Linux HID support means Linux can interpret a device’s Human Interface Device reports and expose input through the operating system; it does not guarantee that every game, mouse setting, or controller feature will work. A mouse cursor moving proves less than full access to its profiles, and a controller connecting proves less than successful mapping in a particular game. To assess compatibility, check the exact device and connection, then consider Linux’s driver and input layers, any required configuration software or permissions, and the game itself.
What does Linux HID support actually mean?
HID stands for Human Interface Device. It is a way for devices to describe the structure and meaning of the information they send and, in some cases, the information they can receive. The Linux kernel documentation describes the HID subsystem as parsing HID report descriptors and converting HID events into normal input-device interfaces. In practical terms, that can let Linux expose a mouse movement, button press, or controller axis as an input event that other software can use.
That is an important part of compatibility, but it is only one part. “HID supported” is not a universal certification that a device’s full feature set works in every distribution, application, or game. A device can be recognized and produce ordinary input while its extra controls or configuration tools remain unsupported. Conversely, an input problem can arise from an incorrect or unusual descriptor, a device-specific quirk, a missing driver path, access permissions, or the way a game handles input.
It helps to separate four claims that are often blurred together:

Success at one layer does not prove success at the next. If a mouse moves but its profile software cannot see it, that is a configuration-support issue rather than proof that basic HID input is broken. If a controller appears in Linux but a game ignores a button, the remaining issue may be the application’s mapping.
How does input travel from a device to a game?
A useful simplified path is device and connection → kernel driver and HID parsing → Linux input events or raw HID access → configuration software or game. Each stage has a different job, so diagnosing the wrong stage can lead to unnecessary driver changes or incorrect assumptions about compatibility.
A device first communicates over a transport such as USB or Bluetooth. The kernel’s HID and input components parse the reports and can make ordinary input available through Linux input interfaces. The report may also include output or feature information—for example, information related to device settings or LEDs—but that does not mean every application knows how to change or use it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSome userspace programs need access to hidraw, a Linux interface that gives software access to unparsed HID reports from USB or Bluetooth HID devices. It is not the same thing as an ordinary input event, and it does not itself make a game understand a controller. Device discovery and permission rules can matter for this path. Valve’s Linux-specific Steam Input access rules, for example, include hidraw and uinput access for particular devices. A driver being present and a userspace application having permission are separate questions.
Above the kernel, applications can use different input layers. SDL offers a lower-level joystick API as well as a higher-level gamepad API. Steam Input is another layer for configuring supported input devices. A given game may use one approach, another, or its own implementation; the existence of SDL or Steam Input does not establish that a particular game uses either. When controls work in one game but not another, that difference is a reason to check each game’s settings and input support rather than conclude that Linux has no support for the device.

How can I tell whether my controller works on Linux?
Check the exact controller, its connection method, and the specific game or configuration layer you intend to use. A controller family name alone is not enough: USB, Bluetooth, and a proprietary wireless adapter can follow different driver paths, and support for ordinary buttons does not automatically establish support for every extra feature.
- Identify the exact model or revision. Avoid relying only on a broad label such as “Xbox controller” or “Switch controller.” If the device has a revision or connection-specific variant, record it.
- Decide how you will connect it. Check USB and Bluetooth separately. If you plan to use a proprietary wireless dongle, treat that as its own connection path rather than assuming it behaves like Bluetooth.
- Check the Linux driver path for that combination. Consider the kernel and distribution actually installed. Current main-branch driver source documents what is present in that source tree; it does not prove that every change is included in an older kernel shipped by a particular distribution.
- Check the capabilities you need. Separate ordinary buttons and axes from rumble, sensors, touch surfaces, or other extras. Confirm the relevant feature at the driver and application level before treating it as a requirement met.
- Check access and mapping. If a tool such as Steam Input needs a userspace device interface, verify its access rules. Then confirm that the target game recognizes and maps the controller the way you need.
- Test the symptom at the right layer. If the operating system receives the expected input but one game does not, focus on that game’s controls or input configuration rather than immediately replacing the controller.
These checks answer different questions: whether the device connects, whether Linux receives the reports, whether configuration software can access them, and whether a game maps them. If you need a particular advanced feature, verify that feature explicitly rather than treating a general “works on Linux” statement as sufficient.

What do the documented controller examples tell you?
Specific driver and access-rule examples show why it is better to check a model and connection path than to generalize from a brand. They establish documented support paths, not a promise that every game or every advanced feature behaves identically.
Sony DualSense
Linux’s hid-playstation driver source identifies the DualSense and contains code related to gamepad input, sensors, the touchpad, battery reporting, rumble, and the lightbar. Valve also maintains separate Steam Input hidraw access rules for DualSense over USB and Bluetooth. That is evidence of distinct kernel and userspace paths for this controller. It does not establish identical support for each feature in every game, distribution, or driver version. In particular, do not assume adaptive-trigger behavior or haptic parity in a specific game without evidence for that game and version.
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and Joy-Cons
The Linux hid-nintendo driver identifies Switch Pro Controllers and Joy-Cons, while Valve’s access rules distinguish Switch Pro Controller connections over USB and Bluetooth. These references help you identify the relevant software paths, but a driver’s current main-branch source does not mean every visible change is included in the kernel installed on a particular system. Check that system’s actual kernel and the exact controller connection before drawing a conclusion.

