Linux Mint 27, codenamed “Adrien,” is scheduled for release at Christmas 2026, according to the project’s September 2026 monthly update published October 13. Linux Mint has not announced a specific day, so Christmas is a target rather than a guaranteed release date.
What Linux Mint has officially announced
Linux Mint project author Clem wrote: “Our next release is scheduled for Christmas, and it will be called Linux Mint 27 ‘Adrien’.” The announcement establishes the release window and codename, but it does not give a calendar date, beta date, or final-day promise. The project also warned that development would enter a busy beta phase.
Linux Mint 27 is planned to use Ubuntu 26.04 as its base. The project says it will be available in at least three editions:
- Cinnamon
- Xfce
- MATE
The announcement does not state edition-specific hardware requirements, performance differences, accessibility details, or which edition is best for a particular computer. Those choices should therefore wait for the final release information rather than being inferred from the announcement.

Why the version number changed from “Mint 23 Alfa”
An earlier March 2026 development update referred to the work as “Mint 23 Alfa.” That was a temporary development label, not the final product name. At that point, the project said its release strategy was still unsettled. The later September announcement supersedes that label and confirms the Linux Mint 27 name.
The project says the number represents the upcoming year and that it will stop using point releases. Under the announced scheme, the major releases after 27 will be numbered 28, 29, and so on. This is a naming and release-structure decision; it does not by itself specify how long any particular release will receive support.

What features are being previewed
Linux Mint explicitly says the features shown in the September update are previews still being worked on. They should not be treated as a final Linux Mint 27 specification.

Clocks alarm application
One highlighted project is Clocks, an alarm application from the Clockenstein project. The planned behavior includes recurring alarms, custom alarm sounds, and notifications even when the application is not running. Clem said its interface and behavior take inspiration from Android. The announcement does not confirm that every described behavior will ship unchanged in the final release.

Wayland and development work
The team reported ongoing work on Wayland compatibility, bug fixing, development processes, and internal tools. “Compatibility work” is not a statement that Linux Mint 27 will use Wayland by default or that every desktop component will be fully compatible at launch. The update provides no final session policy, supported-hardware matrix, or completion date.
Other projects not yet defined
Three projects—Superlight, Unfold, and Velocitty—were scheduled for discussion in the following month. The September announcement does not define their functions or confirm their final status, so it would be premature to describe them as shipped applications or settled Linux Mint 27 features.

- Visual changes to Mint themes and dialogs.
- Cinnamon support for WPA3 and Opportunistic Wireless Encryption (OWE).
These were also plans rather than guarantees. Their appearance in an earlier update does not establish that they will be enabled, complete, or unchanged in the Christmas release.

What the March development snapshot does—and does not—tell us
The March update described a then-current development build based on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS with Linux kernel 7.0, Cinnamon 6.7-unstable, CJS 140, and a live installer ported from Linux Mint Debian Edition. Those details identify that development snapshot only. They are not an independently tested specification for the final Linux Mint 27 release, and any of those versions may change before publication.
What to expect before release
- Further development: bug fixes, Wayland work, internal tooling, and the previewed desktop and application changes continue.
- Beta testing: the project expects a busy beta phase, but has not announced when it will begin.
- Final release information: the project still needs to publish the exact release date, final component versions, installation images, and any last-minute changes.
Readers planning an upgrade should wait for the project’s release announcement and final notes before treating preview features or development-build versions as available. Christmas 2026 is the announced target, not a stated day of the month.
