Short answer: The 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max is exceptionally fast and has an excellent Mini-LED display, but Notebookcheck’s August 27, 2026 review found a serious limitation under sustained combined CPU-and-GPU work: the battery fell from 100% to 88% in one hour while the notebook was connected to its included 140 W adapter. The reviewer repeated the test with a 180 W adapter and saw the same behavior. That makes the power supply insufficient for that particular sustained-load scenario, not proof that every MacBook Pro 16 behaves identically. For light work, the review measured 18.5 hours of Wi-Fi runtime at 150 nits, so this is a workload-specific power verdict rather than a general battery-life failure.

What is the MacBook Pro 16 M5 Max verdict?

The review verdict is mixed but clear: buy this notebook for its performance, screen and light-use endurance, but do not assume that a higher-wattage USB-C adapter will stop battery drain during long, combined processor and graphics workloads. Notebookcheck’s review unit delivered strong performance and quiet everyday operation, yet its battery level declined while plugged in during the reviewer’s sustained-load test.

The reviewer summarizes the trade-off with the phrase “Excellent performance, insufficient PSU.” Here, PSU means the power-supply capacity available to the computer under load. The finding is bounded to one 16-inch 2026 configuration and the stated test conditions; it is not an independently confirmed Apple specification or a guarantee that every unit will show the same percentage decline.

Question Review-based answer
Is it fast? Yes. Notebookcheck reports excellent system performance from the M5 Max configuration it tested.
Does it lose battery while plugged in? In the reviewer’s one-hour combined-workload test, the battery fell from 100% to 88% with the included 140 W adapter connected.
Does a 180 W adapter fix that behavior? No improvement was reported in the reviewer’s 180 W test.
Is battery life good for lighter use? The review measured 18.5 hours in a Wi-Fi test at 150 nits, plus nearly seven hours at maximum SDR brightness.
Is it quiet? The review characterizes everyday operation as quiet; its sustained-load behavior is a separate question.

Why did the battery fall while the laptop was plugged in?

The battery decline occurred during sustained combined workloads, where the processor and graphics hardware draw power for an extended period. Notebookcheck connected the computer to the supplied 140 W adapter, started its combined workload, and recorded a drop from a full charge to 88% after one hour. That is a 12-percentage-point decline in that test, not a measured 12% decline for all forms of use.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A notebook can continue operating when its components temporarily need more power than the adapter can provide, because the battery supplies the shortfall. If the imbalance persists, the battery level can fall even though the charging cable remains connected. The review demonstrates that behavior in its test setup; it does not establish the exact power-management policy Apple uses or prove that the same limit applies to every application.

What workload was involved?

The source describes a combined CPU-and-GPU stress workload rather than web browsing, office work or a short export. That distinction matters. A brief burst can be covered by adapter and battery reserves, while a long render, code build, simulation or other parallel CPU/GPU job can maintain a much higher draw.

The review also reports separate processor and combined-load measurements. Under sustained processor load, the chip could draw up to 75 W and then level off at 70 W. In the combined CPU/GPU stress test, total draw reached up to 114 W before settling at 70 W. These are measurements from the review unit and protocols; they should not be merged into a single universal “M5 Max wattage” figure.

Will a 180 W charger prevent battery drain?

Not according to this review. Notebookcheck says it repeated the test with a 180 W adapter and observed the same battery behavior, so buying a larger adapter is not a demonstrated fix.

The result does not mean that every third-party adapter is unsuitable, nor does it answer compatibility, cable or regional charging questions. It means only that increasing the adapter rating from the included 140 W unit to the 180 W unit used by the reviewer did not change the measured outcome in that workload. Confirm current adapter and USB-C requirements with Apple before purchasing any replacement.

