Yes—you can run a useful local large language model (LLM) on an older laptop without paying for an API or owning a dedicated GPU. The practical starting point is a 1B–4B model in a desktop app or lightweight runtime, then moving up only if your available memory allows it. Five projects stand out for different needs: Ollama for terminal commands and scripts, LM Studio for a polished graphical interface, Jan for an open-source offline chat app, GPT4All for private document questions, and llama.cpp for technical control over model files and performance settings.
These tools are free to install, but model downloads consume disk space and inference speed depends on your CPU, memory, thermal limits and model size. The smallest model that answers your real questions well is usually the best choice on a slow machine.
What can a slow laptop realistically run?
A slow laptop can usually handle a small, quantized model locally, especially when it has 8 GB or more of available RAM and you choose a 1B–4B model. “Available RAM” means memory left for the model after the operating system and other applications are using their share; an 8 GB computer does not necessarily have 8 GB available to an LLM.
Ollama’s quickstart documentation gives a useful baseline: at least 8 GB of RAM available for 7B models, 16 GB for 13B models and 32 GB for 33B models. Those figures describe memory requirements, not guaranteed speed or answer quality. A larger model may produce better answers but can become painfully slow when the laptop has to swap data to disk.

Small model examples
| Example model | Published download size | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Llama 3.2 1B | 1.3 GB | A sensible first test on a memory-constrained laptop. |
| Gemma 2B | 1.6 GB | Still small enough for many 8 GB systems, subject to available RAM. |
| Llama 3.2 3B | 2.0 GB | More capable for general chat, but leaves less headroom for other programs. |
The sizes above are the figures shown in Ollama’s 2024-era quickstart examples. Runtime memory can exceed the download size because the application also needs space for the model’s working data, conversation context and operating-system overhead.
Which local LLM project fits your laptop and workflow?
All five projects can keep model inference on your computer, but they differ sharply in interface, document tools, APIs and how much hardware control they expose.
| Project | Best fit | Interface | Offline and privacy behavior | Documents or API | Hardware control |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ollama | Terminal users, scripts and local services | Command line | Its FAQ says it runs locally and conversation data does not leave your machine. | Local REST API | Moderate; model choice and runtime are simple. |
| LM Studio | People who want a polished desktop app | Graphical interface | Can operate entirely offline after model files are present. | Document chat, MCP connections and OpenAI-compatible local endpoints | Moderate; exposes a friendly subset of runtime choices. |
| Jan | An open-source, ChatGPT-style offline desktop experience | Graphical interface | Described as running entirely offline. | Chat with documents and files; OpenAI-compatible API server | Moderate. |
| GPT4All | Private questions about local documents | Graphical app and Python SDK | Documentation says no API calls or GPUs are required. | Local document chat with Nomic embedding models | CPU, Apple Silicon Metal and GPU execution are supported. |
| llama.cpp | Developers optimizing constrained hardware | Library and low-level tools | Uses local model files; the exact network behavior depends on the wrapper you build. | Embeddable inference foundation and GGUF execution | Highest control over quantization, context size and CPU/GPU layers. |
Is Ollama the best starting point for a slow laptop?
Ollama is the strongest first choice when you are comfortable typing a command and may later connect the model to scripts or another application. Its quickstart is built around a simple ollama run command, and it lists small models such as Llama 3.2 1B, Llama 3.2 3B and Gemma 2B.
How to start
- Install Ollama for your operating system.
- Open a terminal and run
ollama runfollowed by the model name shown in the model list or quickstart. - Begin with the 1B or 2B example if the laptop has limited memory. Move to a 3B or larger model only after checking that the system remains responsive.
- Use Ollama’s local REST API when a script, editor or another local tool needs to send prompts programmatically.
Ollama’s FAQ explicitly states that it runs locally and that conversation data does not leave your machine. That describes conversation processing; you still need to download model files while online, and any separate application connected to the API has its own data-handling behavior.

Is LM Studio the easiest graphical option?
