Heavy long-weekend traffic was reported in Manali, on the Kalka–Shimla approach, and across popular Uttarakhand destinations including Mussoorie and Kainchi Dham in reports published October 2–3, 2026. Uttarakhand’s reported traffic and parking arrangements were specifically for October 2–4; they are not confirmation of current conditions or instructions after those dates.

Where traffic was reported

The reports describe congestion at several destinations and routes, not a single centrally measured traffic event. No verified region-wide vehicle count was given.

  • Manali and the Kalka–Shimla approach: ET Now reported heavy traffic in Manali and long delays on the Kalka–Shimla route on October 3. These were news observations, not an official live route-status update. ET Now’s October 3 report also described congestion between Joshimath and Marwari, another Uttarakhand route.
  • Mussoorie and other Uttarakhand destinations: NDTV India reported on October 2 that Uttarakhand Police had prepared a special traffic and route plan for Mussoorie, Nainital, Haridwar, and Rishikesh for October 2–4. The report described approaches to Mussoorie from Dehradun, return routes, and police deployment at duty and diversion points. Read NDTV India’s report on the plan.
  • Kainchi Dham approaches: Daily Jagran reported on October 2, citing Uttarakhand Police, that parking and shuttle arrangements were set for visitors approaching via Bhimtal and Bhowali. Read Daily Jagran’s account of the arrangements.

What the reported Kainchi Dham plan said

Daily Jagran said the special arrangements were intended to continue through the night of October 4, 2026. The report described these options and restrictions:

Approach Reported parking and onward travel
Via Bhimtal Visitors were directed to park at Bhimtal Vikas Bhawan and continue to Kainchi Dham using local shuttles or public transport.
Via Gethia–Nainital Bhowali Sanatorium was identified as the parking point, with shuttle transport onward.
Kainchi Dham area Private cabs, taxis, and two-wheeler taxis were reported restricted. Some four-wheelers could be diverted via Ramgarh and Khutani roads.

These details are a dated news account of the October 2–4 arrangements, not standing access rules. Check with Uttarakhand Police or the relevant district authority before relying on a parking location, shuttle, diversion, or vehicle restriction for another date.

What the reported delays do—and do not—show

ET Now’s October 3 report described a queue of approximately seven kilometres between Joshimath and Marwari. It also said some travellers took six or more hours on a route it described as normally taking three and a half to four hours. Those are outlet-reported observations, not official traffic statistics or a reliable estimate for other journeys.

Likewise, the Mussoorie route plan reported by NDTV India is evidence of a date-bounded police arrangement, while congestion descriptions for Manali and the Shimla approach are news accounts. None of the reports establishes synchronized live traffic, current closures, or updated access rules.

Before travelling, verify the current route and access rules

  1. Check current advisories from the local police or district authority responsible for your destination. A report about a weekend plan does not show that it remains active.
  2. For Kainchi Dham, confirm whether designated parking, shuttle service, and vehicle restrictions apply on your travel date before setting out.
  3. For Manali or the Kalka–Shimla route, seek a current local update rather than treating reported holiday congestion as a live traffic map or closure notice.
  4. Follow posted diversions and use designated parking where authorities direct. NDTV India’s account of the Uttarakhand plan said police urged travellers to obey traffic rules, use designated parking, and cooperate with diversions.