What the adapter result does and does not prove

  • It does show: the reviewed MacBook Pro 16 continued to draw from its battery under the stated sustained combined load with two higher-capacity power setups.
  • It does not show: that every 16-inch M5 Max notebook drains at the same rate, that all applications create the same demand, or that a different cable, firmware version or system configuration would behave identically.
  • It does not justify: treating a 180 W adapter as a proven remedy or promising a particular battery percentage after an hour of work.

How does the cooling and power behavior affect performance?

Notebookcheck reports that the chip reached up to 75 W during sustained processor testing and then stabilized at 70 W. In the combined CPU/GPU stress run, power rose as high as 114 W before also leveling at 70 W. The reviewer interprets the sustained 70 W level as a cooling limit under those conditions.

“Cooling limit” is the reviewer’s test interpretation, not a manufacturer-published specification established by the available evidence. It suggests that the notebook manages long-running heat and power by settling at a lower sustained level after the initial peak. The practical consequence is that short bursts can look different from an hour-long workload, and benchmark results that finish quickly should not be used to predict an all-day render.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The battery decline and the 70 W sustained result describe related but different observations. One is the battery percentage measured while connected to power; the other is the chip’s behavior after a stress test settles. Neither alone tells you the performance of every professional application.

How good are the display and everyday experience?

The review is positive about the 16.2-inch Mini-LED display and describes everyday operation as quiet. Those strengths matter if your work mixes photo or video review, writing, development and general desktop use rather than continuous maximum CPU and GPU utilization.

Mini-LED is particularly relevant for users who value high-contrast images and HDR-capable workflows, but the available data does not provide a colorimeter result, peak-brightness figure or a separate HDR measurement. Do not infer a specific brightness or color-gamut number from the display type alone. The supported conclusion is that the reviewer considered the panel high quality and identified it as a major strength.

Quiet everyday operation should also be read in context. The review’s wording concerns normal use, while the power and cooling measurements come from sustained stress. Fan noise, surface temperature and power behavior during your own workload can differ from the light-use impression.

How long does the battery last in the review?

Notebookcheck measured 18.5 hours in its Wi-Fi battery test at 150 nits. At maximum SDR brightness, it reported nearly seven hours. Both numbers belong to that review’s protocols and should not be presented as guaranteed runtimes for video editing, 3D work, software compilation or other sustained loads.

Review measurement Condition How to interpret it
18.5 hours Wi-Fi test at 150 nits A light-use endurance result under a controlled brightness and wireless protocol.
Nearly seven hours Maximum SDR brightness Shows the cost of driving the display harder; it is not a sustained CPU/GPU result.
12 percentage points lost in one hour Combined workload, connected to the included 140 W adapter A plugged-in sustained-load result, not a battery-runtime estimate on its own.

The apparent contradiction—very long Wi-Fi endurance but a falling battery under load—is the central point of the review. Light workloads stay within the adapter and system’s operating envelope. A continuous combined workload can exceed what the system supplies from the adapter alone, causing the battery to supplement it.

Who should buy the 16-inch M5 Max model?

This model makes the most sense for buyers who prioritize maximum portable performance and a large, high-quality display, and who can tolerate the possibility that an unusually demanding workload may consume battery even at a desk. The review’s strong performance result and quiet everyday behavior support that use case.

It is a good fit if you:

  • Need the M5 Max configuration’s high performance for professional applications.
  • Prefer a 16.2-inch Mini-LED screen for a larger workspace.
  • Spend much of the day in light or mixed workloads where the 18.5-hour Wi-Fi result is directionally relevant.
  • Can schedule the most demanding jobs around the possibility of battery draw while connected.

Consider another setup if you:

  • Run CPU-and-GPU workloads continuously and require the battery to remain at 100% whenever power is connected.
  • Need a tested, guaranteed solution based solely on buying a higher-wattage adapter.
  • Expect the review’s Wi-Fi runtime to represent heavy rendering or simulation.
  • Require extensive user maintenance: Notebookcheck says there are practically no maintenance options.

How should you evaluate the 16-inch model against a smaller configuration?

