations. A 24GB model may suit lighter use, while 64GB or more is worth considering when you plan to run larger models, work on demanding projects, or keep several intensive applications open together. Those are practical recommendations inferred from Apple’s available configurations and published app requirements—not tested thresholds.

The workload matters as much as the number on the configuration page. A local model’s size, quantization and context length affect its memory demand; creative work varies with the application, project complexity and media. The operating system and other open apps also need room. Because those demands can overlap, a setup that is comfortable for one task may feel constrained when several tasks run at once.

There is no authoritative model-by-model memory table here that can say exactly which local model fits a particular MacBook Pro configuration. Before choosing a capacity, check the documentation for the specific model and runtime you intend to use, as well as the requirements for your creative applications.

What does Apple’s memory specification tell you?

Apple’s current MacBook Pro technical specifications list M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations with multiple unified-memory capacities, including 48GB and, for specified M5 Max configurations, up to 128GB. The available options depend on the chip and model; a listed capacity is not necessarily available in every screen size or chip configuration. Check the exact configuration you intend to buy.

Apple also publishes memory bandwidth by chip. Capacity and bandwidth describe different parts of the choice: capacity tells you how much unified memory is available, while bandwidth is another published chip specification to compare. Neither specification alone establishes how quickly a particular local model or creative project will run. No combined-workload benchmark is available here.

Storage capacity is a separate consideration. It affects how much room you have for applications, project files and other data, but it is not a substitute for unified memory. When comparing configurations, account for both the memory available to active work and the storage needed for the files you keep on the Mac.

Is 24GB enough for Final Cut Pro and local AI?

It can be a reasonable entry configuration for mostly creative work and modest local AI experiments, if 24GB is offered on the exact MacBook Pro model you want. It is not a promise that every model, project or combination of apps will fit comfortably.

Apple’s Final Cut Pro technical specifications list “8GB of memory (16GB recommended).” That is the app’s published requirement, not a recommendation for running local AI at the same time. Apple’s Motion specifications also list “8GB of memory (16GB recommended).” These figures help establish the apps’ stated baseline, but they do not describe a combined workload or replace checking the requirements of other software in your setup.

Think of 24GB as a choice for controlled, lighter use rather than generous headroom for every future task. It is most defensible when you have a specific modest workload in mind, do not expect to combine several demanding tasks regularly, and have checked the relevant software documentation. If you are buying primarily to avoid managing memory pressure across mixed workloads, compare the 48GB tier before committing.

Should you get 48GB or 64GB?

Choose 48GB as a practical middle target for regular creative work alongside local AI experiments. Consider 64GB or more when larger models, more demanding projects, or heavy multitasking are central to your work. Neither capacity is a universal cutoff: workload details and the options available for your selected chip and screen size still matter.

Memory choice A reasonable fit What to verify
24GB Mostly creative apps with light, modest local AI experiments. That the exact MacBook Pro configuration offers 24GB, and that your chosen model and apps suit a limited combined workload.
48GB Regular photo or video work alongside local AI experimentation; a practical middle target for many mixed-use buyers. The chip, screen size, storage and bandwidth of the specific configuration. This is an editorial recommendation, not a measured performance result.
64GB or more Larger local models, demanding creative projects, or frequent multitasking across memory-intensive applications. Which capacities are actually offered with your chosen chip and model, and what the model and app documentation require.
Up to 128GB Available in specified M5 Max configurations, rather than across every MacBook Pro. Apple’s current specifications for the exact configuration; do not assume this capacity is available in every size or chip tier.

Use the higher tier to address a real workload rather than treating a larger number as a guarantee of faster work. Capacity can provide more room for concurrent tasks, but Apple’s published specifications do not establish a specific speed increase for a particular AI or creative workflow. Check the chip/GPU class and memory bandwidth as well as capacity, and look at storage and screen size when comparing configurations.

How should you estimate your own workload?

Make the decision around the work you actually expect to do, not only the largest task you might try once. List the local model and runtime, the creative apps and project types, and which of them must remain open at the same time. Then compare the exact MacBook Pro configurations available for the chip and screen size you are considering.

