Local AI is not automatically more private, faster, or cheaper than cloud AI. It means the model generates its response on your Linux machine, so prompts can remain inside that machine when the application truly uses a local model. Cloud AI sends the request to a provider’s infrastructure, trading local hardware requirements for a network and provider-policy boundary. The right choice depends on the model, endpoint, Linux and driver stack, available memory, concurrency, and your workload. This guide shows how to verify the data path, estimate hardware fit, test performance without invented benchmarks, and choose a setup that matches your privacy and operational requirements.
What is the difference between local AI and cloud AI on Linux?
Local inference loads model files and runs computation on your own Linux computer. Cloud inference sends prompts to a hosted service, which supplies the model and performs the computation remotely. The distinction is the execution location, not a guarantee about privacy, quality, speed, or cost.
A single application ecosystem can expose both paths. Ollama documents a local server at http://localhost:11434/api and a direct cloud API at https://ollama.com/api, which requires an API key. A desktop client, script, or plugin can therefore look like the same tool while routing one request locally and another remotely.

|---|---|---|
| Where is inference performed? | On your Linux computer or a machine you control. | On the named provider’s infrastructure. |
| What leaves your machine? | Nothing from the model request if the application stays on its local endpoint; other software may still have its own telemetry or logging. | The prompt, response context, and any files sent by the client cross the network according to the provider’s current terms. |
| Hardware burden | You provide enough CPU, RAM, storage, and possibly GPU memory for the selected model and workload. | The provider supplies inference hardware; your Linux system mainly needs a compatible client and a reliable connection. |
| Latency sources | Model loading, memory pressure, local computation, and queueing. | Network round-trip, provider queueing, service load, and remote computation. |
| Maintenance | You maintain drivers, runtimes, model files, updates, and security. | You maintain the client and account while the provider maintains the serving stack. |
Use the execution location as the first question, then evaluate privacy policy, model capability, hardware fit, measured latency, maintenance, and total cost for your specific workload.

Is local AI more private than cloud AI?
Local AI can provide a smaller privacy boundary, but only when the request remains local and the application’s behavior supports that claim. Ollama’s privacy policy, updated in March 2026, says its local software does not collect, store, transmit, or access prompts, responses, or other content processed locally. That statement applies to Ollama’s local pathway, not to every Linux AI application.
What happens on Ollama’s cloud path?
The same policy describes cloud-hosted model prompts and responses as processed transiently to provide the service, not retained beyond the time needed to fulfill the request, and not used to train AI models under that policy. Treat this as a provider-specific, date-sensitive statement. Other hosted products can have different retention, training, logging, account, or regional-processing terms.
How can you confirm which path an application uses?
- Identify the model selected in the client. A model name alone does not prove where inference occurs.
- Inspect the configured server or base URL. A local Ollama connection should point to http://localhost:11434/api; direct cloud access uses https://ollama.com/api and an API key.
- Check whether the application has a separate cloud toggle, account sign-in, proxy, or remote-provider setting. Disable remote features when your policy requires local-only processing.
- Run a controlled test with network access restricted, where operationally safe, and confirm that the local workflow still functions. Do not assume that a local user interface means local inference.
- Review the application’s logs and documentation for upload, synchronization, telemetry, or plugin behavior that is separate from model inference.
What privacy can local execution not solve?
A local model protects the inference request only within the scope of the software and machine you control. A browser extension, document connector, crash reporter, shell history, shared log directory, or remote tool invoked by an agent can still expose data. Use least-privilege file access, encrypted storage, separate accounts for sensitive workloads, and an outbound-network policy appropriate to your threat model.
For cloud use, read the current terms for the exact product, account tier, data controls, and region you will use. There is no defensible universal ranking of cloud providers based on the evidence available here.
Which is faster on Linux: local or cloud AI?
Neither option is inherently faster. Local inference avoids a network round-trip but can be limited by model loading, GPU memory, system RAM, thermal limits, and competing processes. Cloud inference can use specialized serving hardware, yet network delay, provider queueing, and service load can dominate the time to first token.
Separate the latency components
- Connection latency: time for a request to reach a hosted endpoint and for the first response data to return.
- Cold-start latency: time to read model files and place weights in usable memory before generation.
- Generation throughput: how quickly tokens are produced after generation starts.
- Queueing latency: delay caused by concurrent local requests or a busy hosted service.
- End-to-end completion time: the total time for the actual prompt, context, and requested output.
Ollama’s FAQ explains that available memory affects model loading, concurrent models, parallel requests, and queuing. A machine that handles one short prompt comfortably may become slow when several users, long contexts, or multiple models compete for memory.