LM Studio is the best fit if you want to avoid terminal commands. Its documentation lists macOS, Windows and Linux support, along with model search, downloads, a chat interface, local document chat, MCP connections and OpenAI-compatible local endpoints.
Typical workflow
- Install LM Studio for your laptop’s operating system.
- Use its model-search screen to find a small model. Filter your first choice by size and select a file that leaves room for the operating system.
- Download the model while connected to the internet, then open it in the chat interface.
- Test a short prompt before loading a long document or conversation. Long context consumes additional memory.
- After the model files are present, use the application offline; the documentation says LM Studio can operate entirely offline at that point.
Choose LM Studio when visual controls, document chat or a local endpoint matter more than shell scripting. It is also a convenient way to compare a few small models without learning a separate command for each one.
Is Jan a good open-source alternative to a hosted chatbot?
Jan is aimed at users who want an open-source desktop chat experience that runs entirely offline. Hugging Face’s local-app documentation describes it as an open-source ChatGPT alternative with a user-friendly interface.
What Jan adds
- A familiar conversation interface instead of a terminal.
- Chat with documents and files stored on the laptop.
- An OpenAI-compatible API server for local applications that already speak that API format.
- Offline operation after the required model files are available.
Jan is a good compromise between simplicity and control: less intimidating than a low-level library, but more suitable for open-source-minded users who want an API later. On an 8 GB laptop, keep the first model small and close other memory-heavy programs before starting a long document session.

Is GPT4All best for private document questions?
GPT4All is designed for running LLMs privately on everyday desktops and laptops. Its documentation says that no API calls or GPUs are required, and its Nomic embedding models support local documents and files in chat.
Hardware support
The official FAQ lists CPU, Apple Silicon Metal and GPU execution. On a conventional older laptop, CPU execution is the relevant path; AVX or AVX2 support and enough RAM to load the selected model are required. If the application reports that the processor lacks the needed instruction set, choose a compatible build or use another project rather than forcing a larger model.
Document workflow
- Install GPT4All and download a model that fits the laptop’s available memory.
- Open the document-chat feature and add only the files needed for the question.
- Ask focused questions and verify important answers against the source document; local retrieval helps find passages but does not guarantee factual interpretation.
- Keep the model and documents on the laptop if the goal is a private, offline workflow.
GPT4All is the most natural pick when the main task is searching notes, manuals or personal files rather than building an automated service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen is llama.cpp worth the extra technical work?
llama.cpp is the choice for users who need direct control over how a model runs. It is an inference foundation used by GPT4All’s Python SDK, and LM Studio documents execution of GGUF model files through llama.cpp.

What you can tune
- Model files and quantization: select a GGUF variant that trades some precision for a smaller memory footprint.
- Context size: limit the amount of conversation or document text held at once to reduce memory pressure.
- CPU and GPU layers: decide how much work stays on the processor and, when supported, how much is offloaded.
- Embedding or application integration: embed the runtime in a custom program instead of relying on a finished chat application.
This flexibility is valuable on an old laptop because you can make deliberate compromises instead of accepting an application’s defaults. The trade-off is setup complexity: you must obtain compatible GGUF files, understand runtime options and diagnose processor, memory or build errors yourself.
How should you choose a model on 8 GB or less?
Start with the smallest model that can perform the task, then increase size only when the quality gap justifies slower responses. The following process avoids the most common mistake: downloading a model that leaves no memory for the operating system.
- Measure available memory. Close browsers and other heavy applications, then check how much RAM is actually free. Use that number rather than the laptop’s advertised total.
- Pick a 1B–4B model first. The published 1.3 GB, 1.6 GB and 2.0 GB examples provide sensible starting points, but leave extra headroom for runtime memory.
- Match the model to the task. Small models can handle concise drafting, classification, summaries and simple questions; complex reasoning, coding and long documents may require more capacity.
- Test a short prompt. Watch for swapping, fan noise, freezes and rapidly declining speed. A response that arrives slowly but steadily is preferable to a system that becomes unusable.