  1. Name the local AI workload. Identify the model and runtime you plan to use. Check their documentation for memory guidance, and note the model size, quantization and context length relevant to your intended use. Do not rely on a generic RAM figure when those details differ.
  2. Describe the creative work. Record which apps you use and the kind of project or media you handle. Apple’s published minimum and recommended figures for Final Cut Pro and Motion describe those apps’ requirements; they do not specify the capacity for your project plus a local model.
  3. Mark what runs together. Separate tasks you perform one at a time from the apps and processes you expect to keep active concurrently. A mixed workload should be evaluated as a combination, not by adding the minimum requirements of two apps and assuming that produces a comfortable recommendation.
  4. Compare real configurations. Check Apple’s technical specifications for the exact chip and screen size. Compare unified-memory options and published bandwidth, then account for the storage capacity you need for applications and projects.
  5. Choose a tier based on the pressure points. Light, occasional experiments may make 24GB reasonable; regular mixed creative and AI work points toward 48GB; larger models, demanding projects and frequent intensive multitasking make 64GB or more worth considering. Treat these as decision guidance, not guaranteed fit thresholds.

If you cannot identify the specific model or runtime yet, avoid treating a capacity recommendation as a compatibility guarantee. First narrow down the software and workload; then consult their current documentation. This is particularly important if your decision depends on running a particular model locally.

Why don’t Final Cut Pro’s requirements answer the AI question?

App requirements answer a narrower question: what Apple lists for that application, not what a Mac needs for the application plus a local model and other open tasks. Apple’s stated 8GB minimum and 16GB recommendation for Final Cut Pro—and the same figures for Motion—are useful baselines, but they do not define a comfortable mixed-workload configuration.

Feature support has another layer. Apple’s Final Cut Pro release notes identify requirements for particular features, including Apple-silicon and macOS requirements; some features may also require internet access. The notes list Final Cut Pro 12.4 as released on September 29, 2026. Check the requirements for the specific feature and current version you plan to use: memory capacity alone does not establish feature availability.

What should you check before ordering?

MacBook Pro memory options vary with chip and model, so verify the actual configuration rather than relying on a general list of capacities. Apple’s current specifications are the relevant place to confirm what is offered; product availability and requirements can change, and specifications may vary by geography and configuration.

  • Exact model and chip: Confirm that the desired memory capacity is offered with that chip and screen size.
  • Memory bandwidth: Compare the published figure for the chips you are considering, without treating it as a workload benchmark.
  • Software and feature requirements: Check current documentation for your local-model runtime and the specific creative-app features you need.
  • Project storage: Make sure the internal storage capacity suits your applications and project files; memory and storage serve different purposes.
  • Concurrent use: Decide whether your normal workflow involves switching between tasks or running several demanding apps at once.

For example, a buyer who edits video and occasionally experiments with a modest local model can reasonably begin by comparing 48GB configurations, then check whether 24GB would suffice for the specific, limited workflow. A buyer who expects to use a larger model while keeping demanding creative projects and other intensive apps active should compare 64GB or more—but should still confirm availability and consult the software documentation rather than assuming a precise model-fit threshold.

What can’t a memory number tell you?

A capacity label cannot tell you which local models will work well, how a particular project will perform, or whether an individual feature is supported. Those questions depend on the exact model and runtime, workload settings, app and macOS requirements, and the chip configuration. Apple’s specification page establishes available hardware options and bandwidth; its app specifications establish stated app requirements. Neither is a benchmark for the combined workload.

That distinction is why a single figure should not be advertised as “the RAM you need” for everyone. Use 48GB as a practical starting point for regular mixed use, move upward when the work you have identified is more demanding, and confirm the relevant software requirements before paying for a configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does MacBook Pro unified memory count as RAM?

Yes. Apple uses the term “unified memory” for the capacity shown in MacBook Pro specifications, while many buyers search for RAM. When comparing models, use the unified-memory capacity Apple lists for that exact configuration.

Can I upgrade MacBook Pro memory later?

The supplied Apple specifications describe memory as part of each MacBook Pro configuration, but do not establish an upgrade path for every model. Confirm upgradeability for the exact model before purchase rather than assuming you can add capacity later.