Why a benchmark from another computer is not enough
The retrieved documentation provides no directly comparable local-versus-cloud benchmark for Linux. Do not quote a universal tokens-per-second winner. Results vary with model architecture, quantization, context length, GPU offload, driver, runtime, prompt size, output length, network path, and provider load.

- Choose the same model family and, as closely as the services allow, the same parameter size and quantization.
- Prepare a fixed test set: a short chat prompt, a long-context prompt, a structured extraction task, and a representative production request. Remove confidential data.
- Record time to first token, total completion time, output length, errors, and whether the first request includes model loading.
- Repeat each test after a cold start and again with the model already loaded. Note concurrent users or parallel requests.
- Run the cloud test from the network where users actually work. Record connection conditions and any provider queueing.
- Compare quality and failure rates as well as speed. A faster response that needs manual correction may cost more time overall.
What hardware do you need for local AI on Linux?
There is no single GPU, VRAM, or RAM threshold for all local models. Requirements are specific to the model, runtime, quantization, context length, and number of simultaneous requests. A hosted workflow can avoid a local GPU altogether; a demanding local deployment may require substantial GPU memory.
The documented 24 GB example
NVIDIA’s NIM prerequisites list at least 24 GB of GPU memory for the documented Llama 3.1 8B Instruct profile. That figure is a minimum for that model and deployment profile, not a universal entry point for Linux local AI. A different runtime, quantization, context, or offload strategy can change the practical requirement, while a larger model can require considerably more.
GPU compatibility is a stack, not a shopping list
Ollama’s GPU documentation lists supported NVIDIA families and driver requirements. It notes driver 550 or newer for supported NVIDIA GPUs, with older compute-capability ranges requiring newer drivers. Compatibility with Ollama does not promise that a particular model will fit in memory or run at a useful speed.
NVIDIA’s CUDA Linux guide requires a CUDA-capable GPU and a supported Linux environment. For an NVIDIA NIM deployment, the documented prerequisites include Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later, Docker, the NVIDIA Container Toolkit, the CUDA SDK, and the required driver stack. Verify the exact distribution release, card, driver, and runtime instructions before installing.
What the model must fit
- Weights: the model parameters consume the base memory allocation.
- Quantization overhead: lower-precision formats can reduce memory use, but may change quality and runtime behavior.
- Context: longer prompts and conversation history increase working memory.
- Runtime overhead: the serving engine and CUDA or other backend need memory in addition to the weights.
- Concurrency: parallel requests and multiple loaded models multiply memory pressure and can create queues.
The reviewed documentation does not provide a universal RAM-to-model-size formula. Measure the selected runtime with the context and concurrency you actually intend to use rather than applying a single rule to every model.

CPU-only and mixed-memory systems
A GPU is not required for every local AI workflow. CPU inference can be useful for small or heavily quantized models, experimentation, and offline tasks, but generation speed depends on the processor, memory bandwidth, model, and context. Systems that split work between system RAM and GPU memory may run models that exceed VRAM, usually with a performance trade-off. Treat these as runtime-specific behaviors and verify them with the implementation you choose.
How do Linux distribution, drivers, and runtimes affect compatibility?
Linux support alone does not guarantee that a model runtime will work. The distribution release, kernel and libraries, GPU driver, CUDA or ROCm-style backend, container runtime, and application version must form a supported combination.
Preflight checks
- Record the distribution and release with your normal system-information tool, and compare it with the runtime’s support list.
- Identify the GPU and confirm that the installed driver recognizes it. On NVIDIA systems,
nvidia-smiis a common first check; an error or missing device must be fixed before diagnosing model behavior. - Check the runtime’s documented GPU families and driver floor. Do not infer support from a card’s brand name alone.
- For containerized deployments, verify Docker, the NVIDIA Container Toolkit, and CUDA components as a matched set.
- Confirm free GPU memory and system RAM while the machine is idle and while normal desktop or service workloads are running.
- Download a model whose size and quantization fit the measured capacity, then test one request before enabling concurrency.
Why a supported GPU can still fail
A card may appear on a runtime’s compatibility list while the selected model exceeds available memory, the driver is too old, the container cannot see the device, or another process has reserved VRAM. Compatibility means the software can communicate with the hardware under stated conditions; it is not a speed or capacity guarantee.