- Increase size cautiously. Ollama’s 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB guidance for 7B, 13B and 33B models is a useful ceiling check, not a promise that every laptop will feel fast.
How do you set up a local LLM without wasting storage or bandwidth?
Model files are downloaded once, but you may need several gigabytes for multiple models, caches and documents. Plan the download before going offline and keep only the models you actually use.
- Confirm the operating system and processor support for the project you selected.
- Ensure the laptop has enough free disk space for the model download plus temporary files; the listed 1.3 GB to 2.0 GB examples are not a complete storage budget.
- Download the application and model while online.
- Launch a short chat and record which model, context setting and runtime were used.
- Disconnect from the network or use the application’s documented offline mode when privacy requires it.
- Keep a copy of model names and settings so you can reproduce a useful configuration after an update.
What problems are most common on an old laptop?
- The app will not load the model: free memory is insufficient, the processor lacks a required instruction set, or the model format is incompatible. Close applications, choose a smaller file and check the project’s CPU requirements.
- Responses are extremely slow: the model is too large for available RAM, the context is too long, or the machine is throttling from heat. Reduce model size and context before attempting a larger upgrade.
- The laptop freezes or uses the disk constantly: the operating system is swapping. Stop the generation, close other programs and restart with a smaller model.
- Document answers miss relevant passages: add fewer, cleaner files and ask narrower questions. Retrieval tools can surface text, but the model still needs a clear prompt and may misunderstand the source.
- An API client cannot connect: confirm that the local server is running, use the endpoint format expected by the client and check the application’s own documentation. A local endpoint is not automatically reachable from another device.
Can a RAM upgrade make a bigger model practical?
Possibly, but only if the laptop accepts an upgrade and the processor, cooling and storage are adequate. Moving from less than 8 GB of available memory toward the documented 8 GB baseline can prevent swapping; it does not guarantee fast generation.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Before buying memory, verify the laptop’s memory type, whether a slot is free, the maximum supported capacity and whether the existing memory is soldered. An upgrade is optional: a smaller model and fewer open applications often provide a better result than spending money on unsupported hardware.
Which project should you choose?
- Choose Ollama when a terminal command, scripts or a local REST API are central to your workflow.
- Choose LM Studio when you want model search, a graphical chat screen and offline use with minimal setup.
- Choose Jan when an open-source, offline desktop chat app and a compatible local API are priorities.
- Choose GPT4All when private document Q&A on an everyday laptop is the main job.
- Choose llama.cpp when you need to tune GGUF files, quantization, context or CPU/GPU layers and are comfortable with technical configuration.
For most slow laptops, begin with a 1B–3B model, test it in the interface that matches your comfort level, and expand only after confirming that memory and responsiveness remain acceptable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a local LLM after disconnecting from the internet?
Yes, provided the application and model files were downloaded first. LM Studio, Jan and GPT4All document offline operation, and Ollama states that conversations run locally; a custom llama.cpp wrapper should be treated according to that wrapper’s own network behavior.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do local LLMs need a dedicated GPU?
No. GPT4All explicitly supports CPU execution and says no GPU is required, while Ollama’s small-model examples are intended as lightweight starting points. A GPU or Apple Silicon Metal path can accelerate supported setups, but it is not a prerequisite for trying a small model.
How much disk space should I reserve for a local model?
Reserve more than the model’s published download size because applications may create caches and temporary files. The example downloads range from 1.3 GB to 2.0 GB, and keeping several models or document collections requires additional space.
Why does an 8 GB laptop still struggle with a model listed for 8 GB?
The documented figure refers to RAM available to the model, not the computer’s total installed memory. The operating system, browser, context window and runtime overhead consume part of that total, so closing applications or choosing a smaller model may be necessary.
Which option is easiest for someone who has never used a terminal?
LM Studio, Jan and GPT4All provide graphical interfaces for downloading models and chatting. Ollama is better suited to command-line users, while llama.cpp requires the most technical involvement with model files and runtime settings.
