Don’t Nod, the French studio known for Life is Strange, entered court-ordered safeguard proceedings in October 2026 after worsening losses and shrinking cash reserves. The procedure is designed to protect a company before an irreversible failure, so it is not proof that Don’t Nod has already gone bankrupt. However, the studio says its ability to continue beyond 31 January 2027 is materially uncertain without new financing. Its latest disclosure also puts the potential French job impact at up to 85 positions, while earlier company and union communications cited up to 90.
What happened to Don’t Nod?
The Paris Business Court opened safeguard proceedings for DON’T NOD Entertainment SA on 19 October 2026; the company announced the decision on 20 October. The filing followed first-half results showing lower revenue, an operating loss and insufficient cash to cover all operating and project-financing needs.
Under the order, SELARL DÉTROIT, represented by Maître Charles-Henri Carboni, was appointed for the case, and an initial six-month observation period began. DON’T NOD describes safeguard as a preventive and protective measure intended to keep the business operating while it seeks a sustainable financing solution. Liabilities incurred before the opening judgment are frozen during the proceedings.
Chairman and chief executive Oskar Guilbert called the application “a proactive, protective measure.” That wording matters: the court process acknowledges serious financial difficulty but does not establish that liquidation has occurred.

Is Don’t Nod going bankrupt?
Not at this stage. Safeguard is a French restructuring procedure for a company that faces difficulty meeting its obligations but is seeking court protection and a way to continue. The immediate alternative is not automatically a shutdown; the company can operate while a financing or restructuring plan is examined.
Don’t Nod has nevertheless warned that there is “material uncertainty” about its ability to continue as a going concern beyond 31 January 2027. If outside financing and a viable plan are not secured, the case could move toward a more severe outcome, including liquidation. The available disclosures do not say that liquidation has been ordered.

How many Don’t Nod employees are being laid off?
The latest company disclosure, dated 20 October 2026, says the transformation plan could affect up to 85 positions in France. That is a potential impact, not confirmation that every dismissal has been completed.
| Date and source | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| 1 September 2026, company transformation announcement | Up to 90 positions | Initial planning estimate during the information-consultation process |
| 20 October 2026, company safeguard disclosure | Up to 85 positions in France | Latest company figure |
| 9 April 2026, STJV account | About 90 jobs, leaving 49 workers | The union’s description of the planned workforce reduction |
The company said the French operations would be refocused around one production line. The October disclosure specifically said the plan did not affect the Montréal studio.
What is the STJV saying about the layoffs?
STJV, the French video-game workers union, says the cuts would remove most non-managerial roles and target worker representatives. Its April account describes the layoffs as a development feared by employees after earlier restructuring.

STJV also argues that reducing the workforce to 49 could place the company below the French 50-worker threshold associated with important representative rights. That is the union’s interpretation of the consequences; the disclosures do not provide an independent legal ruling confirming it. The 49-worker figure is therefore best understood as a union projection, not a certified final headcount.
What does a safeguard procedure mean for the studio’s work?
The court protection is intended to let Don’t Nod continue operating while it negotiates financing and examines a longer-term plan. It does not by itself announce that a particular game has been cancelled or that every development team has closed.
In practical terms, management must pursue funding while the court-appointed professionals monitor the case during the observation period. Projects, staffing and production priorities can still change as the financing position becomes clearer. No public disclosure establishes a blanket halt to the company’s games.

| Path | What would need to happen | Current status |
|---|---|---|
| Safeguard followed by continued operations | New external financing and a sustainable operating or project-financing plan | The company’s stated objective |
| Failure of the restructuring | No financing or no viable plan during or after the court process | A possible later outcome, not an event already ordered |
Auditors had warned that funding could run out later in 2026, and independent reporting said the company might not survive beyond the start of 2027 without new money. The six-month observation period gives the studio time to seek that solution, but it does not guarantee one.
What happens next?
The key developments will be the results of the employee consultation, the final scope of the French workforce reduction, updates from the safeguard case and evidence of new financing. The difference between the 85-position company figure and the earlier 90-position estimates should narrow as the consultation and court-supervised process advance.
For players, the immediate conclusion is limited: Don’t Nod remains in operation under protection, while its financial future and the staffing behind future projects depend on whether funding is secured before the company reaches the January 2027 warning date.

Can Don’t Nod still release or develop games during safeguard?
The procedure is intended to keep operations running, and no disclosure announces a blanket cancellation of the studio’s projects. Release schedules and development capacity can still change if financing or staffing plans change.
Why did restructuring start before the court filing?
Don’t Nod began an information-consultation process with employee representatives on 1 September 2026, weeks before the safeguard announcement. The sequence shows that operational restructuring was already under way when the company sought formal court protection.
What should employees and players watch for next?
The most informative updates will be the outcome of employee consultations, any revised headcount, court reports and a confirmed financing plan. Those events will indicate whether the safeguard process is moving toward continuity or a more severe restructuring.