Xbox controllers
The Linux input-driver tree includes xpad, an Xbox gamepad driver. That is not evidence that every Xbox connection is handled as a generic HID device. The separate projects xpadneo and xone document different paths: xpadneo supports Bluetooth, while xone documents USB and the Xbox Wireless dongle and directs Bluetooth users to xpadneo. Xone describes itself as being in maintenance mode. If you are choosing an adapter, check that exact adapter path and the appropriate driver before buying; an Xbox controller’s family name alone does not settle the question.
For any controller, write down the complete combination you care about: model and revision, USB versus Bluetooth versus proprietary adapter, installed kernel and distribution, required controls or extras, permission requirements, and the target game or Steam Input setup. That is a more useful compatibility question than asking whether “controllers” or even an entire brand are supported.
Why does my gaming mouse move, but its settings do not?
Ordinary pointer movement and buttons can work through generic Linux HID and input support even when a gaming-mouse configuration tool does not support the exact model. Advanced settings rely on additional software that must know how to communicate with that particular device and expose the features it offers.
libratbag describes ratbagd as a configuration daemon mainly for gaming mice. Piper is its graphical frontend. Piper’s maintainers explain that “Piper is merely a graphical frontend to the ratbagd DBus daemon”; Piper therefore depends on the daemon’s device support rather than providing an independent driver for every mouse. The supported-device list and available features depend on libratbag and may differ from what a manufacturer advertises.
Exact model identification matters. The project’s device files include a Logitech G502 Hero entry with USB match 046d:c08b and a separate G502 X PLUS entry with different device matches and quirks. Those entries show that the project has specific definitions for those models; they do not establish that every similarly named mouse, revision, connection mode, or advertised feature is supported. Nor does a device file by itself establish that the settings you want are exposed in the version installed on your system.

Solaar is another Logitech device manager, but its project explicitly says it is not a device driver. It may be a relevant settings route only when your exact Logitech device and desired function are covered. Do not treat it as a general repair for missing input events or a substitute for checking the mouse’s device-specific configuration support.
When assessing a mouse, distinguish basic pointer movement and button input from profile changes or other configuration. Then check the exact model, its device ID if available, connection method, relevant configuration project’s device entry, the particular feature you want, and the version of the installed software. A broad product family name or a marketing list of features cannot answer all of those questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check when a button or axis behaves incorrectly?
Start at the operating-system input layer and work upward. First identify the device and how it is connected, then determine whether Linux exposes the expected input before troubleshooting a specific game or configuration frontend.
- Describe the failure precisely. Is the device absent, is all input missing, or is just one button, axis, profile, or extra feature affected? Note whether the issue occurs in more than one application.
- Confirm the device and transport. A USB result does not establish Bluetooth or adapter support. Identify the exact model or revision and avoid assuming a family-wide behavior.
- Check whether the expected input event exists. The Linux kernel HID documentation explains that a faulty or mismatched descriptor, or a device quirk, can produce missing or incorrect event interfaces. Its guidance illustrates inspecting input with
libinput record. Use the relevant documentation for the system and tool version rather than changing permissions blindly. - Separate input from configuration. If ordinary events appear but a mouse utility cannot set a profile, check the relevant device definition and software support. If a userspace tool cannot discover a device, check its device access requirements as well as whether its daemon or service is available.
- Separate Linux input from game mapping. If the operating system receives the expected event but a particular game does not respond, inspect that game’s input options and any controller configuration layer it supports.
- Check versions and connection-specific driver guidance. Compare the installed kernel and userspace software with the support path for the exact device. Do not assume that a current source tree’s behavior has shipped in your distribution.
Do not make broad permission changes or install an out-of-tree driver as a first reaction. Permissions affect userspace access and should be handled through the relevant distribution or application guidance; an unrelated permission change cannot correct a bad descriptor or missing driver path. Likewise, an out-of-tree driver is not a universal fix and can introduce its own version and maintenance requirements.

The kernel documents HID-BPF as an option for targeted work such as joystick dead-zone adjustments or descriptor corrections. That demonstrates that specialized fixes are possible for some cases, not that a ready-made fix exists for every device or that most users should begin there. If a problem appears descriptor- or quirk-related, the appropriate next step depends on the exact hardware and system.

What is the most useful way to verify a compatibility claim?
Ask what “supported” means and whether the claim applies to your exact device, connection, software versions, and required features. A useful claim names its scope: for example, ordinary input over USB, or a particular configuration feature for a specified mouse model.
Prefer evidence from the relevant layer. Kernel driver documentation or source can establish that a driver has a device path; a configuration project’s device list can establish that it has a model-specific definition; access rules can establish a userspace permission path; and game documentation or settings can establish application-level mapping. None of those sources alone proves the whole chain. A hardware review or a product’s marketing material may discuss features but should not be substituted for device- and version-specific Linux support evidence.
Also distinguish a documented feature from a guarantee about your setup. Distribution kernel versions differ, project support evolves, device revisions can differ, and an application may choose its own input API. In the absence of a claim covering your particular combination, the responsible answer is narrower: the documented sources show a possible support path, while the exact game or feature remains to be confirmed.

What should I remember before troubleshooting or buying?
Linux HID support is the foundation for parsing device reports and providing input interfaces, not a promise of end-to-end compatibility. For a controller, verify the model and connection separately, then check the driver, access rules, desired features, and game mapping. For a gaming mouse, basic pointer behavior and model-specific settings support are separate questions. In both cases, identify which layer is failing before changing software or hardware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does HID mean a device is plug and play on every Linux distribution?
No. HID describes the device/report interface, but the installed kernel, device quirks, userspace permissions, and application support still affect what works. A current driver source tree may also include changes that are not present in an older distribution kernel.
Can Steam Input fix a controller that Linux does not detect?
Steam Input is an application-level configuration layer, not a replacement for the kernel’s device and input handling. It can help configure supported devices when the necessary device access is available, but it cannot be assumed to repair every missing driver path or descriptor problem.
Does hidraw give a game controller working game controls?
No. Hidraw lets suitable userspace software access unparsed HID reports; it does not automatically create ordinary input events or map controls inside a game. Access permissions and the software using the reports still matter.
