No: longer software support is valuable, but it should not by itself justify paying more for a premium phone. Google and Samsung now promise long update windows on recent flagships; the better question is whether the phone’s battery, repair options, performance, cameras, price and ecosystem suit the number of years you actually plan to use it.
What a long support promise does—and does not—buy you
Software support can keep a phone eligible for operating-system features and security fixes after many competing devices have stopped receiving updates. Google says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of updates, counted from each model’s first availability on the US Google Store. Its announcement defines Pixel 8’s seven-year commitment as Android OS updates, security updates and Feature Drops. Google’s Pixel update policy lists five years for older Pixel generations. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 environmental report specifies seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. Samsung’s S26 announcement likewise promises seven OS generations and seven security years, measured from global launch. Those are different ways of defining the support window: Google starts the clock at US Google Store availability; Samsung states global launch for the S26. An update promise is not a promise that every component will remain fast, intact or economical to repair for that entire period. Batteries age, screens crack, parts may be difficult to obtain, and newer apps or camera expectations can make an older phone feel limiting. Support extends software eligibility; it cannot guarantee the rest of the ownership experience.

How long do you really expect to keep the phone?
The Associated Press reported a typical smartphone replacement cycle of four years in 2026. That makes a seven-year promise most consequential for someone who expects to keep a phone well beyond the typical cycle, give it to another person, or resell it later. Think in terms of your own horizon, not the largest number on a product page. A long commitment can reduce the risk of being forced to replace a still-useful phone because it no longer receives security updates. But it does not automatically make the higher upfront price worthwhile, and there is no established universal dollar value for an extra year of support. The value depends on whether you keep or pass on the device, whether it remains usable, and whether you can repair it when needed.

Compare the whole ownership equation
Use support duration as one row in the comparison, not the verdict. Put the specific model and your intended use side by side:

| OS and security-update commitments | Check the separate terms and what starts the support clock; a seven-year figure alone can conceal different start dates or definitions. |
| Battery capacity and replacement route | A battery that no longer suits your daily use can end practical ownership before software support does. Check whether battery replacement is available for your exact model and location. |
| Repairability and parts access | A cracked screen or worn battery is only manageable if repair services or parts are accessible and the cost makes sense. |
| Performance and hardware headroom | Consider whether the processor, camera system, display and storage will meet your needs several years from now, not just on purchase day. |
| Ecosystem fit | Apps, accessories, services and the devices you already own can make switching brands inconvenient or costly. |
| Price and later use | Compare what you pay with the years you expect to use it, plus any realistic resale or hand-me-down plan. Do not assume a longer promise guarantees a particular resale value. |
Repairability belongs alongside update length, not beneath it. Samsung’s S24 report describes a self-repair program in the US; availability and parts access should be checked for the particular model and market. Fairphone’s impact report is a useful example of treating repairable hardware and software support together: the company says it aims for eight years of support for Fairphone Gen. 6. Pixel, Galaxy or iPhone for a long ownership period?
Google Pixel
For Pixel 8 and later, Google offers a clearly documented seven-year update commitment, with the clock beginning at first US Google Store availability. Older Pixel models listed on Google’s support page have five years. This makes Pixel’s stated policy straightforward to compare, but the support term alone does not establish whether a particular Pixel is the best fit for your camera preferences, repair needs or budget.
Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s S24 report documents seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates; its S26 launch material states the same duration from global launch. Confirm the policy for the exact Galaxy model you are considering rather than assuming every Samsung phone has the flagship commitment. Consider repair access and hardware suitability along with the update term.

Apple iPhone
The available Apple longevity material discusses trade-in retention and points to Apple security releases, but it does not establish a single fixed support duration that applies universally to every iPhone. Compare the specific model against Apple’s current iOS compatibility information and security documentation rather than assigning every iPhone a guaranteed number of years. When is paying for a premium phone worth it?
- You keep phones for many years: A documented long update window can matter, especially if you also expect to repair or hand down the phone.
- You need particular high-end hardware: A premium model may be justified by its cameras, display, performance or storage, if those benefits matter to your daily use.
- You replace phones often: A long support promise may have less practical value if you will upgrade well before it expires; compare price and the features you will use during your ownership.
- You prioritize repair over replacement: Verify battery and parts routes for your location before purchase. A long software commitment cannot compensate for a device you cannot reasonably keep in working order.
- You are considering a less expensive model: Compare its exact support policy and hardware against the premium phone. Long updates are no longer, by themselves, a reason to assume only a flagship will remain supported for years.
A practical way to decide
- Set your likely replacement horizon. Decide whether this is a two-to-four-year phone, a long-term personal device, or one you expect to pass on.
- Verify support for the exact model. Read the manufacturer’s model-specific commitment, including whether it covers OS upgrades, security updates and other software features, and when the clock starts.
- Check repair options where you live. Look for battery and screen service or parts for that model, not just a general brand repair program.
- Judge hardware for your needs. Choose the camera, performance, display and storage you will want to live with, rather than assuming updates will make old hardware feel new.
- Compare total fit, not a headline number. Weigh price, ecosystem, likely resale or hand-me-down use, and repair access against the support window.