The available review evidence does not provide a controlled 14-inch-versus-16-inch benchmark, battery or adapter comparison. You can still make a sound choice by matching the machine to your workload rather than assuming that the larger chassis removes the power limitation.

What configuration did Notebookcheck review?

The tested machine was an Apple MacBook Pro 16 2026 with an M5 Max chip, 48 GB of memory and a 2 TB SSD. The review is dated August 27, 2026. Those details identify the measured configuration; they do not confirm that every regional listing uses the same memory, storage, adapter bundle or firmware.

The review mentioned availability of that 48 GB/2 TB unit through Amazon at the time of publication. That dated statement does not verify today’s price, stock, configuration, warranty terms or purchase conditions. Check the live regional listing and Apple’s current documentation before placing an order.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Match the configuration: Confirm that the listing actually includes the M5 Max, 48 GB memory and 2 TB SSD if that is the configuration whose review results you are using.
  2. Define your workload: Separate light use from sustained combined CPU/GPU jobs. Ask whether a falling battery while connected would disrupt your workflow.
  3. Verify power guidance: Check Apple’s current regional adapter and USB-C requirements instead of assuming that a 180 W unit will solve the reviewed behavior.
  4. Check live commercial terms: Confirm current price, stock, return period and warranty. The review’s retailer mention is historical.
  5. Plan for service: Because the review reports practically no maintenance options, investigate authorized repair availability in your region before purchase.

What can you do if your MacBook loses charge under load?

First establish whether the behavior is limited to a sustained combined workload or also appears during ordinary use. The review only documents the former. Record the application, connected adapter, cable, battery percentage, display brightness and elapsed time so that a service provider can reproduce the conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use the adapter and cable supplied with the computer while comparing results, then test only accessories that Apple identifies as compatible.
  • Close unnecessary CPU- or GPU-intensive applications and repeat the task to distinguish workload demand from a general charging problem.
  • Check whether the battery percentage falls only during the active job and resumes charging afterward.
  • Contact Apple or an authorized service provider if the battery declines during ordinary light use, the adapter repeatedly disconnects, or the computer reports a charging or battery-health warning.

Do not treat an isolated percentage drop during a demanding job as proof of a defective battery, and do not treat the review’s result as proof that every unit is operating normally. A diagnosis requires your machine’s software, hardware, adapter and workload details.

Is the MacBook Pro 16 M5 Max worth it despite the power-supply limitation?

For performance-focused buyers, it can be. The review combines excellent performance, a high-quality 16.2-inch Mini-LED display, quiet everyday use and strong light-use battery life. The qualification is important: under the reviewer’s sustained combined workload, the battery dropped 12 percentage points in an hour even while connected to 140 W, and a 180 W adapter did not change that result.

Choose it when the strengths match your daily work and you can accept workload-specific battery draw. Avoid making the purchase on the assumption that a bigger charger guarantees a full battery during continuous CPU-and-GPU stress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does battery drain while plugged in mean the MacBook Pro battery is defective?

Not necessarily. The documented result occurred during a specific sustained combined workload on one review unit, and the available evidence does not establish a battery defect or a universal behavior. If charge loss also occurs during light use, document the conditions and seek a device-specific diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the 16-inch M5 Max as a desktop replacement for long renders?

The review does not prohibit that use, but it shows that a long combined CPU/GPU job may draw down the battery even with external power attached. For unattended renders, monitor battery level and temperature rather than assuming the adapter alone will maintain 100% charge.

Is the 18.5-hour battery figure realistic for video editing?

It was measured in a Wi-Fi test at 150 nits, not during an editing export or color-intensive timeline. Video-editing runtime will depend on codec, effects, display brightness, peripherals and whether the workload keeps both processor and graphics hardware busy.

Should I buy the 48 GB/2 TB configuration specifically?

That is the configuration Notebookcheck tested, so it is the closest match to the reported measurements. Current regional configurations and prices were not verified here; compare the live specification and your application’s memory and storage requirements before ordering.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