Start with the task, then select the smallest model that meets quality requirements and fits the target memory budget. A general chatbot, code assistant, document extractor, and vision workflow can have very different model and backend needs.
Match model size to the workload
- Simple classification or extraction: favor a compact model and short context when accuracy is sufficient.
- Long documents: budget memory for the full context, not just the model weights.
- Code generation: test on the languages, repository size, and tools your team actually uses.
- Multiple users: plan for concurrent requests and queue behavior instead of sizing for one interactive session.
- Specialized inputs: verify that the runtime supports the required modality and acceleration backend.
Quantization is a trade-off
Quantization can make a model fit in less memory and may improve throughput on constrained hardware, but lower precision can affect accuracy and compatibility. Compare representative outputs, not only whether the model loads. Keep the original model identifier, quantization format, context setting, and runtime version with your test notes so results remain reproducible.
What are the common local-AI failure modes on Linux?
The application unexpectedly uses the cloud
Check the configured base URL, account sign-in, model selector, and API key. A local interface can still call a hosted endpoint, especially when a cloud feature is enabled by default. Set the explicit local endpoint and verify behavior with a controlled network test.

The GPU is not detected
Check the driver first, then the runtime’s supported GPU and compute-capability list. For container deployments, confirm that the container has device access and that the toolkit and CUDA components match the driver requirements. Updating only the application rarely fixes a missing or incompatible driver.

Stop other GPU workloads, reduce context length, lower concurrency, choose a smaller or more aggressively quantized model, or use a runtime-supported CPU or mixed-memory mode. Do not confuse a successful model download with a successful load; weights, context, and runtime overhead must fit at inference time.
Generation becomes slow after adding users
Inspect memory pressure and queueing. Multiple parallel requests can require additional working memory, and a runtime may serialize or queue work when capacity is exhausted. Measure one request, then increase concurrency gradually while recording latency and errors.
The NIM installation does not meet prerequisites
Use a supported Ubuntu release and install the documented Docker, NVIDIA Container Toolkit, CUDA SDK, and driver prerequisites for that NIM profile. The 24 GB figure applies to the cited Llama 3.1 8B Instruct deployment; changing the model or deployment path changes the requirements.

How should you evaluate cost and availability?
The available evidence does not establish comparable prices or a universal cost winner. Local economics include the computer or GPU purchase, electricity, cooling, storage, maintenance time, and the opportunity cost of keeping hardware available. Cloud economics include provider charges, account limits, network use, and any minimum or recurring commitment.
Price the workload rather than the model name: requests per day, average input and output length, peak concurrency, uptime, and the value of offline capability. A local machine may be economical for steady use when hardware already exists, while cloud access can be practical for occasional large-model jobs. Verify current provider pricing and your electricity rate before making a purchase decision.
What is the practical decision process?
- Classify the data. Mark which prompts, files, and outputs may leave the machine and which must remain under local control.
- Define the workload. Record model capability, context length, output size, users, concurrency, and acceptable first-token and completion times.
- Check the stack. Match Linux release, GPU, driver, backend, container tools, and runtime documentation.
- Prove the route. Confirm the endpoint and cloud settings for every client, integration, and automation.
- Run representative tests. Measure cold and warm latency, throughput, queueing, errors, and output quality with non-sensitive data.
- Calculate total cost. Include hardware, electricity, maintenance, subscriptions, and the cost of downtime or manual correction.
- Document the choice. Record model version, quantization, runtime, driver, endpoint, privacy terms, and review date so the decision can be revisited when any component changes.
The most defensible answer is often conditional: local is preferable when verified data locality and offline control outweigh hardware and maintenance demands; cloud is preferable when capacity, convenience, or access to larger models outweighs sending requests to a provider; hybrid routing is appropriate when those requirements differ by task.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run local AI on Linux without an NVIDIA GPU?
Yes. CPU-only or other supported accelerator paths can run suitable models, especially smaller or quantized ones, although speed and model choice depend on the runtime and available memory. A hosted workflow is another way to use larger models without buying a local GPU.
Does an Ollama-based app always keep prompts on my computer?
No. The ecosystem documents both a local endpoint and a cloud endpoint, so the application’s configured URL and model route matter. Check the endpoint, account settings, and any remote features instead of relying on the application name.
Are cloud prompts always stored or used to train models?
Policies differ by provider, product, account tier, and date. Ollama’s March 2026 policy says its cloud-hosted prompts and responses are processed transiently, not retained beyond fulfillment, and not used to train AI models under that policy; do not generalize that statement to another service.
What should I record when testing a local model for production?
Keep the model and quantization identifiers, runtime and driver versions, context setting, endpoint, hardware, concurrency, and cold-versus-warm timings. Also record representative quality results and failure cases so a later update can be compared with the same conditions.
