LibreOffice Writer is a capable, free desktop word processor; Microsoft Word is the stronger fit if you need the Microsoft desktop app or rely on Microsoft 365 services. Writer can open and save Word files, but format support is not a guarantee that every complex document will look or behave exactly the same. The practical choice depends on your document workflow, collaboration needs, privacy settings, and whether Word’s paid features justify the cost.

How do their features and workflows compare?
LibreOffice Writer
Writer handles everyday documents as well as longer, structured work. Its documented tools include spellchecking, a thesaurus, autocorrect, hyphenation, templates, styles, navigation, indexes, tables, multi-column layouts, frames, graphics, and calculations inside tables. It can also export documents to PDF. The LibreOffice Writer feature page describes creating text documents that can include graphics, tables, and charts.
Writer is one component of the LibreOffice desktop suite. The Writer Guide 26.2, published in March 2026, documents its support for Word .doc and .docx files and PDF export. These features make Writer a substantial option for writing and layout, but they do not establish one-to-one parity with every current Word capability.
Microsoft Word
Word is available in a free web version, while paid Microsoft 365 plans include the desktop Word app and other services. Whether the paid version is worth it depends on whether you need the desktop app, cloud storage, collaboration features, or other bundled benefits—not just whether you need to type documents.

Is LibreOffice compatible with Microsoft Word?
Yes, LibreOffice can open and save Microsoft Office formats, including .doc and .docx. Its help documentation also explains how to set a Microsoft format as the default save type. See LibreOffice’s guidance on Microsoft Office formats.
That means the formats are supported, not that every file will retain identical layout or behavior. The official format-support guidance does not promise perfect fidelity for every document. Differences matter most when a file relies on intricate layouts, embedded objects, or an organization-specific template.

How to reduce document-exchange problems
- Test representative documents before moving an important workflow to Writer, especially files with complex formatting or embedded objects.
- Keep an editable working copy in OpenDocument Text (ODT) when that fits your workflow.
- When sharing, save a separate copy in the recipient’s required format, then check that copy before sending.
What should you consider about privacy?
Privacy depends on the features you use, account and storage choices, and settings; a simple “local versus cloud” comparison is not enough to establish that one application is categorically more private. The sources cited here are product documentation, not independent privacy audits, and they do not establish that all Writer use is entirely offline.
Microsoft’s documented data categories
Microsoft’s Office data collection summary, published in October 2025, divides data into required and optional categories. It describes required data as necessary to keep products updated, secure, and operating as expected. Cloud storage and collaboration also involve information needed to secure and synchronize documents.

Microsoft’s diagnostic-data documentation says required diagnostic data supports security, updates, and expected performance; optional diagnostic data requires consent. In the context described, diagnostic data does not contain file contents, names, or email addresses, although it may include personal data under the GDPR definition. This description is specific to diagnostic data and should not be read as a statement about every kind of data processed by every feature.
Connected experiences
Some Microsoft connected experiences use cloud services. For example, Microsoft explains that when a user requests translation, the text is sent to its automated translator service and a translation is returned. The connected experiences overview describes this type of service.

When comparing privacy, consider the specific features you plan to use, whether you will store or collaborate on documents in the cloud, the account type, and the settings available to you. A choice to work locally may reduce reliance on cloud features, but it does not by itself answer every privacy question about the software.

Which one should you choose?
Choose LibreOffice Writer if
- You want a no-cost, open-source desktop suite.
- Your documents use ODT or common formats, and you do not depend on untested Word-specific workflows.
- You want Writer’s documented writing, formatting, long-document, and PDF-export tools.
Choose Microsoft Word if
- You need the Microsoft desktop Word app rather than only a free web version.
- Your work depends on Microsoft-centered collaboration or cloud features.
- The other apps and services bundled with Microsoft 365 make the plan worthwhile for your needs.
If you work with both
Test the actual documents and collaboration workflow you rely on before switching. Format compatibility is useful, but a representative-file check is the safer way to decide whether Writer can replace Word in your situation.
